If you've seen Jennifer Lawrence talk anywhere, ever, you know that the 22-year-old actress enjoys a good joke.
But it seems a quip she thought she delivered perfectly at the Golden Globe Awards ended up being misinterpreted as a diss against Meryl Streep.
In one of the best lines of Sunday night, Lawrence ascended the stage to claim her Golden Globe for best actress in a comedy or musical, and as she took her trophy said in a sing-song voice, "Oooh, what does it say? I beat Meryl!"
Some - including Lindsay Lohan, who was basically live-tweeting the awards show - mistook that as a burn. These people clearly aren't big fans of the 1996 comedy, "The First Wives Club."
"It was a quote from 'First Wives' Club' - Bette Midler was talking about a Globe, I can't believe nobody's ever done it before," Lawrence vented to David Letterman on "The Late Show" Tuesday. "It was so perfect and I said it, and I had no idea Lindsay Lohan would take it to the Twitterverse ... Is that what they call it? I'm not on Twitter."
As Lawrence pointed out, she wasn't trying to offend Streep - not that you could, according to Lawrence - nor does she hate the acclaimed actress.
If only she could've made "a public statement, like, 'Hey idiots, it's a quote from a movie.'"
Oh - looks like she just did.
Boom shocka locka boom!
Loved the show – something different and funny – congratulations to everyone that worked really hard. Let's be positive and appreciative of people's efforts!
this is 2013...keep moving...
with a knick knack patty whack, give a dog a bone...
Quit whacking your patty!
Castration to anyone who even heard of this before clicking on this thread should be manadated.
It's OK Jennifer, LiLo has absolutely no standing among the talented.
that guy is sooooooo funny and he should send his material in........
Geez. Meryl Streep fa*ts? How totally unlady like. But then, she is rather cheesy, IMAO. LOL.
Have to say when she said it, I thought it was a little disrespectful to Streep. Actually glad she clarified it so that I can continue to respect her.
I hope you are kidding...
I am proud to say, finally someone from Louisville made it big that has class. I get so sick & tired of people finding the biggest hillbillies that they can find in our state and giving them their 15 minutes of fame. Now maybe people will view us a bit differently. We do wear shoes and most of us still have all of our teeth. I'm sure you trolls out here will have some smart remark that you think is hilarious about this so please spare us.
Really!!!!!! thanks for clarifying
We'll believe you're not hillbillies when you start saying Loo-E-ville instead of Lulville.
i hope niikki wins a grammy someday..she's the best judge on american idol
Are we watching the same American Idol?
take away her electronic music filters and her makeup (if it qualifies as makeup!)and bad wigs and you're left with a dumb ugly untalented ho! even Idol is pushing thru the weirdos and not basing it on talent! so sad
Like anyone cares about what Lindsay Lohan has to say. Jennifer thanks for bringing such a breath of fresh air to Hollywood. I also agree that Meryl is talented but enough already.
I thought it was funny and was VERY GLAD she BEAT Meryl. I'm so sick of Meryl. She f*rts in the Hollywood hills and they nominate her for it. Enough already. There are other actresses.
but such talented f*rts! better then yours! Lohan cant even f*rt anymore. She's gone plastic. All her ports are shut!
you would be singing a different tune....male or female streepers hahaha
Jenn Lawrence is the anti-Scarlet Johannson, not classically trained and beautiful but naturally talented, telegenic, and desirable. If she avoids pitfalls of dope and crappy men, she'll be in movies a long time, longer than most starlets, who usually have a hard future as casting calls go down proportional to their looks. This Lawrence character seems to have more on offer and more in herself than that.
Why these awards shows are televised I don't know. Who cares ? They should be held privately for the stars to fawn over each other and leave us out of it. Watching a modern movie is near to impossible – we know so much about the lives of the actors. I think of Scientology and Oprah's couch when I see Tom Cruise, I think gay when I see Rupert Murdoch or Neil Patrick Harris or Nathan Lane, I think theft, drugs and car accidents when I see Lohan, I think infidelity, pack of kids, home wrecker when I see Brad Pitt and Jolie. I prefer old movies where I know nothing about the actors – can sit back and enjoy the story.
Per Jennifer Holland's post - and now I think "crabby" and "literal-minded" when I see the name, 'Jennifer Holland."
JH – if YOU don't want to see awards shows, then just don't tune in. Obviously a lot of us DO want to see them ... and get value from them that you seem to be oblivious to. And if you only think Oprah's couch when you see Tom Cruise, etc., etc., with the other stars ... i suggest you'd enjoy life more if you could detach a bit from everyday reality, and develop a bit more imagination.
