CMA Awards golden couple on the story behind 'Over You'

Country music power couple Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert stole the show at the CMA Awards Thursday night, picking up male and female vocalist of the year, respectively, as well as the song of the year honor, making them the first married couple to do so.

Shelton also won entertainer of the year for the first time. "The Voice" coach told CNN that his career is "in uncharted territory, and we’re trying to figure out what the right things to do are."

Taking home the coveted entertainer of the year award, he said, "I guess we’re doing the right thing! And it’s such a good feeling, because everything I do, first and foremost in my mind is how I’m representing country music. I will always try to push the boundaries as much as I can because that’s what every important artist that came before me did."

Shelton won the song of the year award for the track "Over You," which he wrote with his wife. Lambert told CNN that her husband doesn't always have the confidence to write, so they did it together.

"We wrote 'Over You' about his brother that passed away 15 years ago, and it came out in January as my single. His dad passed away that same month," Lambert said. "And the whole story is just so real, and so raw and emotional, and Blake’s not a super-confident songwriter. I mean he’s a really great artist, but he never has a lot of confidence as a songwriter and I’m a songwriter first and foremost, so sometimes I have to force him to write."

So to win the song of the year CMA Award "not as artists, not as a couple, but as two songwriters, and to celebrate it together, it’s really amazing," she added.

The lead nominee at the CMA Awards was Eric Church, who picked up the album of the year title last night with "Chief."

The "Springsteen" singer told us that he actually wasn't expecting to take the win, considering he was just a best new artist nominee last year.

"To go from there to here in a year I think is a testament to the record, I think it’s a testament to the fans, I think it’s a testament to the path that we’ve been on," he said. "It’s been longer, but I think it’s been the right way, and we’ve built it the right way and I’m proud of it."

Country music as a whole has become a major force in pop culture - see, ABC's new series "Nashville" and Taylor Swift setting records with her latest album, "Red" - and Church recalls a time when the music wasn't so mainstream.

"When I started in 2005 ... I remember playing college campuses, and it wasn’t cool to have a country artist’s face or name on your shirt. It wasn’t cool, it wasn’t hip," he said. But now, "that's all I see. ... I see country artists with that demographic, with that age."

What's brought about the change, he thinks, is that country artists have become more creative.

"We're killin' it," he said, noting how country burns up the Billboard charts. "I think a lot of that is that we've let creativity be the driver."

Well that's something we have in common then. I'm also a republican believe it or not. And on that note here's another Obama joke. Oh and I did check out those sites. Seem interesting and funny in some ways.

Obama was leaving the country club golf course when he was accosted by an armed robber who demanded, "Give me all of your money!" Barack haughtily replied, "Do you know who I am. I'm the President of the United States!" The robber snarled back, "Then give me all MY money."

Ok ok. I'll give you one today. Hopefully you haven't heard it already. It's an Obama joke. But it's one just about everyone can laugh about. And well if you happen to be a republican, maybe it gives you something to smile about today lol.

Obama is in the oval office. One of his advisers comes up to him and says "Sir we just got word 2 Brazilians were killed in Afghanistan today." Obama hangs his head and quietly prays. Then he looks up and says "Okay now tell me. How many are in a brazillion?" :)

Ok. But let us experience one of your best jokes. I would be delighted if you would. I believe if we ever met, there would be a potential for a friendship. I enjoy the company of such people. It keeps me on my toes. I appreciate you, you have definantly made a boring article way more interesting. :) Not that I have anything against country.

At least I can spell pedestal. You have proven youself to be even more of the bigot than I expected. Before you start to say someone is mentally challenged..... learn how to spell. It might help you... You must enjoy commenting on things, totallly off subject, and berate people that think you, or your humor is pathetic.... I feel sorry for you... You obviously have a hard time having fun, besides making poop jokes. I have enjoyed this. You are amusing in your own way. Not that I enjoy laughing at you. but rather laughing with you. Given time, you will not limit your humor to only include just poop jokes...... T here are other jokes. Try telling me the best one you know. I want to find some more. And you seem to have the superior knowledge here. So, give it your best shot. :)

Ok you got me. I did misspell it. I didn't think it was right but i didn't check it either. Never claimed my grammar is perfect because i know it isn't. Again think of me what you will. Bigot or not i don't give a damn. I do enjoy commenting on things. Not necessarily berating people. But like i said before i do like to stir the pot a little sometimes. You feel sorry for me? Again your assuming that commenting on here is all there is to my life. I assure you my life is quite fun and fulfilling. And we do have one thing in common. I too have enjoyed this. I like a good arguement every now again. As for the only poop jokes limit ending one day. I suppose we never know what the future holds. But right now i'm still having fun stirring things up. As for a joke now. I will pass. Maybe if enough time goes by. Maybe then i will share. But not now. I believe this arguement has run it's course. We'd both do well to let this be the end.

You obviously care what i say. Because you went back to this page.I came back to this page to see your pathetic attempts at trying to be funny. :) Indeed, you are funny. But not because of your poop jokes.

