The one thing "inevitable" about Chanel No. 5's ad campaign starring Brad Pitt was the reaction.
The Internet has been enthralled with the 30-second clip starring the actor since the brand rolled out its campaign on Monday, with responses varying from "uncomfortable" to "smoldering" to "nonsensical."
"It's not a journey. Every journey ends, but we go on," Pitt muses in the commercial. "The world turns, and we turn with it. Plans disappear, dreams take over. But wherever I go, there you are. My look luck. My fate. My fortune. Chanel No. 5. Inevitable."
It's the first time Chanel's opted to use a man to talk about a woman's fragrance, but for the company it was a necessary switch. The president of Chanel Fragrance and Beauty, Andrea d’Avack, told Women's Wear Daily that "to keep a legend fresh, you always have to change its point of view. ... We think very much that the perfume is a seduction between a man, a woman and the perfume."
To that end, the commercial - which was filmed by "Anna Karenina" director Joe Wright - is supposed to make you think Pitt's talking to a woman before you realize he's talking about the 91-year-old scent. (Is anyone else curious if Pitt uses that voice on Angelina, too?)
According to WWD, Pitt's thought to have pulled in $7 million for his work.
great cologne. thanks!
One more spoof!
I think Brad looks amazing...and he still has that wonderful head of hair!! I think any man would want to buy Chanel after seeing him. And please...He has a family now so his past is so forgotten. Divorce is the popular thing here in the USA anyway, even if you are not a huge star.
hahahahahahaah he looks like a druggie washed up porn actor....soo bad and sooo not Chanel,
This commercial does exactly what it is suppose to do...it get's our attention; even if it's weird...they accomplished what they wanted with using Brad...they got our attn.(well, mine anyway).. ;)
I saw his commercial for Chanel No 5 the other night...it makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. It certainly doesn't make me want to go buy the perfume, if anything...it turns me off of it. When it comes to men for this commercial someone CLEAN CUT and elegant looking is more suitable...Pitt looks like crap these days.
good example of honesty....mitt romney,ty goodnight
the man is rich period...oh yea and ur not so thats why u hate, and no possibly not the best honesty but then ppl are sheep anyway so buy it and shut up lol
How can a man, who always looks in need of a bath, promote such a classic fragrance?
I wear Chanel, but I think Brad looks dirty and this ad would not convince my husband to buy it for me. I really don't believe the original Ms. Chanel would approve at all, she was such a clean and neat women, No she would not approve of Brad. It really stinks. Roz
This commercial does not represent the perfume....it is a fantasy...and this actor doesn't make it..I love this perfume..but this commercial is an absolute mess..I no longer buy CHanel...you have spoiled the best perfume ever made..
Odd ad brad pitt look scary in ad
Actors are professional liers..I didnt realize so many people actually know him personally to call him a good man. movie stars show us what they want us to see..and if they are doing something good in the eyes of the public its to cover up the bad we dont see
his commercial sucks..................period!
Brad is a good father and a good man. Chanel should be complimented on their choice of
How do you know he's a good father and good man...because he's famous or do you you spend time with him personally?
All the judgmental, angry envy here is remarkable. I hope you all feel better about yourselves now. At least for a couple of minutes.
STOP HATIN YA R JUST A BUNCH OF HATERS!! BRAD IS DA MAN YEAH !! SO KISS THAT WHERE THE SUN DNT SHINE!!
Now in English, please. Without the screaming, if you would.
I like Brad but his writers and ad people must have been out of the country when doing this ad.
Chanel 5 is nice – but this ad is PU.
Ad attempts to be deep and insightful. Only achieves silly, though. I've loved and worn Chanel fragrances for 30 years, but this ad would not motivate me to buy it at all.
I do hope this money goes to charity, Bratt
Ewwww...Brad Pitt is so gross. He is ridiculous in this ad. I do not understand what people find attractive about him.
Brad doin' smell ads! Celebs do whatever..I want to know if he's still helping the Katrina people? He was doing an Awesome job with that!!
He should have done it in iambic pentameter.
Love it! I wouldn't be surprised if brad and angelina place humorous bets on one another. Remember how she thrust her leg out at the academy awards?? And noe brsd is doing a smoldeting perfume commetcial? No way! This is s so out of character for brad and that's what makes it great!
I can honestly say I'd rather watch a campaign ad than this dribble.
It's so campy...like an SNL sketch....Chanel, please....what were you thinking?
