Grave of the fireflies is so sad, but it has true meaning – and determination. Besides the sadness of the story, the artwork and exitment is better then ever! I think this actually moght be my #1 movie of the year – actually – of my life!

  6. The Cat returns

I love the cat rerturns. Miyazaki is uncapable of making a good movie! This tale is a bit of fantasy as a girl beleives in herself, and who she truly is – Haru.

I can betcha $1000000000000000000 bucks that my fave. movie is Kiki's Delivery Service. It's about a young girl finding her place in the world. My place is in front of the screen playing Kiki's Delivery Service. Without it – no collection is complete!

This isn't a poll! This is one question where you can pick several answers...that's not a poll, a poll asks several questions and you give one answer for each question Where are the questions for television, different genre's of shows/movies. Whoever came up with this...my 9yr old son could have done better.

I know. Your 9 year old son could work with cascade style sheet and change those check boxes to radial buttons.

I selected one movie anyway. I suspect Avengers or Dark Knight are going to win this poll because they were the two most watched movie this year. There are people who can't find a theater playing Silverlining Playbook with 100 miles radius where they live.

Dark Knight Rises is the best, it's got philosophy of religion (who else got stabbed on the rib and gives his life for everyone else?...the greatest story is always retold). I suspect stupid, radio-and-tv influenced minds would pick Ted.

    December 11, 2012 at 2:36 pm | Report abuse | Reply
    • Michael Vick©™

Dark Knight Rises certainly was much better than Avengers in my opinion. The story was deeper, and had better characterization. Most of all, the plot had many surprising twists. For me Avengers was a mindless action film with an outcome you already knew before walking into the theater. With that said, I think Dark Knight had a better villain in Joker and Heath Ledger's performance was outstanding. I didn't see Dark Knight Rises better it in terms of acting.

Ted is a completely different kind of film. My vote went to Silverlining Playbook. It was one of the best romance comedy in recent years backed up by strong performance from Jennifer Lawrence, Robert DeNiro, and Brad Cooper. Unfortunately, it doesn't play in all theaters.

Dark Knight was good, but it was just another Batman movie. We know the story. Life of Pi is amazing. Perks of Being a Wallflower is still my favorite. Hunger Games was good, but didn't do justice to the book. What about Woman in Black? Salmon Fishing on the Yemen? 21 Jump Street? Bully? The Grey? All good movies.

Avengers was a good movie and I'm not surprise it was the biggest hit in the box office. Here is my problem with it. It did not go the extra mile for a movie that was done so well. You know the heroes are not going to die. You know the villains are going to be defeated. You know the earth will be saved. It never kept the audience guessing. To be honest with you I dozed off for 10 minutes of the movie. This was why I thought Dark Knight was a notch above Avengers because you're constantly suprised by the development.

Snow White and the Huntsman, seriously??? That was one of the worst movies I have ever seen. Horribly cheesy - Kristin Stewart was terrible. They just used her to sell the tween crowd and then cheaped out on the whole production.

Charlize Theron was the only reason that movie was even watchable. Her performance single-handedly anchored the entire movie. Kristen Stewart is terrible.

But in real life, Charlize Theron is arrogant conceited b!tch. Kristen Stewart is one of the nicest gal you'll ever meet. But then again we only care about their acting skills, right?

Why are so many people nominating for Hobbit? You can't vote for a movie you haven't watched yet. The trailer looked promising. But then so was Prometheus. I thought Prometheus was going to be awesome but it was rather a big disappointment. I highly doubt Hobbit will be better than the last two LOTR movies.

You should only vote if you saw all the films listed. Otherwise picking the blockbuster movie of the year is unfair for other small budget films. If I have to pick just one, it would be Silverlining Playbook. If you haven't seen it, it's the best romantic comedy in recent year. I know a lot of people are going to pick Avengers. But compare that with Dark Knight Rises, can you say that you don't know what's going to happen? At least Dark Knight kept me guessing til the very end.

Anyway, my picks are (with short reason):
    Silverlining Playbook (see above)
    Ted (outrageously funny)
Wreck-it Ralph (very original, good storyline)
    Frankenweenie (very under-rated children's film)
John Carter (very original, poor Disney marketing hurt box office)
    MIB3 (best MIB of all)
    Argo (great history movie)
Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter (very creative fantasy with some non-fiction material)

Films I think are highly over-rated with brief reasoning:
    Avenger (too predictable)
Hunger Game (copy of battle royale)
    Brave (too predictable)
Twilight Breaking Dawn Pt 2 (at least it was better than pt 1)
Bourne Legacy (rip-off of Ultimatum copying roof top chase and bike stunts)

John Carter is not 'original', it is based off of a book, and there was a movie made about it already called "The Princess of Mars"....

