Trailer Park: Tom Cruise's 'Oblivion,' Will Smith's 'After Earth'

We're starting the week with a look at two new sci-fi projects from actor pals Tom Cruise and Will Smith.

Both movies take us to a post-apocalyptic earth, with the trailer for Cruise's movie, "Oblivion," opening with a shot of where the last Super Bowl game was played.

Cruise's nostalgic character Jack Harper, fitted in a Yankees cap, goes on to tell us that while earth's inhabitants won a battle that happened 60 years prior, the war left much of the planet destroyed. As a result, "everyone's been evacuated, and nothing human remains."

Harper's part of a "mop-up crew" of drone repairmen with just two weeks to go before his mission was complete. But while he's out scavenging, Harper's taken by an underground group of rebels seemingly led by a cigar-smoking Morgan Freeman. It isn't long before he also discovers a group of apparent humans in pods, which includes one woman who mysteriously knows his name.

Directed by "TRON: Legacy" helmer Joseph Kosinski, "Oblivion" is expected to open on April 19.

Meanwhile, in another futuristic story, Will Smith and his son Jaden tackle an earth on which everything's evolved to kill humans.

The father-son pair portray Cypher and Katai Raige, who must figure out how to survive after crash-landing on a planet that humans abandoned a 1,000 years prior.

"Every single decision we make will be life and death," Will's Cypher tells Jaden's Katai. "But if we are going to survive this, you must realize that fear is not real. It is a product of thoughts you create."

As they try to avoid the numerous species out to kill them, Cypher tells Katai to not misunderstand: "Danger is very real. But fear is a choice."

"After Earth," directed by M. Night Shyamalan, is scheduled to bow in theaters June 7. Check out the international trailer below.

I read that Cruise is circling The Trail by M L Dunn. The book is about a sheriff and father on the trail of comanche who stole a young girl. Sounds something like The Searchers, but i read the book and it much differnet. Anyway there is a black cavalry soldier in that book – maybe Will Smith would like to grab that role. I've heard that Tom Crusise and Will Smith are good friendds. I would love to see them in a movie together.

Both Will and Tom awesome actors that make great movies respectively. To the carping critics – get a life. Imagine people blogging about your character. Amazing how people think they have balls behind a computer and in real life are absolute cowards.... I wish both Will and Tom much success in their upcoming films.

Anyone who feels the need to defend celebrity actors against film critics – simply because those writers have criticisms, as their job description invites them to, of said actors' performances – is weirdly misguided. The actor's job is to put his skills on display, and he commands considerable cash for it; the writers' job is to comment on the quality of goods provided. Your job, friend, is to FRIGGIN' CHILL OUT.

Yup. Nepotism at its worst. How about opening these projects to a casting panel instead of literally making a movie to showcase your son? No respect for that at all.

I would agree– if his son wasn't a relatively good actor.
