What we sea: Five great oceanic filmsWith all of the interest surrounding the Carnival Triumph cruise ship drama, we figured we would dip our toe in the water (yep, we went there) and share some of our favorite oceanic films. From romance to drama (and sometimes both) we've got you covered: "Titanic" You knew it was coming. The love story between Jack and Rose on the doomed ship reigns supreme as king of the cinema. Fortunately, the Triumph has a much happier ending in sight. "The Blue Lagoon" The 1980 film stars Christopher Atkins and Brooke Shields as two kids cast adrift on a tropical island. This one's got lots of love, but not much clothing. Ahh, to be young and in love. "Cast Away" Tom Hanks earned an Oscar nomination in 2000 for his portrayal of a man left on a deserted island after his plane crashes at sea. We thought Wilson the volleyball turned in a pretty good performance also. "Life of Pi" Director Ang Lee transformed this best-selling novel into a film. Young "Pi" Patel must battle for his life upon the seas with his companion, a Bengal tiger named Richard Parker. The movie is nominated for an Academy Award this year. "Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl" This 2003 film set off the franchise and introduced the world to the wit that is Johnny Depp's Captain Jack Sparrow. It's pretty rollicking. The Big Blue.
The Big Blue is a 1988 English-language Cinéma du look film made by French director Luc Besson. The film stars Jean-Marc Barr, Rosanna Arquette, Jean Reno and depicts the sporting rivalry between two famed free divers.
Release date: August 22, 1988 (USA)
So pleased that someone else remembers this incredible film.

woot woot or moot moot–which one
The writers they hire think the world started in 1990!! -How about JAWs, the deep, the last voyage, A night to remember, and the enemy below for consideration?
They didn't make movies back before 1990 except in black and white.
master and command all you want...just be nicey
How about "Master and Commander?"
The Abyss...come on.
OMG!! I swear to god I thought I was the only person who loved that movie! Well.. looks like that makes 2 of us! You may also have seen/like The Deep?? I loved that one as well!
Who was the lazy writer on this one? Wow. You really new to see more movies. Stop hurting people's choices with your completely inadequate list.
Horrible list >>> Posieden Adventure, Caine Mutiny, Mutiny on the Bounty... So many other movies better than these.
I agree! how about the classic 20,000 leauges under the sea! loved that squid!!!
has too prove a bit more but it does in many cases and worth the effort in some cases.
Could care less–stop believing blogs they may not be real...could be an attention grabbing moment.....
Definitely The Poseiden Adventure. Great movies. The original not the remake.
top of the charts is what makes movies famous.
I will never forget the movie.
Cabin Boy. It was funny. Dave Letterman made a cameo appearance. "Wanna buy a monkey".
Jaws may not be 'oceanic', but it's gotta be on the top of the list. "Dead Calm" may be too far fetched, or boring, or a perfect sense of isolation on the water that can quicken our pulse.
God is leo cute.
I sure am. I'm awesome. Thanks for noticing.
How about The Abyss?
Y'all forgot about Captain Ron which is a classic!
We'll just pull in somewhere an ask for directions!!!

Future number one most popular oceanic movie: The Floater
right guys?
The Abyss, The Poisidon Adventure, Deep Rising, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Leviathan, Deep Star Six, Orca, Friday the 13th VIII Jason Takes Manhattan (80 percent of that movie takes place on a ship out at sea people!)
If Finding Nemo isn't the best (oceanic) film I don't know what is.
How does jaws not make this list.
"The Abyss" or "The Lord of the Flies" were not mentioned. Be reasonable, CNN.
Cnn blows
What a coincidence...so does u.s. slave!
None of these would make my Top 5.
Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Sea
Perfect Storm
are better IMHO
I think I hear a who.
I was hoping for Crocodile Dundee, Mad Max, Young Einstein... That's ask I can think of.
What about, "Lord of the Flies" or "Castaway"?
Cast Away was mentioned. One I've yet to see mentioned: Das Boot
I realized that after I posted. I should have said, "Gilligan's Island". Lol!
Master & Commander, how did that not make it on the list?
I understand it is not a film, but L O S T would be on my list for top "Oceanic" themed productions. "The Beach" was good too...
RRRRRRRRRR. Ye must ask a seafaring man what the best movie be. I say all of them as long as we are at home with our lived ones watching them with smiles on our faces and a bag of popcorn input hands. RRRRRRRR. Happy evenin to ye all and many blessed dreams be your's tonight our friends. RRRRRR
lived ones = loved ones
rrrrrrrrrr. That parrot be pecking at me fingers as I type. rrrrrrrrr
RRRRRRRRRR my favorite be the remake if The Bounty with Mel Gibson. That be a true seafaring movie, matey. Shiver me timbers.
RRRRRRRRRRR mateys. I be Pirate Pete here to tell ye of my seafaring adventures. I sailed round The Horn and into perdition's bay seeking pirate treasure. Gold and silver doubloons. Diamonds, rubys, and emeralds. And I found so much treasure it nearly sunk me ship. I had to bury part of it in treasure chest in deserted islands thar was so much. But that be ok. Now come the high tide we are setting sail for adventure. Join us if ye wish for a trip to Tahiti and Bora Bora. We'll be casting off in the morn. Rememver to bring ye parrots fer every pirate needs a jolly parrot friend. RRRRRRRRRR
rrrrr
shut up brooke shields
that's more like it..
Yeah, you missed it alright. Try "A Night to Remember" ! Superb compared to Cameron's banal emotional byplay. If Cameron's made up film got an oscar then 58's meticulously done film SHOULD HAVE GOT A SPECIAL OSCAR! BOO on the Oscars.
no wait a moment she is so beautful especially with that disgusting whatever that was.....she's much prettier then lernardo decaprio - hands down.
Jaws!
The Perfect Storm and the last hour of JAWS
she deserved it–business as usual.
The Poseidon Adventure you dumb@$$
Just to be clear. Although the ship does share a name with me and has been flooded with sewage, I had nothing to do with what happened on it. I did however look into joining the cruise after hearing about it though. Unfortunately I was told they would not let me board even if I rented a helicopter.
Triumph- you sure do take that stuff seriously! Helicopter? lol..
Yes it like it could be a very enjoyable time for poop lovers. The helicopter would have been costly. But I figured I could make some of the money back by providing entertainment for the passengers. And maybe if I brought food it could be a tax write off.
Seemed like
Triumph, you might still be in luck. I heard the ship is now back in port. Those poor people now are facing a 7 hour bus ride to get back to their cars. There's still hope for you. I would imagine that fragrant bouquet will follow them onto those buses.
Bombard them with butt nuggets. Now excuse me while I take a large steaming poop in my neighbor's koi pond.
Nah I'll pass on the bus ride. There won't be poop floating around like on the ship. Besides I heard they were actually able to take showers on the ship. Maybe if I see their bus going by I will fling my poop in any open window. Alvarez, keep stocking that koi pond with your brown trout. I'm sure your neighbors will love seeing them floating with their fish.
