'Mockingbird Lane': A show worth saving?

[Editor's Note: Stop reading this post now if you don't want to know what happened on the premiere of "Mockingbird Lane."]

Friday night may very well have been the final word on NBC's "Mockingbird Lane," which boasts one of the most expensive pilots this season.

This reboot of the classic sitcom "The Munsters" reportedly cost $10 million, and you could see every penny on screen. (And yes, the theme song survived.)

The show, written by Bryan Fuller – best known for short-lived gems like "Pushing Daisies" and "Wonderfalls – and directed by "X-Men's" Bryan Singer, mostly centered on Eddie Munster's coming-of-age.

Whereas most boys his age learn about the facts of life, Eddie had to learn that he's really a werewolf. (No, son, it wasn't a "baby bear" that terrorized your fellow boy scouts.)

The one "plain" member of the Munsters, niece Marilyn, was of course charged with finding the family a new home on 1313 Mockingbird Lane.

Jerry O'Connell's Herman Munster is the biggest departure from the original series, a dad who wants to do right by his family, if only his defective heart didn't keep getting in the way. (He is after all, the product of several dead bodies sewn together.)

Portia de Rossi's Lily Munster required the least amount of updating. Despite a couple of memorable entrances (her clothes are woven together by spiders at one point), there wasn't much for her to do. She mostly just worried about Eddie learning the truth.

Eddie Izzard stole every scene as Grandpa Munster (call him "D"), who is truly unapologetic for the family's lifestyle of eating anything or anyone, if it serves a purpose – and in some cases, hypnotizing the neighbors to help keep up the house.

Grandpa and Marilyn butting heads was interesting to watch. Despite her "plain" status, she's mostly quite supportive of the family's endeavors, but Grandpa isn't too fond of her.

Grandpa's scheme to invite Eddie's scoutmaster over in order to eat him didn't quite go as planned, since Lily objected, but Grandpa transformed into his natural, demonic-looking self and scared the poor guy. (He fell down into the basement and died.)

So, Eddie learned the truth from Herman. Herman got a new heart, and the scoutmaster's blood made Grandpa look 30 years younger. Plus, Eddie got a new pet dragon, Spot.

Dark humor? You bet. Though "Pushing Daisies" dealt with death, this show takes it a good deal further. And I have to guess that's what made NBC uncomfortable.

It's unlikely that we'll see more of "Mockingbird Lane," but stranger things have happened (season two of "Breaking In," anyone?). What I saw was a show that absolutely deserved a second chance. It wasn't the best pilot of the season, but it was far from the worst. If we get to see a second episode, I'll definitely check it out.

What did you think? Would you like to see more "Mockingbird Lane?" Share your thoughts on video, or comment below.

I thought the pilot was great, and if it had gone to series, would have exploded in popularity. The executives see a normal or below average initial performance and get skittish. But the fact was it was a smart show, a great reimagining of a series that was big in its own day, and if they'd have some nuts, would have paid great dividends. A coin with risk on one side often has reward on the other, and ML certainly would have given that reward.

I've watched the show on "Demand" several times, and love it.
The show would still work if most of the special effects were taken out. The key to my liking it was the dialog between the actors.
It would have been nice if another network (SYFY) would have picked it up.

YES!!..it is worth saving..it wasn t so bad that didn t deserve at least one season..a little expensive if the pilot alone costs 10 millions..n maybe this is the reason of canceling..but i personally enjoyed the pilot..peace

I just watched the pilot and it really grabbed my attention, I would definately watch it again to see where the story leads to. What does it take for NBC to give this show a chance? It's better than half of the shows that NBC currently has.

We loved it - the dark humor, all of it - especially Eddie Izzard. We were soooo disappointed to learn that only the pilot had been made and that (as far as we know) the series hasn't been picked up yet. Please keep it going, keep the same writers, and keep the same cast - thanks!

Please bring this fantastic show back for a regular season.

I'm sure because I'm part of the "older" generation, my opinion may not b deemed as with it, but I feel u have to decide who will b ur audience? The old Munsters appealed to all age groups, it was fun! This new version which I liked in many ways, although a little too dark n bloody for me, seems to b confused on that aspect! I would never let my grand kids watch this and where was the humor? Seemed conflicted in those areas. Actors were great n special effects awesome! Love the idea, good luck!

I saw the pilot by chance, loved it, really sorry to hear it wasn't picked up and hoping it does get picked up by a network that can see what makes it extremely different is that it doesn't fit in a one stamp catagory and that makes a potentially good series. You have to follow it not knowing where the creator will take us, that to me would make it worth watching.

OK, NBC, let us remember the biggest mistake you have ever made in canceling a show, two words:
      STAR TREK
You thought that was not a good show either and cancelled it. Wished you would have re-thought that one now did'nt you. I stumbled on MockingBird Lane by mistake and had mixed feelings but did laugh. I think the show would be great at least one whole season; so we canbuy and rewatch over and again. It is good to find out how the origin of spot and the character's development. Since in the origin Marilyn actually looked different than the rest of the family you had a better feel of her character. The others were all believable except Herman but he can work on developing the character or recast. Better yet sell the rights to cable and let them get all the ratings. Just a thought.

I just watched 1313 Mockingbird Lane On-Demand and man I really really liked it and I'm so hoping that it gets picked up. I am 21 yrs old so I was not around for the original Munsters but, I have watched a handful of them and i loved it. Now this re-imagining was kinda awesome and come on we get hottie Jerry O'Connell and the hilarious Eddie Izzard it seems like a dream cast. I for one will be very upset if NBC does not pick it up for the coming season. Lastly, I want to address the issue of production costs, 10 million is a boat load of money just for a pilot. That being said its true that you could see that come through on screen, they just need to cut the budget a bit and then its all blue skies and rainbows.

