Celebs defend Big Bird

Among the topics covered during Wednesday's presidential debate were taxes, the deficit ... and Big Bird, who's quickly becoming a contentious sticking point in the run-up to the election.

The "Sesame Street" character is beloved not just by generations who've grown up with the tall yellow bird, but also by Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney.

As he assured the country Wednesday, he loves the childhood favorite - but that doesn't mean he's against cutting funding for PBS.

This isn't the first time Romney's taken a stance on "Sesame Street," as he said last December that he wasn't "going to kill Big Bird ... But Big Bird is going to have advertisements."

Yet his statement on Wednesday immediately ricocheted across the Web, launching parody Twitter accounts and causing celebs to stand up in solidarity with their fellow entertainer.

The Roots' Questlove warned, "yo son. RUN! @big_bird," while actress Olivia Wilde posted, "Mitt is smirky, sweaty, indignant and smug with an unsettling hint of hysteria. And he wants to kill BIG BIRD."

Wil Wheaton cracked, "Pop quiz, Mitt: Coal and Big Bird are in two speeding trains in opposite directions. Who do you choose?! WHO DO YOU CHOOSE?!" as Jaleel White predicted backlash: "If Americans were pissed #NBC cancelled Law&Order, wait til Money Mitt cancels Big Bird @PBS O_o Anarchy!!!"

Brit actor Simon Pegg was lost, Wednesday night, "I wake up and the first tweet I read says Mitt Romney wants to kill Big Bird. What's happening to the world?!!"

Although @FiredBigBird and @BigBirdRomney are among the Twitter accounts that have been speaking on the character's behalf, according to "Sesame Street," Big Bird missed the whole thing.

"Big Bird: My bed time is usually 7:45, but I was really tired yesterday and fell asleep at 7!" the PBS show posted to their account Thursday. "Did I miss anything last night?"

It's not an attack on PBS. In times of economic crises, it's a matter of priorities. PBS is strong and can cover it's own costs. It will survive, will we? La La land says we can afford everything, as long as China keeps loaning us money. Reality dictates that you have to pay that loan back. So tough choices will have to be made to afford the payback. PBS is a minor player in the tough choices yet to come. We will ALL have to tighten our belts to attack this deficit. Nobody is going to be happy but there it is.

There is not one American under the age of 60, who had not benefited from the programming on PBS. Whether being Sesame Street or Mister Rogers, whether for yourself or the child you were babysitting, PBS has been a staple in all the lives in America. Anytime you want to consider cutting funds for something, you look at the benefits provided by that service, and PBS has done more good than the "War On Drugs!" This programming is money well spent. Romney biggest problem with PBS is that is the oldest running programming that promotes multi-cultural interaction. Judging from the Republican convention...that is clear. Yet Romney, even with all his money, has attacked the wrong establishment this time. This attack will be his undoing, and all reading this must agree....NO ONE screws with ELMO!!!! So all you American voters, keep Elmo in your mind as you go to the polls. Remember the laughter and wholesome fun brought to you by Sesame Street. Only a very evil man would want to destroy that.

Hollywood stars need their drugs and the protection from prosecution. They can only get this from Democrats. US Drug Gangs are kept happy by Democrats who don't believe in law and order and let the inner city killings continue. The Blacks in the inner city haven't figured out that it is the Democrats who are making the drug gangs strong! This isn't about Big Bird. This about Liberal Democrats promoting drugs and drug gangs to support the Hollywood Trash. Obama would rather appear on The View than meet with a world leader. Yes, Obama is Hollywood Trash supporting illegal drugs. Obama is the guy responsible for the murders in the inner city because Cartel Drugs have an approved path over our open borders.

My God! All this hysteria over a TV show. I am no fan of Mitt Romney but it's pretty obvious he is not trying to kill Big Bird. He just suggested he would cut the funding for a television station and spend it someplace else, maybe towards defending our country. Would you rather have it be the other way around? President Obama already said he would be in favor of cutting the military budget. Maybe he can take money away from our military and instead give PBS a bigger budget. Would that be better? Anyway, PBS and Big Bird are not going away. They make plenty of money already without the goverment's pitch in. Maybe all these celebrities who are calling for Mitt Romney's head will be willing to throw in a few thousand bucks each to keep Big Bird on our TV for years to come.