      December 11, 2012 at 11:22 am | Report abuse |
    • Michael Vick(c)™

Yes, I know John Carter movie was based on a book, so are many movies such as Twilight and Bourne. But did you know it was published in the early 1900? How is it not original back in the beginning of 20th century when there was not space program and we knew nothing about Mars? It was amazing the author imagined what the low gravity will do to a person. This was few decades before the first Superman comic was published. Maybe original isn't the right word. But it was a great interpretation of a creative writing for its time.

What about all those movies that will be released between Dec. 7, 2012 and Dec. 31, 2012 in hopes of gettting an Academy Award for Best Picture, which often goes to the movie released late in the year that's fresh in the memory of Academy voters? Movies such as The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and Zero Dark Thirty. Million Dollar Baby was released at the very end of the year and won Best Picture and many other awards.
This poll might not have the award winning Best Picture on it, which could be released after the poll is made.
I suppose it could be a write in the other column, but, only a few people are going to write in a name, when they can just check off a movie with a click of their mouse.

The Iron Lady is considered a 2011 movie, and Meryl Streep won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. It was released to a select group of theaters in December 2011, so it would be eligable for the Academy Awards, (and to be fresh in the memory of Academy voters). It was released to more theaters after a limited release in 2011.

If you have any appreciation off movies as an art form you must see Anna Kareninna
Think of the play Sunday in the park with George mixed with Moulin Rouge. The staging costumes scenery and acting were amazing.

I'm calling BS on this whole poll. Looper, Skyfall, and Cloud Atlas are not listed yet were very major films. My guess is that, if you looked at the production companies of these films there would be some kind of correlation in which ones are listed here and which aren't – meaning this blog is probably bought & paid for by someone with a vested interest in not listing certain films.

Lincoln and Skyfall are my favorites. I so look forward to 007’s action ever since Goldfinger, and this was the best ever. However, Lincoln is my pick because I too arose with my 39 year old son and the rest of the theater to clap in a spontaneous act of endorsement. I did not do so to cheer the film's effort though worthy, but for Lincoln's purposeful leadership. It has been almost 150 years, and Abe would be pleased his life effort and gift of life has in large part achieved the intended inclusiveness, fairness and opportunity for all. The movie showed a man lighting our moral education fire. His life's work and the fields of his fellow believers though dead stood tall. MLK, Robert Kennedy and many others lay in those fields too. Together their heart, words and sacrifice led to much of mankind's reconsideration and maturation. It is a story well told and well worth telling. It is surely worthy of receiving our best recognition if only an entertainment award.

I liked me some Avengers. One of the better action flicks I've seen in a while, and not just for mindless action, but well-written (and performed) humor In the perfect places. A clash of different "cultures" of superheroes who really don't like each other in the first place. Funny, well acted, great.

THE AVENGERS was the best movie of 2012 by far...a shining example of how persons of different races and backgrounds can put aside their differences and work together as a team to overcome the most impossible of tasks and fight for a shared belief in freedom, this despite being a comic book movie! Prometheus was advertised to answer questions. Instead it created more question marks in our heads. The movie did not make any sense. However, I've yet to see the alternate beginning and ending on my Blu-ray set. So hopefully the alternate beginning and ending make more sense.

I tend to agree that Black Knight was the best of the lot. But I don't feel that strongly about any of the movies of this year. Most were disappointing. Hunger Games was based on a sick premise. Avengers was all effects and a dumb plot. Lincoln could be noted as a good movie. But again nothing is over the top. Let's hope for better next year.

      December 11, 2012 at 8:30 am | Report abuse |
    • Michael Vick©™

I totally agree with Tom P. Avengers was so over-rated. I didn't even need to go see the movie to know that all the heroes survived, villains got defeated, and planet earth was saved. My problem with Hunger Games was not with its premise. It was a copy from Battle Royale. Dark Knight Rises was good. It was far from being predictable like Avengers. But I think Heath Ledger's Joker was a better villain and made the movie better than Rises.