Surprising, and terrific! Loved the Original when I was a kid and doubted this new version would be worth seeing at all. but I was wrong. What a great find. So refreshing to see a remake that didn't suck. How they up dated and handled the morbid aspect of the show was great. Today's audiences are watching programs like "DEXTER" and "The WALKING DEAD". If this show had any chance at all they had to be more dark and visual. They did a great job being truly evil and still being lovable at the same time. Please make more and don't water it down.

My husband and I thought it was incredible and humorous. Granted my sense of humor is somewhat morbid.... I can understand why some people took offense, but really, if they don't like how bloody it is, either don't watch it or NBC can move show it on a late time slot. I would at least do a season....so I have enough episodes worth buying!

I thought it was one of the best [dark] comedies on TV and have been looking for it ever since. I want to see more! I really hope NBC doesn't cancel this one – why is it that all the quality programming ends up cancelled, while the cheap crap stays on? Surely there are more people in this country with discriminating taste than not!

Personally I loved it... but I love most programs featuring Eddie Izzard. If he's in it, it's usually weird and in an awesome sort of way! Also, if you like "dark / morbid" humor, or simply Eddie Izzard- definitely check out Bullet In the Face! It's a mini-series on where I recall to be, IFC. This was also taking a tremendous amount of heat for the violence / gore / humor, etc... It was even switched into later time slots, and the mini-series was shown in its entirety, in efforts to reduce the complaints. Essentially, it's an epic made-for-tv movie. Which did nothing to reduce the amount of viewers! Regardless, check it out! Truly fantastic and it further proves that society as a whole is delving deeper into the direction of dark and morbid comedies and dramas. NBC needs to stop being pansies and show it! If you watched my above mentioned series then you will see that things do get more eccentric, violent and bloody! It makes Mockingbird Lane look PG. Seriously, make more episodes, make more money- the capitalist way!

Too d ark for young viewers. Way too graphic. Almost appeared demonic. Certain scenes reminded me of Bram Stoker's Dracula. The show was not funny at all. Nothing like the original Munsters.

Interesting darkly fun show but the essentially evil murderous nature of Grandpa turns me off. It needs some balance to make it suitable as a comedy series. Perhaps a return of Scout Master Dave as a ghost or better yet an angel who follows Gramps around as an irritating conscience and won't let him claim more victims. Endlessly quoting the Scout Manual in order to make Grandpa...ahem...Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind, Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, Clean, and Reverent. The last will be a bit of a stretch for a vampire but that's where the comedy comes in.

I am a big fan of the original show and was very skeptical about the remake, until I saw the pilot. Special Effects alone made it spectacular..the new"Spot " has endless possibilities,Grandpa more gruesome and less zany but it worked.. Marilyn stole the show ;she was pure perfection . Lily and Eddie were decent; but what was missing the mark for me, was Herman. I can forego the fact that he is a normal sized corpse and that he could pass as a living person but his personality was painful to watch and in no way close to the original. I loved the show and was eager to see more but as most things I like, will probably never make it,,Maybe they can do a movie..

I absolutely loved this show. It was awesome. I loved the graphics. Yes, I watched the Munsters when I was a child. Yes, this is the grown up versions and not for children, but it really hit the spot. I was nto expecting it to be so ghoulish and full of gore. But, I grew up and so should the show. I think the show would have an awesome cult following. I normally watch all of the shows on HULU; I am not big on being chained to the TV and certain times. Oh but I would wait for this one every week. I would be disappointed when there would be a repeat. I actually watched it more than once on HULU, and that my dear is an awesome feat in itself. I had no idea that it had not been picked up. So I kep looking for new episodes and today researched to find out what the problem was. Sooooo disappointed. Every time I fall in love with and NBC show (like the Playboy Club) it goes away. I never watch NBC, but this could have really changed things for me. It was so much better than 666 Park Place (learned that was cancelled today too). I really want to see more. AWWWWWW Shucks. I wish grandpa could eat the person that decided to pull the plug.

I agree with most of these reviews... it was superbly done graphics-wise, wickedly fun dark humored but not overly grotesque (TrueBlood anyone?). WIth shows as popular as Breaking Bad, True Blood, American Horror Story, Sons of Anarchy... cable is out maneuvering the networks in ratings. They need to stop holding themselves back. Networks have a BAD habit of killing REALLY good shoes (Firefly anyone?)...my husband would like to add Trauma to the list of shows NBC canceled too early.

If nothing else, this show needs to be picked up on a cable network and allowed the fun it was meant to be. I loved all the actors and I bet it would recoup the cost of the 1st episode if they would only give it a chance.

NBC has all but faded into obscurity for me. The lackluster line up of shows held little appeal. I have no interest in faux reality thus the biggest loser lives up to its name; only trumped by The Trump himself. I saw a random commercial for Mockingbird Lane and sought out the source. I tried to set my DVR. I haven't watched anything on NBC in so long I didn't even know what channel it was. Only to find out this show didn't recieve the viewership hoped for. I would suggest advertising on different channels; I didn't even know it was premiereing except for a chance encounter. If you are that concerned about viewership think about a different day. This show may bring NBC out of obscurity. Jerry O'Connel is amazing, Eddie Izzard is inspired. Marilyn is too blond and too 60's makes her character unbelieveable; might think about jeans. Portia Rossi has just the right amount of surreal beauty and that boy makes a great Eddie. Great job reinventing the Munsters and appealing to a new generation though the older one might mourn for the days of yore.

