Carrie Underwood to star in NBC's 'The Sound of Music'

Raindrops on roses, whiskers on kittens and Carrie Underwood as Maria?

On Friday, NBC announced its plans to air a live broadcast of “The Sound of Music,” starring Underwood as Maria, based on the original musical.

The three-hour telecast is expected to air sometime during the 2013 holiday season.

“Speaking for everyone at NBC, we couldn't be happier to have the gifted Carrie Underwood take up the mantle of the great Maria von Trapp,” NBC Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt said in a press release. “She was an iconic woman who will now be played by an iconic artist.”

Grammy Award-winning Underwood follows in the footsteps of actress Julie Andrews, who played the role of Maria in the iconic 1965 film.

“To have a star like Carrie Underwood perform Maria in ‘The Sound of Music’ - and in such a very special and unique production - is exciting beyond words,” Rodgers & Hammerstein President Ted Chapin said in a press release.

Whether you think Underwood is a good fit for the role or not, the former American Idol winner already proved she can belt out “The Sound of Music” during Movies Rock, which took place at Los Angeles' Kodak Theater in December 2007.

Unfortunately she is too much nasal in her voice and accent in first few bars she is perfect country but does this poorly
and does not have the right depth and volume to do this like JUlie nailed it.

From time to time we see this in the entertainment world. A particularly beloved role is being recast for a remake, and the new actor/actress is facing the monumental task of filling some rather large shoes. Poor Carrie Underwood. Julie Andrews go round' of Maria Von Trapp will be impossible to for Carrie to live up to, no matter how the music or plot is tweaked. I fear this will be a huge mistake for her personally, and professionally.

I have been a Carrie Underwood supporter. I enjoy her music and I was glad she won AI the year she did as she was the best singer at that time. Although, Mrs. Underwood is a TERRIBLE Actress. Her Christmas special fell completely flat and her role in the Soul Surfer was one of the worst acting I have seen. She is too bothered by her hair, make-up and portraying a stiff above the masses celebrity. I am quite disappointed in her transformation, honestly. I didn't think based on who she was in the beginning of her career, that she would turn into a narcissistic shallow person. I am not trying to be disrespectful although it is she who is portraying this image every time she is in the public eye. I will not be watching the remake of "Sound of Music". Unless she does a complete 180, gets acting lessons, starts to be more relatable and less shallow....then the movie will be a bust!

Hmmmm. I like Carrie's music and her country way is perfect for her but I think adding those little country twangs and nuances to this perfectly crafted musical is going to ruin it for me.

Ok, yes, she's pretty and she can sing but you don't give a role like this, who has to fill the very accomplished shoes of Julie Andrews...who hasn't proven she can act. Maybe she will do fine, but I don't see why this classic film had to be remade by anyone.

For some reason some of my words disappeared in my previous post that caused it to make NO sense whatsoever. What I meant to say was "Ok, yes, she's pretty and she can sing but you don't give a role like this to someone who hasn't proven that they can act when they have to fill the very accomplished shoes of Julie Andrews". Who knows maybe she will do fine but I don't see why this classic film had to be remade by anyone. To me Julie Andrews will always bee the ONLY Maria.

I think if you compare their careers up to this point of Underwood's life there is a certain parity. Andrews was 30 for Sound of Music, Underwood is 29. Screen and TV roles at least on IMDB (sorry for quick research lol) are 6 -3 in Andrews favor as of 1965. I'm not sure I agree with the casting either but I don't think you can rule her out based on Andrew's resume of accomplishments up to and including "The Sound of Music".

I am actually excited to see if Carrie can develop the voice needed to really pull of the Sound of Music. Clearly she is not there now, but she has a natural ability to sing and if schooled over the next year, it could really be spectacular. Good luck Carrie and you vocal coaches!

I like Carrie, but she needs to stick with her genre. Why do we need to remake a perfect movie? It's like trying to repaint Mona Lisa or make a new statue of David. They've been done, they are perfect and we love them. And we can enjoy them over and over. Now can we please move on to something original?

I do not view her as iconic...what is being said is that she is a decent example to women of today.
most young women stink today....so we need more of Underwood. Julie Andrews is the queen and very
few meet her beauty and grace as a lady. i'm talking young women in 2013. Most of them are deadbeats

Hi: I used to sing in the bass section of a Philharmonic Chorus. I'm 67 yrs old. I love music and I can appreciate Underwood's talents in her line of work. But I believe for what I heard in the promotion video, her voice it is no suitable for the role. I'll give you an example of what I'm talking about. Early in the 90s, Diana Ross, who's talents can not be denied, sang at The Vienna New Year Christmas Concert. Flanking her where Placido Domingo and Jose Carreras, two world wide known tenors. Ms Ross presentation was one of the sorriest I have ever heard. Why? Because she was matched with the wrong performers and music. I hope that the same will not happen to Ms Underwood.

