'Different World' actor Lou Myers diesLou Myers, a stage, film and TV actor who memorably portrayed Mr. Gaines on the comedy "A Different World," has died, CNN confirms. Myers had been battling pneumonia for months at the time of his death, according to a statement from Global Business Incubation, a nonprofit of which he was chairman. He passed away in Charleston, West Virginia, on February 19 at the age of 75.
Although Myers is known for playing the lovably grumpy restaurant owner on Bill Cosby's "A Different World" – a spinoff of "The Cosby Show" that followed a group of college students – the actor held a variety of credits to his name. He appeared in TV shows such as "NYPD Blue," "JAG" and "ER" in addition to movies like 2001's "The Wedding Planner" and 1998's "How Stella Got Her Groove Back." A West Virginia native and an alum of West Virginia State University, Myers also brought his talent to the stage. His first appearance on Broadway was with the Negro Ensemble Company’s production of "The First Breeze of Summer," and he went on to perform in "The Piano Lesson," "Oprah Winfrey's Color Purple" and "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof." One of Myers' earliest credited appearances on television was on "The Cosby Show," and according to the statement, "Lou always remembered that he owes his introduction to Hollywood to Bill Cosby." The actor is survived by his mother, who is 95, and his son.

Gary Coleman was terrific in Office Space (Lumburgh), but I think I liked him better as Mike Brady in The Brady Bunch Movie.

Battling pneumonia for months? Why wasn't he on antibiotics?
Perhaps it was viral or a fungal pneumonia neither respond to antibiotics. Not all pneumonia is bacterial and perhaps he had a strain that was resistant to most antibiotics (growing problem) or he may have had other medical problems that was causing his overall health to be worsened with the pneumonia. Or he simply could have died of something else but this was the "official" reason given.
that's right it was job illimination...
Antiobiotic resistant strains are becoming pretty common (like MRSA and DRSP). Aside from that, the viral form of pneumonia (for which antibiotics will do nothing) account for about a third of adult cases.

He was on antibiotics but just couldn't fight it. He has been sick since before Christmas. He has been in hospital for way over a month.

I also enjoyed watching Lou on A Different World and The Color Purple. He was a great actor and comedian. So sad to hear he passed. RIP LOU

In your acting career, you have turned in many great performances. However, the one performance that will forever have me doubled over in laughter, is the one you did in the movie Cobb with Tommy Lee Jones.

That Cosby Show episode was so funny that I still remember it to this day. The guy just had natural presence.

You sir, are an idiot. This article is about a accomplished actor that has a body of work that many appreciate. Just because his career meant nothing to you does not mean he should not be written about. I personally know very little about the symphony or artistic community in Russia, but when I read about the horrific attack on the new ballet director I showed respect for their community.