Uh...Rupert Murdoch is not gay. I think you mean Ruper Everett. By the way, you do not have to watch the award shows you are dissing. Most of us have hundreds of channels to choose from via cable. Choose something else.
Rupert Murdoch? Are you freaking kidding me? Lady, if you're going to complain about knowing too much about celebrities, at least get the names of the people you're complaining about correct! Rupert Murdoch = owner of giant amounts of media, involved in huge scandals surrounding 'News of the World'. You probably meant Rupert Everett, the actor (My Best Friend's Wedding, The Next Big Thing, Shrek, etc.)
Let me see if I understand: Lawrence quoted lines from a stale movie, then gets haughty because the likes of Lohan reacts to her bad re-scripting.
I taught that ungrateful little bltch everything she knows, even how to shoot an arrow, and this is the thanks I get?
Jennifer is a complete breath of fresh air in Hollywood. She is pretty, witty, and lets her talent speak for itself. Hollywood gets way too egotistical and sensitive sometimes over little things like jokes. I'm sure Meryl had a good laugh over the whole situation as she seems to be one of the least egotistical actresses out there as well. Some people need to really relax.
lindsey lohan, coming to a jail near you
I would like to have intercourse with her.
Keep it in your PANTS
about lindsey lohan and she'll get of this jam too.
i would like that.
Shouldn't Lohan be in jail by now? How is she tweeting anything?
Aren't 20 arrests and numerous parole violations enough for this no-talent crackwh0re?
still no viagra required....i was shocked myself after almost 3 years!
She's BEAUTIFUL! BUt I think she should get those moles on her chest lasered off,or something. They are not that nice and take away from an otherwise beautiful, perfect person!
Wow. How superficial are you? If she's anything like me, it would cost a small fortune to remove every mole from my body. Some people just have a lot of them.
You'd be lucky if you got close enough to her to smell her Egg McMuffin flatulence, and you're going to criticize her over moles?? I can't begin to imagine the myriad of physical imperfections that must plague you. The first and most obvious being a severely damaged cranium.
like her style..hahahaha
and all new communcations?
i control my life...jen does not...visibility will be slowly going away from you jen as you can see.
i do wish you luck.
can't locate 4 can you Jenn...thats because Jenn is the boss of her life...not the attention seekers.
Attention seeking does not work with people...this 2013 learn.
how may times do people have too tell her nobody has to listen too her....
and of course there is jealous spiteful Lohan blowing up the twitterverse to try and get a dig on JLaw-feeling upstaged and threatened Lindsay?? well she should Lawrence is wiping the floor with you as far a careers go-and as an"actress" why didn't Lohan know her movie facts and realize what a perfect quip it was?-I'm sure Meryl, Bette and Keaton were bursting-besides even without the back story it is a pretty good line especially for one of these painfully boring awards shows-Lohan is such a low class sleeze-her last movie was a mercy flick and is basically a porn which she got fired from and had to beg her way back on-between Lawrence, Stewart and Hough-the young actress league is looking pretty good-and just maybe we can gratefully start saying-Lindsay who?? and maybe we can stop being subjected to movies where Anustain is trying to play a 20 something-hell maybe even Liam Hemsworth will realize who he should be dating in true Hollywood fashion -his co-star-duh??
I really like her and I hope that she stays in Hollywood as long as Meryl. IMO she is one of the best of the young actors. Lindsay is just jealous because there probably aren't many more statues in her future.
I thought the "I beat Meryl" line was funny during the Golden Globes. I didn't know it was a line from a movie, but it was clearly (to me) a reaction that was cute, not offensive.
She is right.
Seriously, anyone who thought it was a diss is a complete idiot.
No, Mickey–they are not 'complete idiots'. To quote one line from a 17-year old-movie and expect an international audience to remember it makes Jennifer a 'complete idiot.' Next time, think of who is listening and how it can be easily misinterpreted. "First Wives' Club' was not that memorable a movie.
No, Anne, it doesn't make her a complete idiot. She now is only allowed to say something if she knows the entire world will get the reference and approve? How about no. Get your head out of your butt.
For crying out loud, Anne, a person doesn't have to know she was quoting a movie to see it wasn't intended as disrespect. I didn't know it was from First Wives Club and the thought didn't occur to me that she was dissing the great Meryl Streep. Who the heck *would* diss Streep at an awards show? And *why* would anyone diss Streep?
You're a fool and an idiot, Anne, if you thought Jennifer Lawrence was dissing Meryl Streep. A complete idiot.
to Ann and Alex. First Wives Club was a movie? hunh. There must have been many more movies that suited my taste that I saw instead of FWC. I thought JL's comment (now I know it was a quote) was a dig toward one of this country's greatest actresses.
instead of spamming all day we did that.