LIFE GOES ON...BUT LOVE IN THE HEART NEVER LEAVES......LOVE NEVER DIES...IT IS STRONGER THAN DEATH!
Where's the outrage? A narcissist Brad Pitt is paid $7 million for half a day of work. Makes the Wall Street One Percenters look pretty mild by comparison, doesn't it? Where's the outrage?
no outrage here...he's heavily involved in charities.
Yes, Mr. Pitt is one of the few decent decadently rich people out there that gives back and tries to help others less fortunate.
Good point, Robin. Of course Pitt is charitable, but I am sure many of the businessmen/women on whom people have waged war are equally as charitable.
Brad was great in Moneyball, Jesse James, Bejamin Button, Babel all movies made after his split from the boring one....yes, fatherhood has made him more appealing and congratulations to Angie and the ring he designed for her is indeed gorgeous....
He was the worst part of every movie you've named. I actually feel bad for the editors.
Brad Pitt ruined it for me, big time! Gosh dang it...cause j'adore Chanel! I'm sorry....I just don't understand the fascination with this guy. I'm not saying that he's bad looking...but hot...or even, hottest man alive? Really?? Seriously girls???
That's not Brad, that's his brother Stu. Brad wouldn't sell his soul for Chanel.
Great actor hamming it up, can't win 'em all I guess.
Personally, I've never understood the fascination with this guy (either before, during or after ANY of his girlfriends/wives).
So glad I wear White Diamonds by Elizabeth Taylor.
oh so you prefer to smell like an old lady
Not sure he's the first man to talk about Chanel...I seem to remember great commercials for Chanel being voiced by John Huston...fabulous voice.
We need to LUVE Marvin Berman of Quiet Mind Foundation for his efforts to save the World.
Why does the media keep calling this ad "odd"? I think it's romantic and great. Why do people think there's something odd about being romantic?
Wow"" Fanning myself. I have never tried the fragrance but after that commercial I am sold. He is so hot!!!!
It's odd because he's not convincing at all – we don't know who he's talking to and his long scruffy hair is hardly romantic! Enough said! This is a real mis-step for Brad – everyone on this project could have done much better than this. Because he doesn't come off engaging enough I don't even attach Chanel to this ad....................needs to be re-done.
brad is in a wonderful relationship, doens't have problems with angelina and they have great kids.
he looks amazing for 50 year old and he's not nasty person
Brad Pitt can dress in anyhing and look good! Tis was a geat endorsement for Chanel!!!!
Endorsement?? For $7 M he'll endorse Queen Elizabeth as the most beautiful woman on earth.
love brad...i have total respect-
he is a serious man and is not controlled by anything.
He looks like he is a heartbeat away from busting out laughing. If he did, then I'd buy the perfume. :)
he doesn't pull his pants down for everyone anymore...he's a good man
Agree that he looks ready to laugh.....the script is soooo pretentious it's hysterical.
i'm glad brad picked #2....#1 was a f-cking bitc@
is because of her...not because of me...understand?
thank you putz.
get a hobby...
you were here and now your not
computer room thanks you also
This commercial makes no since but he is very seducing so that's all that matters. ;)
did u call?
is the only woman he has never cheated on...that is what he said..who knows for sure.
he's 50, he's finally found the right woman...good for him
Brad stilll has the cajones....I credit Angelina for making him into a sensitive, sweet man and as a father, it makes him more desirable, especially his beautiful children....fatherhood brings out the best in any man.
A STINK selling Celebrity named PITT – seems right.
that was his choice....i'm divorced...i made the choice to leave my wife we both met other people...life went on.
FACT: WITH THOSE LOVE WORDS....I CAN ONLY THINK OF ONE WOMEN WHO WORE HIS RING.....
THis little sissy boy wmelling like a women wouldnt last three seconds in the wilderness.
He's nothing but a sissy.A sissy,Y'hear?!?!?!?
yep, without his clothes on Brad looks like a real sissy..jealous, much?
smells like monkey poop to me.
he looks better with short hair–
did swell job on this project..yes he did.
Nolan, the next time you're correcting someone's spelling, you may want to spell "ad" correctly
The man alwasy looks like he needs a good scrubbin! Perfume cannot cover that stank.
Lighten up ye angry, nasty trolls!!
Brad Pitt did a great job with this commercial. It made me laugh.
What a waste of money.......7 million is really low.....10 million would have been better.....
He can't act, never could. Oh, and the hair, didn't we see that style in the 80's.