Dear NBC do not be fool's so the pilot did not get a great review's but just like back when star trek aired but look at it today the star trek movies and show's it is so big you must not give up on mocking bird lane I'm a very big fan of the Munsters and have a lot of stuff I love the munsters and this show has a lot to offer the fans but you can't just give up this would be a great show if you aired it when all the season show's go off it will be great as a fill in in the summer when shows winter shows go of for the summer don't drop the ball on this if you do you are crazy shows like the munsters and Addams family were great shows but like I said about star trek the network drop it and the fans hit you with so meany letters that it came back and then the show took off very big if I could pay to air more of the mocking bird lane I would mocking bird land is going to be great NBC really think about this you will loose more that what you put in to the pilot and loosing this show would be a real crime you must read other peoples comments so don't be fools because if you just drop it you are fools just think about airing it in say April of 2013 at about 8pm and give it a chance again I think the show was very good so do not just drop it like a hot potato this would be very stupid!! in time Mockingbird Lane will produce more rating then any of these other shows like
30 Rock, Parenthood, Whitney, Guys with Kids, NBC Kids, It would be crazy for NBC to not continue with this very interesting show
Please do not disappoint the fans that have posted their comments if you do you are crazy and stupid.

The pilot was fantastic! I understand that there is no way to make a $10M per episode show make any money though. But, I think if the producers back off the heavy special effects (that were really good nonetheless), they can bring the costs waaaay down and still have a great show. A great show really only needs great character development and a solid plot.

I was skeptical about a reboot of The Munsters but this show won me over. I really like the characters and hope that they see fit to make this into a series. Please give this show a chance. It was well crafted on all levels and that is rare. I'm also not convinced that Marilyn is quite as "normal" as she seems and am intrigued to find out if I'm right.

Television shows, especially Scifi and Fantasy shows have been trending darker for quite a while now and it hasn't always been my cup of tea. I personally feel we could use a little more of the optimistic side of humanity shown in the star trek or original stargate shows instead of the "dark" side of humanity we seem so fond of exploring now. However they occasionally find a good blend, usually involving a lot of well done dark humor and I thought that Mockingbird lane had this in spades. The pilot didn't complely blow me away but I found it very compelling and a lot of fun and well worth following. I truly hope NBC doesn't make the mistke of canceling this show before it has a chance to prove its worth and viability.

OK guys, I am a very good christian, even known as a goodie two shoes and my kids had a hard time relating to me because I never did any drugs or smoked and such.

But I loved the original Munsters with Fred Gwynn and I love Mockingbird lane. True I was a little off when Herman didn't have his usual high forehead and bolts coming out of his neck. But looking more like a normal human (true most people don;t have a scare all the way around their neck, but hey.) would make for a lot less makeup which will keep the cost down for the future. Now that they have the majority of the cost done the future shows won't be as bad. I can assume that they can do a handfull of the morphing and then just repeat them will also keep the cost down. I would much rather have some repeated morphing then the shelve the series.

Please keep it going for the off season. I was really disappointing when it wasn't on again last Friday and still now knowing it won't be on tomorrow.

I thought the show was great. I didn't have any preconceived notions that it would be just like the original Munsters and was pleased to see that it was not. And yes it was dark at times, but I kind of expected that when I found out that Eddie Izzard was going to be in it. Anyone see the Riches? I do agree with other comments that if NBC does not want to pick up the series, let another network pick it up. I had mixed feelings about this show. It sounds like a lot of people think this show is too dark. I personally don't see it; I thought it was cute more than anything. (but then again, I watch "Dexter") I didn't see how this show was any worse than in the vampire/werewolf/zombie material that people are obsessed with right now. It seems more like it's playing into the genres that people are enjoying! I think it may have shot itself in the foot with the high budget, though– like hell NBC is going to fork over millions for this show to continue. If it did come back, I would enjoy it. I loved the old one, cute and campy. This one is cute and campy too but with some very creative twists and great special effects. I would love to see more of spot! Not to mention, I love that it's in the Bay Area (I liked how the Golden Gate peeks out just above the house!) Anyway, I think it would have a large audience if they "resurrected" the show. Hopefully they do!:)

I loved it. Yes, it's dark, but that's why I loved it. I think the world is ready for a show like this. It doesn't tip-toe around the fact that these people are monsters, literally. Grimm and Once Upon a Time have already tackled this. If there is low viewership, it is because of its low advertising. I had no idea it existed until it showed up on Hulu. The need to do more PR, especially on geek and gamer sites. I'm in my twenties and I grew up watching the original on Nick at Night. I also grew up with other dark but humorous shows and movies like Beatlejuice, Nightmare Before Christmas, and The Adam's Family. I truly hope it is saved.

I loved Mockingbird Lane! I thought Bryan Fuller did a great job re-imagining the show for this day and age. It was creepy and the dark humor makes it funnier than the original version. I did love old Munsters back when I was a kid, but I feel that this version is created for a more mature audience. I just saw this special since I had it recorded on my Hopper’s Primetime Anytime feature. A coworker at DISH told me that once enabled, my DVR automatically records three hours of the four major networks during primetime, so I don’t need to set timers for programs and can catch up when I have time for TV. I agree that Eddie Izzard stole the show, and I hope that NBC brings it back as a regular series!

  132. Too much like Addams

This show was too much like The Addams Family. It seemed as if the characters were aspiring to be as grandiose when the original series had them living in a much smaller house. There were times when the background muzak was too dark &/or romantic, like in the Addams films. Could have been more funny & irreverent. I was hoping that Portia's Lily would wear a bat-charm on her necklace, but looked too aristocratic in her dinner wear. They should have just gone for The Addams as a sitcom than make a pale imitation.