Actually i've already proven my sense of irony. I'm not going to repeat myself just because you're too mentally challenged to understand it. Think of me what you will. I honestly do not give a damn. No i came back here knowing full well that you would be back up on your self righteous, judgmental pedastol. So i returned to once again shove you off. That much i care to do and am ALWAYS willing to do! And you're right! We do know who the self righteous one here is! Your posts show it's you perfectly clearly! Now with that being said here's a nice poo poo platter for me to leave you with! Enjoy it while you re-evaluate your life and moral values. It really does seem like you need to do that you know!

The so called "volent" reference was from a videogame. Do you know what Skyrim is??? And the othe rreference is from a RayWJonson video earlier this year. Like i said. You have to fight fire with fire. You can say what you want to believe, but that doesn`t make it true. You don`t have a good sence of humor. Pooping on people, Really??? That is childish. We are obviously aware of who is the self-righteous one here.. Have you any idea how rediculous you are being? You jumped all over someone in the comments above for saying your jokes are`nt relevent.... Which it isn`t.... I believe you to be the one with major character flaws. And no, I am definatly not perfect. If i was.... I wouldn`t have to look at CNN for news.... Face the facts...... This is a news site, not a place for you to project your feelings and ideas on the general populace. It would be nice to go to CNN without having to see lame poop jokes in the comment section. You must have no other life besides trying to be funny. And you obviously don`t

Mr. Anallee retentive (my new pet name for you): Ok so you got those comments from other sources. Monkey see monkey do eh? Does it make it ok for you to say them??? No. It doesn't. I mean are you aware it's actually illegal to suggest violence against others over the net in some states??? And yes i realize my poop jokes are crude but there is NOTHING illegal about them. True that a person can say what they believe and it's not necessarily the truth. But i wouldn't say it if it wasn't the truth. That's just how i am. You on the other hand hide behind your facade of self righteous judgement of others. Like i said before MORAL COWARD! And actually i have a great sense of humor. Ask anyone that really knows me and they'll tell you i always have a good joke or a funny story to tell. And rushing to judgement of people isn't childish as well. Again you've proven yourself a hypocrite. You also are being ridiculous because of that. True i did as you said and jumped on them. And perhaps i shouldn't have. But what can i say??? I like to stir the pot sometimes. It makes things more interesting. "This is a news site, not a place for you to project your feelings and ideas on the general populace." Actually it is a place for that! Perhaps you've heard of the 1st amendment. It guarantees our right to freedom of speech. AND GUESS WHAT??? THIS SITE AND THESE COMMENTS ARE PROTECTED BY IT!!! So you can take your fascist wants and beliefs and stick them! Ah more judgement of me. Not that it's any of your business, but my life is actually quite fun and fulfilling.

You're sure i'm "secretly insecure" about myself? Yet more hypocracy from you. You see i am insecure in some ways and i can admit that. So it's not really any secret. You on the other hand attempt to hide yours behind a facade of self righteousness like a moral coward. "Enjoy the smell of your own poop, cuz your jokes Stink." Just like your grammar (but we've been over that before so no sense beating a dead horse), your morals, your ethics, your opinions, and your self righteousness. "I hope you enjoy your own bodily smells, because your not geting any on me". Obviously true. I can't actually get any on you through a computer. But it's also obvious just how deeply unnerved by it you are. And that makes you soooooooo fun......FOR ME TO POOP ON!!!

Annoyed? Not at all. As i stated before i LOVE pointing out your character flaws. I LOVE pointing out your self righteousness and now evident megalomania (I mean you're leading a "crusade" against me??? Really??? What's next? An attempt to reclaim the holy land??? Or perhaps an attempt to resurrect yourself to save humanity???). And i do appreciate irony. Which is why i find it both ironic and hilariously hypocritical that you, in your state of self righteousness, so willingly damn others for making poop jokes and yet you so readily stoop to lower levels such as suggesting violence and making di ck sucking referrences.

Very happy for Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert. Blake is such a gentleman on The Voice and seems to really support his team picks. Bet he won't have too much trouble getting the cream of the crop next time around. He won so many important awards that the contestants will all want to work with him. He knows just what it takes to succeed in the business. And having a stellar songwriter and singer for a wife doesn't hurt either.

I agree, and its always that way. Who ever is in charge of sound production for this network/program, should be replaced. They have sound checks for hours before. You think they can get it right. But people get up there and get so involved in playing that they end up turning up thier amps and instruments and it just creates disaster. The audio techs probably have a hard time trying to keep it all in line. I am sure they are not happy most of the time, espeically when they tell the artists NOT to make adjustments to their set up.

The sound and lighting effects were terrible. You couldn't hear the singers for the music. Plus couldnt see the entertainers for the back lighting. It was all so dark .Plus does everyone wear baseball caps andt shirts. What has happened to our country music. Dont' even reconize it as country anymore. Sounds like pop to me. Very few songs even sounded country. Apppreciate those who dress up like they appreciate that it is a special night. It all sounds like hard rock not country.