Sesame Street is still more than 40 years. if PBS will more cut budget to Sesame Street before if PBS will more nutrition program, health education, fitness education or physical education. environmental, more school program. if PBS II and PBS III will channels will replace to Channel 9 WWOR and Channel 11 WPIX in NYC. I will see WWOR is former UPN will out of business and WPIX is current CW might more bankruptcy and out of business soon or near future. It is non cable TV will bad economy and very less entertainment primetime TV in ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox.

  16. TV dumbs the mind

At what point do we put a television show ahead of our counrty. PBS should not be a tool for teaching our young. We as parents have that responsablilty. It you have a child take the time to sit and teach. Big bird and his freinds wont make your child smater by teaching them the number 4 and the letter H for a half hour. Step up and be the leading role in your young childs education. The government should allow buisnesses to take care of themselves. Not waste tax dollars so you can sit your child infront of a T.V. and forget they are there.

    Its time paretns take responsability

    October 8, 2012 at 4:06 am | Report abuse |
    • Seriously?

If you are going to criticize parents for letting their children watch TV and avoiding responsibility, for the love of Snuffy, don't incorrectly spell responsibility twice. I let my two year old watch very little TV and what he does watch is PBS, Sprout (direcTV's PBS kids channel) or Jeopardy! and this is usually when my wife or myself are cooking dinner for the whole family. He loves the shows, it is absolutely educational and helping him learn, and I actually think sesame street is entertaining for adults (the 30 rocks skit is great). I grew up on sesame street and I agree it is not a replacement for parenting, but to cut funding for PBS while the military budget bloats and Mitt can donate millions to the church of LDS and they don't pay a cent in taxes... that's just wrong.

      October 8, 2012 at 5:16 am | Report abuse |
    • TV dumbs the mind

I will give credit the PBS and Sprout are more educational than say nick or disney. But to say the government needs to fund a program that has to borrow money from china because you dont want your children missing out on Big Bird is wrong. I have faith that even if funding was cut the station wont go anywear it'll just have to fend for itself. I also have a two year old son. And when his mother or I are cooking we involve him in everything we do. He helps get food from our fridge or pull pots and pans from the bottom counters. He like to sit and smell the food. And if he can't be in the room he perfers to color, or participate in learning skills from a book. So just because you grew up on somthing doesn't mean Mitt is wrong for wanting to cut finding. Every little bit counts when your trillions of dollars in debt. Whats the old phrase...oh yeah every penny counts. And to argue the military budget our soilders fight for our freedom. And if you look at a recruits pay and how many hours they put in a week for our freedom you would see they don't even make minimum wage. What our country needs its to stop depending on the government to take care of buisness and worry more about our saftey. I believe the American people have the real power to fix out economy. So let PBS fund itslef. If your so worried about Seasame Street why don't you donate your own money like Mitt had done for a church. What we do with our own success is our own buisness.

Fer Pete's Sake! People, Romney isn't trying to kill Big Bird, he's trying to save some money and he's looking for ways to do so. PBS will just need to get out there and hustle a little harder to make ends me (just like the rest of society). You can't get blood from a stone forever, gang.

I agree with you Naomi: Romney gave an example of a program from which he would cut funding. Isn't that what his critics have been asking him to do-give specifics? Now that he provided an example, people's (including the president's) responses seem to focus irrationally on what this will do to big bird. The people who have these over emotional responses about big bird have missed the chance to have a productive conversation about what programs should be cut to save the government money. I am disappointed that the president and the general public don't take on this opportunity to continue a conversation about how to create a fiscally sound country in a rational and honest manner.