I hate longer hair on men. Is he trying to be Fabio or something? I had a so-so friend with that hairdo, and he would comb it and pull it back into a ponytail. He looked ridiculous.
I could write better copy for Chanel 5 and I'm not working for a high price agency. Sounds like the creator was on LSD, which was the look Brad is sporting when that was a popular drug of choice. I don't know how he said those words without laughing. PLUS – – Chanel products have been classy, classic and elegant. And for their signature fragrance they hire a scuzzy looking Brad Pitt? A cool looking man off the street in a black tux with a martini is more in line with the image of Chanel 5 perfume. Coco must be whirling around and around. Apologies to her.
I agree Liz. Brad looks homeless. Tuck your shirt in, young man! This ad does not sell Chanel No. 5.
Handsome man, great actor, original commercial....? Pitt is the most self-promoting, intellectually and socially pretentious being (along side his lifetime partner, Angelina, that is) that has been placed in our media since world wide wrestling.
Commercials with singular persons, a black and white backdrop, brooding and looking away from the camera, mumbling some lofty lines has been done since the 60's.
N.B. Oh, and this is handsome? Maybe he's going for the artsy look but instead got the bumsrush.
Blessings to all those of us who work for a living....
It isn't the only commercial that sounds a bit Off...forget 'who' is saying them is the reason there is such a fuss...listen to most ads and they sound similar...nonsensical. Make a bigger fuss over him, god knows why, because he Is Brad Pitt.
Yes, he is a good actor...but is sometimes put down as is wifey...now if it were Pierce Brosnan Doing the Same commercial I doubt we would be seeing such a todo about it...
Brad is most likely laughing during the entire shoot at the ridiculousness of this ad. However, it works because Brad can totally pull off that smirky grin that makes the watcher feel he/she is in on the gag with Brad. The guy could sell anything to anyone because simply put, he is Brad Pitt and there simply is no one cooler on the planet than him.
Brad is such a naught boy to get so many women spun up with just a casual glimpse at a camera that makes us feel he is peering into our very souls. Damn you, Brad. One look at Brad fires my neurotransmitters so rapidly I nearly fall off my bed with the remote dangling over my head. Where are my smelling salts? Where's that damn robe? Where's my lipstick?
I actually love the commercial. it hit the right notes with me, but i agree with whomever said they should have had brad in a tux...like meet joe black!! perhaps there was more meaning in what he said because he was looking like a regular guy!!!
Totally agree with J.R. Holbrook. A tuxedo would have made it/made him more believable. Remember Brad Pitt as Joe Black...now that look would sell Channel # 5
He is so handsome! I don't buy Chanel because of the chemicals in their fragrance, but he is soooooo handsome!
Smokin' hot! Love him.
on a hacker
have the full story now...and we still not be watching...careful
When I realized that this was a real Chanel commercial I just felt sad for Brad Pitt. Pretentious and contrived. Too bad.
Chanel, pleeeease don't let us watch this commercial again, Pitt looks old, scruffy, not sincere, terrible acting. He looks like a hopeless homeless man, should have cleaned him up, Sorry Chanel, you lost 7 million dollars
The man is beautiful. I'd buy the perfume! Chanel knew exactly what they were doing...
Bold hypocrisy from someone who criticized commercialism and people who buy things they don't need.
He's saying "my luck" not "my look" as the article says.
Worst stupid commerical I've ever scene. Whoever wrote it should be fired. This ad would make me NOT want to buy Channel. You get Brad to be your spokes person and this is the best you can do for him.... give him this tripe to say?
You claim the add is the stupid... but you can't even spell "seen" .... you put "scene"... lol you are not on stage and you are not in front of a camera.
Agree. Never have been a huge Pitt fan, but this commercial ALMOST makes me feel sorry for him . . . so much money changed hands, though, that he clearly chose to think the script was esoteric rather than just plain lame.
Agree also. Though someone of Brad's stature would never agree to say something unless he was OK with it. So not only does he have to take some responsibility for the lousy script but also for his lousy acting. Agee with others that they should have insisted on a more formal attire than that casual outfit he's wearing especially for a iconic brand like Chanel. And based on what I've read over the net and viewed on tv the overwelming response about this commercial has been very negative and he's become a butt of jokes. Wonder how long it will take for Channel to pull this ad? 10, 9, 8, 7, 6...
I think there are men that would have been for this commericial.Brad Pitt always looks in need of a shower and shampoo but then again Chanel might be good in covering up the smell.
Brad Pitt is a great choice but he should have been dressed in a tuxedo! Super handsome man!