I agree! And not the orginal Addams family but the early 90's remake. It needed to be sillier and have less adult themes, in my opinion. But then again, I wish they would stop remaking everything and have an orginal idea every once in a while.

I have to agree.... the Pilot was AMAZING. Yes it's a darker and edgier Munsters but the show itself is also time sensitive. I wouldn't want to watch some show about a family living in the 1960's with a Vampire Grandpa who you never see drink any blood and no one ever dies.... Forgive me but these are the times we live in!!! Wake up. The show was absolute genius and just the right amount of laughter. Bryan Fuller was the perfect person to bring on for this show.... Pushing Daisies would have survived if it hadn't been for the writers strike that took place during that time. And I believe if NBC controllers aren't complete and total morons... This show will survive too.

It was a complete and utter disgrace to the original, it wasn't funny what-so-ever and lacked every aspect of monsters trying to live like a "normal american family," absolutely dreadful.

Stupidist show I have seen in my life...morbid and not family friendly unless you like serial killer shows. I loved the original Munsters, they are playing to the choir. Why does NBC cancel everything right away? Why is Jerry O'Connel such a reliable showkiller? Why is Eddie Izard so awesome and not in literally every show, ever? Why can't Portia De Rossi find steady work? I wish this show was coming back.

What does a show have to do to survive these days? Back in the day, when a show premiered, all the episodes for that show were shown for that season and if it sucked, there was no second season. They didn't just cut it off after 1 or 2 episodes. NBC is notorious for cancelling worthwhile shows quickly. I do agree "Grandpa" was a bit disturbing, but tone him down a little bit and the show will be great. I was looking forward to episode 2.

What does it say about a culture that "loves" to watch and finds humor in cannibalism? Maybe we are being desensitised by the act as it is becoming a more common reality in our society. Grusome and disturbing.

Liked all characters except Grandpa. Way too grotesque for prime time and the original Grandpa, even silly for the most part, was not changing to gruesome figures eating everything in site. I agree with another comment that the rest of the characters Eddie, Herman and Lily, looked like ordinary citizens. I did love Lili's white dress!!
Bring Grandpa down a notch or two, then I'll watch again.

NBC very surprised at your producers not to see the valuable GEM in your hands! In a day and age when TV shows led so little to be desired, it was refreshing and wonderful. I loved this show! I mean my husband and I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED Mockingbird Lane. It was witty, funny, dark (good) sense of humor etc. etc. etc. I can not even start to express how hard we both laughed . It was clean dark sense of humor unlike the perverted, purely sadistic new version of American Horror. What a major disappointment that is worth taking out. that is a gem that went confused on what horror is. Mockingbird Lane reminded us of the Addams family movies in its wit and dark sense of humor, and besides the fact it was a remake of the old Munster made us want to watch it even more. The new version is nothing but a GEM! Bring it back please. Look forward to MORE!

Besides, whats so awful about "dark comedy?" It reminded us of the 2 movie versions of Adamms Family. That anyone could find such gold in such a goofy TV show (The Munsters) is amazing in itself. This was a refreshing, fun show. Compared to the nauseating shows such as "Honey BooBoo" and "The Housewives of (enter city), Mockingbird Lane was a relief from 'reality' tv. I'm tired of watching scripted garbage that are billed as 'reality shows'. I loved Eddie Izzard (unique character), and the storyline. I do not consider this a 're-make' in any sense of the word. If the Munsters would not have existed, this show would be highly rated and watched. Sometimes riding on the coat tails of another show is a great burden for a new series. This one stands alone in its own right.

I had mixed feelings about this reboot/remake when I first read about the premise, but after watching the "pilot" episode I am absolutely on board with this show as a series. The clincher for me was that as the episode's running time ran down, I found myself anxious for it to not end yet. As the credits rolled, I was left definitely wanting more. I very much hope they rethink canceling this show. I don't watch Greys Anatomy and hate every version of CSI. If we can give "The Neighbors" a shot why not give something that has great scenery and campy fun plot potential a chance?

Goose bumps were formed as soon as the the theme kicked in all the way to the revelation of Eddies new "pet" Spot the dragon!!! A fang-tastic pilot and i desperately hope to see a whole entire series to see what new revelations we can find out about the Munster's. Mocking Bird Heights will never be the same again. I loved this show! I watched it when it premiered before Grimm and again tonight on the computer. Please do the whole series! Why just show the pilot and tease us?

One thing I do agree with – the relationship between Grandpa & Herman was confusing. On one hand they are meant to hate each other, but then Grandpa is putting a new heart in Herman and bringing him back to life.

Also, Hermann's character needs a little more depth. Aside from having parts from many people, he seems just as normal as Marilyn. I got more of a feeling of uncomfortable ex spouses with Lily and Herman than passion when they first were together on the screen.

I still loved it. This show has so much potential. Please, some network, pick it up and run with it.

Yes the effects, costumes, sets were good. But it lacked (pardon the pun) Heart. I would love to see this version retooled a bit and presented again. The balance between comedy and horror are off. I really like it going darker, but it went alittle too dark. The only way for that to work is to broaden the comey to balance it out. I think Eddie Izzard is a brilliant casting choice but did not seem to have any chemistry with Jerry O Connell who is supposed to be the other lead. Ensemble people!!!! Despite the innocence and corniness of the original it was still about something. It was a typical family sitcom with a twist and there were subtle critques of american society & social norms. What was this show about? Our society today has a lot more to reflect and critque than in the Mid-1960"s. Today's television can be alot edgier as well. I Really hope they refine this and bring this to the fall schedule!!