Kill Big Bird? Bring the boys home. Close all those bases in foreign lands we don`t need. Stop helping all those countries that are our enemies or are not our friends. Cut defense budgets by 50%. Stop spending abuses, lobbyists, tax loopholes. Start taxing companies that send jobs overseas and give tax credits to companies that create jobs. Do that and you don`t have to cut anything. Cut the crap and get to work, Congress. The American voters are paying you very well for the little you accomplish.

99% of the posts below support a philosophy of Government support of social programs that should be supported by "for profit" organizations. If we continue in the direction we are heading, we will end up in the same boat with Greece and other Euro nations who reject austerity measures. Someone needs to put their foot down and stop government spending, period., no matter who it hurts! The US WILL fail if spending continues! We in the US think we are so failure proof.

This really shows how ignorant Romney is.

PBS has done more for the US as far as education, teaching the English language, and general goodwill towards America, than any other effort, whether military or diplomatic that we have made in the world.

It is this kind of ignorance that is really scary from our far-right friends. They don't take the time to reflect on anything and only see things in terms of $$$$, but miss the sense – as in common sense.

Mitt is plain mean. Republicans are mean, angry, hateful people who support war to prop up the economy and death to save on medical spending. That's the truth. They care more about a fetus than they do a living person. What amazes me is that a lot of people are dumber than a box of rocks and buy what republicans are selling. These people are probably very racist and just hate the fact we have a black president. Penguins are black and white, just like Obama. Republicans probably consider penguins black and hate them too.

I cannot believe that because Romney needs to lower the deficit and he mentioned cutting out PBS funding, that is what most people are talking about. Hey, People. This country is in a "mess" and you are more worried about a Fake Bird that has our children thinking that education should be entertainment. Therefore, when children go to school they think teachers should entertain them, not make them do work. I also saw that because Republicans want to possibly get rid of the Big Yellow Bird, they are racists because black and white penguins would be next. Absolutely no one can disagree with the POTUS without being called a racist. That is a word that has lost it power and impact. It is now so overused that it really diminishes true racism. Celebs defend Big Bird because an actor might lose his job if it is eliminated. When are we going to start remembering that an actor is just that. Someone who reads the words of others and might look good. But for goodness sakes they shouldn't influence any thing as important as an election.

@Pattianne The education boost from SESAME STREET received by inner city children is unmeasurable.

Of course, the GOP cares not a whit for children or their educations. It would appear that you don't value children and learning, either. Claiming the importance of children while cutting programs that bolster them is not.. Their only concern for children is when they are in the womb. After they're born, education, food and health care are no concern of theirs. Look at the cuts they've made to WIC, SS, Welfare and education.

      Hypocrisy in action.

Republicans don't care about children once they're born. All they care about is the fetus. Once it's a child and has actual needs which costs money in the form of tax dollars, they're out.

Look at their behaviour and their actions: they cut WIC, which is nutritional support to women, infants and children, they cut Welfare and they cut Planned Parenthood which is the only way some women get health care. Don't get me started on their interference with women's Choice. They want kids to be born but that's it. How sad, too bad, you're stuck with the kid, lady. They'll also revile you for having a child alone. I've seen the name-calling. The double standard is still alive and well with Republicans. Hypocrites, all.

It is not that our country cannot afford PBS and similar programs. It is just a matter of deciding what we are willing to pay for. The GOP have decided that they are unwilling to pay for this because they say it's "big government". If paying for something means raising taxes, they are against it. The problem is that they are being penny wise but pound foolish. In their ideology, it's okay to ignore inconvenient facts that show that education programs pay for themselves in higher taxes and lower costs for social services.

On the one hand you complain because govt subsidized or public orgs are incompetently run and in efficient. but your other hands says I dont want to pay the going rate for someone to lead those organizations who is capable of making them run efficiently and competent. you cant have it both ways. Govt orgs are incompetent (if they are) because no one in their right mind would want to leave one when you could make much higher salaries in the private sector.