Carrie Underwood is not a mid-range vocalist. She has a HUGE range and can hit all the notes she needs to hit to play this role. Sure, no one can replace Julie Andrews, but the hate and bashing Carrie is getting is unreal and unfair. Carrie has 5 Grammys and over 100 major music awards. She deserves a chance before she is bashed and written off as a train wreck. Not cool. Moreover the original cast of Sound of Music- including Christopher Plummer- have been tweeting and offering support for Carrie all day long. The oroginal Gretl is thrilled for Carrie and did a video blog, and tweeted.

Sandi Patti is in her 50s!!! She has the voice, but is waaayyyyy too old for this role. Carrie Underwood will be great as Maria Von Trapp.

TThere appears to be no limit to the depths entertainment pimps will descend.

When NBC actually delivers on this threat (yes, "threat"), they well defecate on the beauty and the sacred image of "The Sound of Music." They will frolic in the slime with those who "create" the toxic broadcasts that have contaminated TV for years.

How disgusting to defile such a beautiful story and production as has been "The Sound of Music" for decades.

Carrie Underwood, a product of trash TV, as Maria? Heaven help us all.

agree. So much hate and the poor girl hasn't even been given a chance to show what she has got. The video above clearly shows that she can pull off the singing. She needs an acting coach of course, and a dance coach to teach her the Austrian folk dances, etc- but she can pull off the singing.

I'd rather gouge my eyes out ... Rodgers and Hammerstein are rolling over in their graves about now ... What's next? Tim McGraw as Tevye?

A remake is supposed to better than the original, otherwise, what's the use? This will be a wasted effort. Carrie doesn't have the vocal range or power of lungs required by this score, as proved by the video on this page. . . . And for the Christmas following this, are they going to make the a move about Mother Teresa starring Dolly Parton?

This is just wrong. Are the people in showbiz not tired of remaking classics? Leave it alone. If you want to do remakes do the ones that bombed at the box office such as "gigli" or "glitter" come to mind but leave the classics untouched, may as well repaint an old da vinci painting or rewrite a shakespeare classic.

First, this is a play, not a remake of the movie. Second, Julie Andrews did not perform live, but was in a pre recorded movie. Third, this generation has no clue about the TSOM. Fourth, Carrie has always excelled at anything she has tried in her career. I don't think this will be any less amazing. Give the girl a break and critique her once the show is over.

Carrie is a 5 Time Grammy winner and an exceptionally gifted Live Vocalist. She can do this with an acting coach, etc- and she has a year to prepare. It is not like they cast Tonedeaf Taylor swift. Now THAT would be a travesty.

Why do white people keep saying that there IS a race card being played? There is no such thing as a RACE CARD. I don’t agree with Minaj that Steven Tyler was being racist. He just said what he said, and just was being too closed minded.

But to say that African Americans are always playing the race card is being absolutely dismissive, so that america never has to really deal with real issues of discrimination that occurs to people of color. That’s not a race card, that’s reality.

No? Tell you what, the next time a Jew accuses someone of being anti-semitic, let’s see if you tell THEM that they’re playing the race card, the way you just said you’re tired of AA’s using it! Pretty sure you wouldn’t. If Jews say it happened to them, then it’s an atrocity, like with Mel Gibson. African Americans say it, then you’re just complaining…

this is totally off topic but couldnt help noticing your comment – first of all I agree with you there is no such thing as a "race card," because it's just a way for people to avoid the issues. The "race card" is in itself a sort of "trump card" people pull when they can't defend their views.
But Second, you think Jews don't go through the same thing with the anti-semitism? Oh they very much do. People say they use "the holocaust card" or the "anti -semitic" card all the time whenever somebody Jewish brings it up.
I say for BOTH african americans and Jews, slavery DID happen, the Holocaust DID happen, both people are still dealing with it and bearing scars, individually and collectively, so society will just have to deal with it and show some respect.

White people bring up race just as much as black people – if not more. Just read the articles on this website that is about a black person and you'll see the many degrading comments about black people. Oh and in the Minaj/Tyler case...he shouldn't have apologized. Minaj is ignorant. She wouldn't know a racist comment if it bite her in the face.

Carrie is a pretty lady with a very nice, country voice. But I won't watch her perform Sound of Music. I saw the movie as a child in 1965 and thereafter since. Julie Andrews' beautiful voice will always be in my mind and heart and I don't care how well someone's voice is – they will never sing it as well as Julie sung it all those years ago. Kind of like Judy Garland and Over The Rainbow. So many people have recorded that song. There are jazz versions, pop versions, r&b versions – but imo, no one will ever replace Garland's version – no one.