    I WANT MORE!

Grandpa stole the show. Herman though not as large as I was hoping had all the heart of the original character and I could convincingly believe that he could win Lilly's heart. Eddie's lycantropy was well handled, and I loved the treatment of Grandpa as an alcoholic. Including Spot as the means to keep Eddie from hurting anyone – awesome.

Left me with a ton of unanswered questions – how did Herman become a Munster – i know Grandpa is responsible for his current state – but what led to him becoming assembled of other people's parts? Does Herman have any issues with what he has become, or bear any resentment for his conditiion? Is Marilyn as emotionally disengaged as she appeared in the beginning? She came off almost like a sociopath in her first scene, but then later shows concern for the scoutmaster. Will Eddie gain control over his abilities?

I could see this show having a long life, bringing in new characters into the neighborhood, seeing them trying to keep Grandpa in check, perhaps watching Marilyn become something worse than all of them in her desire to fit in.

I really really hope they give Mockingbird Lane a full season pickup.

The opening dialogue between Marylin and the real estate fellow was quick, dry, witty, and dark (making it the best part of an opener whose dialogue was uneven).

This continued as the Marylin/Grandpa sections were delightfully sly and dark, while the Herman/Lily/Eddie interchanges were like a pained "Leave it to Beaver" episode, as the feel good family vibes clashed with the artfully dark tapastry already set.

The Herman/Grandpa relationship was confusing. They lacked the tension of the original series and at times blended from plot conflict to comic relief in a single scene. It was if the Herman character was torn between the new "good father" motiff and the old clunky Herman of the original show (the "buffoon father"). You cannot be both Ned Flanders and Homer Simpson.

All in all, I would watch it again, just to see if there is anything left (the only real plot advancement in the pilot was origin story we already knew). If they had to do it over again, a slower pace would have been much more useful – as Eddies personal changes in a new school and Herman's developing need for a fresh heart could both have carried through several episodes.

As is, Herman's story is already told, making him static from this point forward, Marylin is too reactive to do more than bring a boy over for dinner, Eddie's changes only carry weight as he tries to hide/resist them, and really, only Lily's character has any internal conflict left to mine.

Good for a short season (3-5 more episodes), then nail the coffin back shut for another generation.

  279. a pleasant surprise

Mockingbird Lane caught all of my attention when I watched it on TV. The visual effect of spiders webbing a gown for Lily was breath taking. Every main characters were so different in their own ways forming an unique family. I loved the fact that not all the characters were nice and innocent. The blood thirsting Grandpa made the wannabe-vegetarian-werewolf Eddie even more adorable. While Grandpa played with words showing the bitter/dark/dry humors about the ongoing situations, Marilyn's simple responses were actually quite attractive in a mysterious way – there might be something more about this seemingly charming young lady. Herman was the clown because of his sensitive heart. Overall, I was tempted to know more about what will happen to this family, and what Marilyn might really be capable of.

I agree with the comments on there being more to Marilyn than there appears; this was my favorite part of the pilot. In the original series, the joke was that Marilyn was completely normal, bright and chirpy–essentially just like all the young girls on all the other sitcoms at the time. From this show, I got the feeling that she has her own darkness going on. It would be fun to see this developed if additional episodes are made.

The acting was brilliant, the sets were gorgeous, and the writing was intelligent and very very funny. I really liked it. Thought it was pretty engaging, although a bit uneven, but most pilots are at the very least uneven. This one was entertaining, and Eddie Izzard and Portia de Rossi were excellent. The actress who played Marilyn was wonderful and gorgeous to boot. I would watch this if it became a regular series ... or, at least, I would record it on the DVR and watch it eventually!

Definitely reminded me much more of the Addams Family than the Munsters, but I always preferred the Addams Family anyway. I'm a huge fan of Bryan Fuller's other series, and I'm glad to see he hasn't lost his touch. I would love to see more of this show.

There is no way to have this show on more than one week. How are they going to eat a neighbor each week? Hell the premise of them going to a new house was because the kid ate his scouts mates and leader. (I know they ended up saying they weren't killed)

The premise of the original Munsters is that they realize the villagers always uprise and kill the monster. So they are going to get along in the modern world fighting their inner demons. They are trying not to get discovered. This idiotic interpretation has them "unapologetic-ally being what they are" no matter what the outcome might be. A Serial Killer that kills innocent citizens will have to be caught.

This show should never be shown again.

    Original show was great.

This show was terrible. The things that mace the original funny and unique was missing and sorely needed. Reimaginings sometimes work but In this case resulted in a Tim Burton "esque" reject.

Turned it off after 25 minutes. Just awful!

The pilot was outstanding. I would definitely watch the series, and see it as a brilliant move for NBC. It takes a fresh look at a classic and does it in a much darker way. It pays homage to original, while providing us with a modern and more adult approach. Special effects and costumes were also amazing. Well done!

"Mockingbird Lane" was FANTASTIC!! It's a fresh new take on the original MUNSTERS show (which I used to watch). I like this version much better than the original. The writing is brilliant, as is the cast. Also love the sets and effects and the overall "look" of the show. NBC... KEEP THIS SERIES ON THE AIR!!

For those who didn't enjoy the show. That's okay. But instead of trying to remove a great show/series for those who enjoyed it and want the series to continue... I'm sure you have cable or satellite TV so for one hour a week you can select from thousands of other programs to watch. Let those of us who enjoyed the show FINALLY have a show with quality to watch!!!

I was not expecting anything, the originals were cute , campy fun. I was more an Adams Family fan. But this was a great show. I figured it would be weak predictable TV. Wow was I shocked and laughed though the whole show.

