See Kidman as Grace Kelly, Saldana as Nina Simone

After patiently waiting to get a peek of Nicole Kidman as Grace Kelly in Olivier Dahan’s “Grace of Monaco,” critics weren't disappointed by the actress' transformation.

Kidman wore her strawberry blonde locks in a polished updo, and covered her shoulder with a fur shawl while filming the biography in St. Barts, France, earlier this week.

“The ensemble made her a dead ringer for a look that Kelly sported during the early ’60s,” the New York Daily News wrote.

Meanwhile, Us Weekly called the the actress' look “one of her most stunning recreations yet.”

Across the pond, Zoe Saldana was channeling another cultural icon, Nina Simone.

She’s playing the late jazz musician in Cynthia Mort’s “Nina,” which is currently filming in Los Angeles.

When the news that Saldana was up for the role broke in August, some commenters were unsure if she could pull it off.

Well, what do you think? Are you buying Kidman and Saldana as Kelly and Simone, respectively?

“Grace of Monaco" is expected to bow in 2014 and "Nina" is due out in 2013.

i like zoe zaldana i really hope this nina movie will bring out her acting skills because so far in all of her movies her looks were the biggest focus not her acting...i am trying to be positive but really Zoe for Nina? i can't picture it. i will have to see this movie about my favorite singer.

The thing about Grace Kelly was that she was a chubby woman, and every part of her had a bit of baby fat, including her face. When she wore all those Dior gowns in the early 50's, she must have been miserable from dieting. Older actresses with her body type include Deborah Kerr, Ginger Rogers, maybe Marilyn. But Nicole Kidman? Yes, the ladylike personality and the translucent skin and blonde hair, but that's about it, because she is just too angular, and the personality of a woman with a bit of heft is different because she moving slower than the rather frenetic Nicole, who burns off her calories fast.

However, acting is about make believe, so I could be pleasantly surprised at the likeness.

"I really think Jessica Simpson or Katy Perry should have got the Nina Simone part." – Jessica

I had to do a double take at that statement...good one Jessica, had me rolling around in violent fits of laughter.

After ruining Virginia Woolf in the "Hours", someone is trusting Nicole with another Biographical?Doesn't anyone in Hollywood learn their lessons?

Whatever you do, people will always have something to critique about. First, Nicole is no Grace Kelly. She doesn't look like her. Young actresses would have been a better fit than her, blah blah blah... Now, Zoe Saldana, an up and coming young actress playing an iconic character, people are still critiquing that she is not fit to play Nina Simone. Sometimes, it makes you think that these people are just criticizing for the sake of criticizing.

If you agree with the logic of using Katy Perry to play Nina Simone, then why not have Jennifer Hudson play Grace Kelly?
Are you in favor of that?

I agree with the other post. They should have went with Katy Perry as Nina Simone. Or if they wanted to go the ethnic route maybe use Paula Abdul.

Agreed. Why do they always have to choose black people to play African Americans? I think it's discriminatory.

    • huh?

Is this sarcasm? I could only hope so. Why do they pick blacks to portray African Americans?

This could be the dumbest thing I have heard all day. Nina Simone was an African American, jazz/blues singer and civil rights activists. Having a blond blue eyed "all-american" Jessica Simpson (as someone else suggested) or even Katy Perry with her strong European looks play the role of Nina Simone would be an insult.

Why not just have Will Smith play George Washington. There's equality and then there's stupidity.

I agree. They should have chose Katy Perry to be Nina Simone. Katy can sing.

I really think Jessica Simpson or Katy Perry should have got the Nina Simone part. They are far better singers and would appeal to a broader audience that J Hudson. Katy Perry has the looks and is super popular these days. With her in the role the movie would have made millions. With Hudson it will only be shown on midtown black theaters.

To Jessica"nobody knows"lots of people know who this Zoe girl is,she's a beautiful and talented actress. Why do you have to. Start controversy where there is none?I'm a five foot five 100 pound black chick and I went as Rhett Butler to A pre-Halloween party today at work and my best friend Cory a six foot three 240 pound white guy was Scarlet O'hara,no one got upset in fact everyone thought we were hilarious we even won a prize. So people just chill.

People have lost it. Jessica cannot sing. Katy Perry cannot sing. Nina Simone was a true artist. Those people you mentioned have the benefit of electronic equipment to help them sound somewhat OK. Have you heard Katy Perry Live, truely horrible. Nina Simone – brown compliction. Katy and Jessica – very fair complicted. Why would you even think they could play this role. You have to have soul to portray a great jazz artist. They got PoP, but no soul.

    • wow...

@ Jessica – I'm sure NO ONE has ever heard of Zoe Saldana. She was only in one of the top grossing films in 2010 (Avatar). She's been in Pirates of the Caribbean, Star Trek, Columbiana...i could go on and on.

Oh but wait...Jessica Simpson did do a bang up job playing Daisy Duke in the Dukes of Hazard bomb. Yeah, she should definitely have been considered.

You should really think BEFORE speaking in the future.

I don't see either of them for these roles. Grace Kelly was small and not as stick like as Nicole. Jennifer Hudson would have been better than Zoe.
