If the latest “American Horror Story” preview is any clue, its new season should be killer.
The first five minutes of Wednesday’s season premiere were recently released online, and it looks like the FX drama’s second installment, set in an asylum for the criminally insane, is full of killers, nymphomaniacs, psychopaths and Zachary Quinto in a skinny tie.
The story takes place in the present, following a married couple (Maroon 5’s Adam Levine and Jenna Dewan-Tatum) on their “haunted honeymoon tour.” Their last stop turns out to be Briarcliff Manor, but 40 years before.
The time-jump is only one of the mind-bending things in store.
“American Horror Story: Asylum” takes many of the supporting cast members from the first season and gives them new roles. “Everybody will be playing the opposite of what they played,” co-creator Ryan Murphy told TVLine.
Jessica Lange plays Sister Jude, the nun who runs Briarcliff in 1964. The staff of doctors and nuns who work with her include James Cromwell and Lily Rabe. Meanwhile, Quinto plays a psychiatrist, and Evan Peters, last season’s bad boy, will play this season’s hero. (One of the asylum’s most notorious residents is called “Bloody Face" - he wears a nightie.)
There are plenty of changes for "American Horror Story" with “Asylum” - except its tone, it seems. If the first five minutes of the premiere are any indication, it should bounce wildly between erotica, melodrama, dark comedy and skin-shredding violence.
Murphy has hinted at larger social themes, since many of the asylum’s residents have been committed for being “abnormal,” be it too gay or too lustful.
He’s also teased a marathon session of big moments: the asylum’s head doctor’s (Cromwell) hands are dirty from some (probably illegal) patient experiments; Sister Jude is battling a closet of past demons and present sexual fantasies; and Peters’ Kit is accused of killing his girlfriend, even though he claims she was abducted by aliens.
Many behind and in front of the camera have called “Asylum” the craziest, scariest and sexiest thing they’ve seen … ever.
