According to Entertainment Weekly, Sony announced Wednesday that Willow was no longer in consideration for the lead role because she's outgrown it. She was just nine when the development process began, but the singer/actress is now approaching her 13th birthday this fall.
Yet while Sony needs to think of a new lead actress, the studio does have an idea of who they want to helm the movie. Will Gluck ("Easy A," "Friends with Benefits" is reportedly in negotiations to lead the remake, which would take place in the modern day and have a soundtrack steered by Jay-Z.
"At the helm of 'Annie,' [Gluck] will bring to this film all the charm of the original Broadway production while also appealing to a new generation,” studio executives said in a press release.
Willow's parents Will and Jada Pinkett Smith are producing the film through their Overbrook Entertainment company.