If Mitt Romney gets elected, is he going to donate his presidential salary like Hoover did? Heck, why don't all of the representatives consider to do the same? What would the dollar amout be per year? For instance, there are approx. 535 members in congress, 100 members in the senate. Let's say they make an average of $162K along with the $400K of the presidents salary, the donation amount could be $8,020,000/year. Not every one would be willing to donate their income, but if even half did it would be a step forward. The dolar amout may even save Big Bird. Also, they should consider or look at how to cut the waste, the country would be better off. For instance, quit sending out "Vote for Me" flyers. My recycle bin is overflowing. A positive is I am saving a tree through recycling.

Yes Romney is a business man and he knew exactly what he was doing when he overloaded KB Toys, Ampad and Global Grinding with debt, charged millions in fees then bankrupted those companies leaving the employees on the street. Next will be Staples since Bain Capitol has their sites on them even though Mitt claims to have built the company from scratch. From what I've seen of Private Equity firms, it's not about building a company as much as it's about running away with the proceeds and everything else.

PK, what universe are you living in? Stapes is one of the most successful companies around.

And as far as the other companies mentioned, maybe the employees who are "out on the street" have bumped into some ex-Solyndra employees. If you remember Solyndra got a half-billion dollars in taxpayer money before going bust and according to the terms of the bankruptcy the private investors, one of whom includes a major Obama donor, will get paid back before the taxpayers do. Kinda funny how that works out, huh?

alright listen up republi-chumps and tea-billies... kids might prefer spongebob or johnny test or some other show but guess what? those are on pay cable which not every family can afford, not to mention teach kids nothing! here's an idea cut about a billion dollars from our military spending and give a quarter to PBS and the rest to veterans affairs! PBS is more than just Sesame Street anyway, they show educational and culturally relevant shows for people of all ages. but i doubt anyone who agrees with Mitt understands anything about culture anyway.

Yes cut military spending .... give it to PBS so big bird can stay add free ... there is free tv all over the place it has advertisements ...military spending provides for some of the most innovative things (like the internet) and provides some of the best paying jobs for skilled workers to advance in their career. I know you are worried about people being able to watch big bird so they can be happy at mc donalds but when I was a kid I never watched any of that crap I went the hell out side ... then when at home I took stuff apart ... I'm successful without big bird ... so grow up.

It's a shame more people weren't outraged at that suggestion. As a child of the '70's I grew up with Sesame Street, The Electric Comiany and 3-2-1 Contact. They were educational and and even now I recall things I learned while watching them. I guess it's easier for parents to set children in front of shows like Spongebob Squarepants or (shudder) Here Comes Honey Boo Boo. It's just a shame.

last I checked it isn't the 1970's anymore. Children have far more choices now. No need to subsidize this when we are dead broke.

CW, you need to check further. Children at the lowest end of the spectrum do not have access to the many choices you're assuming they have. Kids with broadcast TV choices, i e, poor children, watch SESAME STREET regularly and they get an early start on school as a result.

Poor kids have few choices. Repeat until you understand it, CW. PBS helps them do better in school. SESAME STREET isn't the sole educational TV show, there are also reading programs that help kids. SS is just the flagship show. Mitt Romney is as out of touch with real America as you were before you were reminded here. Hopefully you care about this. Romney won't give a d@mn.

But at this point Sesame Street is a very rich neighborhood.
June 2011 – Sesame St is worth over 232 million dollars
June 2011 – PBS is worth over 291 million dollars

These are two separate non profit organizations. Neither of them federal taxes since they are non profit, and they still get government subsidies. Their financial statements are available.

I really don't like either canidate, but Romney has a very good and valid point. We are borrowing tons of money from China and other countries to sustain the budget. When you are in a position of borrowing money to pay your bills you need to cut everything you do not need. Paying for PBS while borrowing money is like a family taking out an interest loan to pay for cable tv. It makes no logical sense.

It makes me sad that Keith Urban has to deal with these two. They both need to shut up and do the job they are being over paid to do. You're just showing the whole country what kind of people you really are. Hang in there Keith – I'm really excited that you've signed on to do the show. I just hope both women don't ruin it.

If all the actors are so concerned, let them support Big Bird. I love PBS but let them get funding from private supporters or advcertising. Get out of my wallet. I support Mitt, he is on the right track.