DEFINITELY WORTH SAVING. I was raised in a family that enjoyed shows such as The Addams Family and The Munsters so when I heard that they were rebooting this classic family, I've been anxious to see the turn out, and I was thoroughly impressed. The take on the family, the sets, the costumes. Amazingly done.

Keep this show going for at least 5-8 more episodes to see how it does. But I'm banking that it will surprise us all in a positive way.

  344. I actually watched it.

My opinion, after watching the show, was that it was a very well done re-telling of the original Munsters story. I thought that the actors played together beautifully as an ensemble; and I was thrilled to see the imaginative details like Spot the dragon and Lily's spider web gown brought to life with stunning effects. I truly hope NBC doesn't pull the rug out from under this show before it really gets a footing. I would really like to see more.
Also, to my fellow posters, if you didn't see the show, your opinion has no real value to anyone. Please take that morsel of logic back to the real world and think before you speak.

If unfunny idiocy such as "The Office" and "My Name Is Earl" can last as long as they did, then "Mockingbird Lane" deserves at least the opportunity to see how the people respond. Even though "Grimm" has helped NBC, the network still needs to break its old habit of cancelling good shows and promoting garbage.

Maybe if the plot of "Mockingbird Lane" included having Lily or Marilyn compete on a reality show for singers, NBC would be more interested.

My husband and I had to watch it separately, he got to see it when it premiered, I had to watch the next morning on NBC.com, but we agreed it is fantastic and we love it. We think it's a darkly funny, sweet update of the old classic. The Munsters was considered a weird and wild, nonconformist show, when it started out, too. If it could survive as many years, and as many movies (even with all that awful grey-blue and green grease paint, when it went to color) as it did, I think Mockingbird Lane could last at least a full season. We are HUGE Eddie Izzard fans, and we were completely thrilled to find out he was to play Grandpa Munster. He poured himself totally into it, and it showed! I don't think we should begrudge Portia's Lily for not doing much, you can't exactly pack personality punch for each character in an ensemble into one pilot. They didn't know when they were filming it that it would be their one chance. I'm sure she would have had plenty more coming for her character in later episodes. I really wish SyFy or Chiller would pick it up, or FX or AMC.

I am sorry for anyone who missed it.

i thought the pilot was promising and i hope to see where it goes. Other folks are correct in terms of Eddie Izzard taking each scene he was in. More than that, however, is that The Munsters (which I adored as a kid) always had this undertone of never getting the whole story. Mockingbird Lane promises more of this and yet, clues the audience in to what it has been missing - or choosing to deny. That, I think, is bloody brilliant.

I love this show. Finally, we get to see how spot looks like– a cool dragon. It's cool that Lily gets to wear glamorous gowns, Herman is actually good looking, kind hearted, loving and smart albeit butchered up and Eddie is such an adorable character one can sympathize with. Looking forward to Grandpa and Marilyn scenes as well.

The set design is fabulous and the pilot is pretty darn cute.

I would love to see where the show will go from the pilot. Aside from being a huge Bryan Fuller and Munsters fan, I am sick of all the predicable story-lines and reality TV show's being aired on every single station these days. The original Munsters thought outside the box, and while it was a little out there, it was successful and entertaining. If given the change, I think the new and completely different version can do the same thing. Especially with the supernatural craze currently rocking the entertainment world.

I hope NBC, or any network for that matter, decides to at least try out a few episodes and make a decision from there. Pilots are always so hard to go off of.

I would LOVE too see more of Mockingbird Lane!

I thought this was a great imagining though I was quite skeptical before I saw it. I do have to admit there was quite a bit of gore I had not expected, but my boyfriend and I thought the special effects were awesome. I would definitely watch this if it were to come on television weekly, but I see the problem here from the pilot. They spend 10 million dollars on this pilot and so many special effects that now any continuing episodes would have to live up to the pilot and because of this, I don't think this show will make it any further because it would just cost too much to make. They went overboard on the production costs and people would expect future graphical things to continue so here lies the hole this show sadly is falling into.

Totally agree with you on every point, Calia. WONDERFUL cast and effects, and the script for this pilot was excellent! BUT... Grandpa is going to have to quit "drinking" again, and the fact that they like to eat humans is going to eventually paint the whole premise into an inescapable corner. What with technology and modern forensics where they are developmentally, I can't see the family getting away with these shenanigans for long. Portraying law enforcement as bumbling fools is not an option in the premise being shown with this pilot, so the writers are going to have to pull virtual miracles out of their asses week after week.
Instead of this being produced as a weekly series, it should be carefully kept under wraps until the Halloween season, and THEN made as a "special presentation. At 10 MIL an hour, this is SCREAMING expensive right out of the gate. Don't get me wrong, I did appreciate every minute of the program, but really can't see it week after week... the QUALITY of the show would certainly have to suffer if it's tried the old fashioned way.
I do certainly like this show, and am hungry as Grandpa just as himself and Eddie would be in his "baby bear" persona to devour more and MORE of this, I would be content to wait 'til next season to repeat the joy I experienced while watching this!
I'm now off to a web site to watch it yet AGAIN. It's truly one of those hours that can be watched again and again, and each time you do you see more and more.
Bottom line is... it was MAGNIFICENT compared to 99% of the literal DREK that haunts our airwaves.

Portia de Rossi and Eddie Izzard turned in great performances. Bryan Fuller's writing and Bryan Singer's direction – a la Evil Dead 2 for TV – was INSPIRED! Every bit of the budget was on the screen and worth every penny. Congrats to Michael Wylie (Grimm) and his Art Department!

For those that thought the show was slow, its due to the level of intelligence needed to understand the hysterically funny pun driven conversations. The show Mockingbird Lane was fantastic. It kept my wife and I laughing and glued to the television to see what happens next. I really liked the effects that everyone took on. I think the so called reboot of the series is fantastic. It is all done with a moderization of the original. The show took the aspect of the original and twisted it with a darker humor on what monsters would do in modern society. This show could air for a long time from simple twists to things even more complex.

I don't think NBC would even would reconsider if they do they will just release a total of 13 episodes and be done with it, like Awake. Some people are saying there isn't any type of creativity, well half of other channels are playing crap like Vampire Diaries which is complete take on Twilight, and there are so many reality TV shows that compete with The Jersey Shore. I think it is nice to have something that has been in my life when I was a kid watching the old and turning it something modern with new type of effects and story.

The Creativity part of the series came from the imagination from Bryan Fuller who did well with Pushing Daisy, but like all his projects after two seasons he will get an award and call it quits, which is also a shame.

I enjoyed the pilot and had been looking forward to seeing it since I heard about it in EW over the summer. I thought it was an interesting and original take on the Munsters, in which the characters in this version did not appear as the dead ringers for the horror characters they portrayed in the original series. I had mixed emotions about their appearance, especially with Herman, but I realize that the blocked head and bolts look Herman had in the '60s needed to be updated. I really enjoyed Eddie Munster's werewolf scene and thought they did a good job balancing horror and comedy. I loved seeing Spot at the end as well. There are many other details only true fans could appreciate. By true fans, I mean people who either loved the original series or just the horror genre itself. I would say that this show is not for kids unless parents actually supervised them. The humor is as others have said pretty dark in nature, especially with Grandpa playing with his food. In my opinion, I think there are enough people who enjoy supernatural shows to watch this show faithfully. There aren't many shows in the horror genre. Walking Dead, Being Human, and maybe Supernatural have decent followings. Just don't dumb down the show.

LOVED THE EPISODE. I think it is worth a try. the issues would be who would be the writers? at 10 million for an hour episode of the "pilot" it wouldnt seem cost efficient to cost that much for each episode. So with the graphics cut backs and some cgi, would it work? I would watch and think its a sound investment. I was actually thinking it was a seasonal program. The story was left unfinished and was searching to program my tivo for Friday. I hope they do more and this is just the beginning and not just a Halloween footnote. heck with a 1.6 rating how could executives overlook this?

The historic networks continually underestimate the intellectual level of the average watcher. Hence the success of new networks like AMC, TNT, FX, Showtime, HBO and Fox. The day of the traditional sitcom is OVER!! And please, no more ridiculous unscripted series (there is no "reality" involved at all). This show has humor, heart, visual interest, and plays off the nostalgia of our youth. Granted, not for the youngest viewer, but neither was the original series!!

I LOVED IT! It is worth saving. It is more graphic than the original but that's because they didn't have any sense of animation back then in the 1960s and it was more hokey. The REVAMP is more believable and more exciting. It's unique! Many people didn't think Grimm would be popular but it did and even Grimm is graphic in many areas, so people who complain that Mockingbird Lane is graphic or ruins their TV-show night are being hypocritical. I say give it a chance, at least a year contract for a trial basis. I WOULD love to watch this just before Grimm! It's better than watching some stupid Drama show like Desperate housewives, disrespectful TV-show like Honey boo boo. This is actually better than Vampire Dairies or True Blood–it's a better run show than any of them, ever.

I loved it. I too watched the old series and all the made for television remakes. I really like this one. It is different and explains the Munsters in a real world setting that we did not get from the old series. I thought it was visually stunning as well. With all the things on television right now that people are keeping that are terrible, and the ending of great television shows, NBC needs to keep this one. At least run one season. I mean they picked up Animal Practice and then dropped it but at least it got 6 episodes. Plus, I do not watch Friday night tv. This is the first Friday show I have sat down and watched in a long time. This remake appeals to a darker audience, but ABC has their 666 Park Avenue which I am less impressed with then this show. I think this series will be a cult classic if they keep it for a season. I loved it.

Just got done watching Mockingbird Lane. It was morbid, graphic and unsuitable for children. It actually ruined my watching Grimm on Friday evening. For a "reboot" it was a horrible remake of the Munsters that I knew and loved. You took Grandpa and made him into a hideously gross and distorted character. Marilyn was a nondescript, creepy character. And the gore and the killing in the Pilot was unnecessary. What a waste of a budget for such a il-advised TV Pilot.

I much rather show this to children and think this is more suitable than Honey Boo Boo and 16 & Pregnant. This is fiction. Plus, have you ever read the original fairy tales that children are told now. People died in those stories to teach children lessons. Hansel and Gretel died in the original story to teach kids not to go into strangers homes. The prince didn't know snow white would wake up if he kissed her, he kissed a dead girl. And you have Twilight and Harry Potter now. This series was no darker than those. At least this show teaches a family dynamic of togetherness and love.

I mean in order to make a re-imagining of something so classic work you cant stray completely away from the things that worked so well in the first place with the original! The only thing that showed any sort of promise was Eddy Izzard as Grandpa..he was funny here and there, but overall this show was a disaster! I watched the old series and yes its fond in my heart. But this. To be serious and with its slight humor I found that I want more of it. Yes it had it moments but geez no show can compete with the original. Look what they did with the batman franchise.

As a stand alone piece or if it is picked up eventually, I'll watch, but except for the character's names and the town/street, there is little resemblance to the original. It had more in common with: The Addams Family. As for why if may or may not be a series, unfortunately the networks want cheap and frankly the audience has been so dumbed down for years, they prefer a baloney sandwich to one a steak.

Loved it! Hope they pick it up and make it a regular show. Probably needs to be in the 10 pm slot but the cast was great and the visuals were stunning. Could back off on the human eating thing, but it was good and Eddie Izzard is perfect.
    Loved Portia de Rossi also

What a different take on the show! Unlike the first version, here Grandpa is a serial killer, we see gaping open chest wounds where hearts have been removed, Marilyn is not sweetly oblivious but instead urges the guest, "Run! Run!" And all that is supposed to be balanced by a sappy father/son talk about being true to yourself. Well, the light moralizing does not balance the gore and evil. NOT a family show. No thank you.

I was a fan of the original and also of its counterpart – The Addams Family. Back then, the shows were clever, good natured, always funny and sometimes heartwarming, especially The Munsters. This remake was too dark and disturbing and quite a departure from the original. I set the DVR in anticipation of enjoying this and unfortunately, both my husband and I were really disappointed. I don't know who really wants to see animals and children getting attacked and eaten or an old man sucking the blood out of a man he's just murdered through a long clear catheter after he's just cut his heart out. Why would they think this was funny or entertaining? Well, it wasn't. There was not one likeable character in this whole episode. Not one. And, we were big fans of Eddie Izzard, Portia and Jerry. In this, nothing worked. The network heads were right in shelving this. I do not wish to see more.

I think they wasted a ridiculous amount of money on this, unnecessarily

I live in the uk and have been following the making of this series since it was first announced. The pilot was fantastic tv and has every making for a good show. But it's a shame NBC won't be making anymore. Someone give mr singer and fuller a chance to show us what they had planned. But one thing keep the cast. They all had such good on screen chemistry.

I thought it was incredibly funny and charming (in a dark way). I loved Pushing Daisies when it was on, and Mockingbird Lane definitely had a similar brand of humor and style. I hope NBC picks it up!!

I loved this show a lot. I really loved the new take on all the Munster charaters and of course Grandpa stole the show. My one slight quibble was that with the exception of the scoutmaster, the non Munsters were a little one dimensional. If the show is picked up (and I hope it is) I would like them to keep the adult themes and let the "normal" people be more developed.

I was a little unsure at first when the program started, It didn't take long to get into it. Yes, it is not the original Munster's, but for a modern day edge and twist it really has some thing going for it. I would love to see it go further on and watch it develop. There is something about this group of actors, director and producers that clicks rather well and should be allowed to continue. I am all for many more episodes.

This pilot was well made and kept the spirit of the old show with some great 21st Century changes. Eddie Izzard was a hoot and Jerry O'Connell did his best acting in years! I think the 'Once Upon A Time" type of audience would love this, and it's not like NBC has too many hot shows to not have room. Animal Practice is gone- just get rid of Men With Kids or Whitney and there's your time slot!

LOVED IT! I have a brother in my house with special needs and he is a bit of a savant in certain subjects and the Munsters are one of them(dont ask lol). He enjoyed it said the house was better than the original house. I enjoyed the first time you see Herman it looks like he has Gwynnes square head and bolts but its a birdhouse or something behind him. Also the exchange between Eddie and Marilyn in which the "deer was depressed" but "it didnt look depressed i could swear it smiled" had me ROLLING! something about us aprents when we lie to kids and its obvious even we dont believe the lie lol. Anyway...loved it, hope it gets picked up. Maybe i only like it cuz it makes my family seem more normal BBBWWWAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHa

Loved the old 60s show; however, not sure enough was borrowed from it to warrant calling Mockingbird a "remake". The theme and basis of the humor was also uncertain. I would like to have seen an updated version of the Universal Studios look of vampires and Frankenstein. Perhaps they all could have been like the new Grandpa....hiding their true images from "normal" people and reverting back whenever they come home.

It was horrible. No discernible level of comedy, dark or otherwise. Dry dialogue and dryer performances. Ridiculous and nonsensical plot. It does not hold a candle to the original series. The only great thing about it is the beautiful set design.

Well, for one, pilots are never great. However this is clearly a dry dark comedy and I think it's smart to not copy the original show lest there by viewers who nitpick every scene for accuracy. Your not liking it doesn't make it a horrible show.

I thought it was a little hit and miss but like a lot of pilots, it takes time for the story to build and by the end of it I decided it was pretty good and would like to see it continue. it struck me as it really should be on HBO showtime etc type of show. it's a little to bizarre for a network show and networks rarely take chances on something like this. but they should let people watch what was filmed and see how the ratings go at least. but, like most great shows, they cancel them early. deadwood, dead like me, rome, all cancelled too early. also, not that wild about the guy they got to play herman or his character in this version for that matter

I enjoyed the show! I myself was a fan of Pushing Daises! I would just stick some bolts in Herman's neck and make the Munster family distinctly different then Marilyn – They all looked like humans to me!!! I was happy when I read online that NBC was remaking the show and I was ready to watch it! I was not disappointed! NBC needs to give this show a chance! This show is exaclty what NBC needs to go head-to-head with ABC (Once Upon a Time) on Sunday Nights!!

I thought Mason Cook fit the part of a more modern Eddie quite well, and pulled it off without all the wardrobe and makeup poor Butch Patrick had to deal with.

I doubt they could have done better than Eddie Izzard to portray Grandpa. It's going to be hard to beat Al Lewis in that role.

As for the rest, I see some real potential for it, and though it may never be as endearing as the original (remakes seldom are) it did make me laugh and you can bet I am waiting to see what happens next.

Well, like most everyone here, I skipped over everything you said. Therefore, nothing you said mattered. Keep your idiotic rants to yourself and let the rest of us live in peace.
