540-pound contestant wows 'X Factor' judgesAs Freddie Combs took the stage on Thursday’s episode of “The X Factor,” judges L.A. Reid and Simon Cowell appeared to lock eyes with each other. The 540-pound, wheelchair-bound minister from Greeneville, Tennessee, who said he almost died in 2009 when he weighed in at 920 pounds, dedicated his rendition of “Wind Beneath My Wings” to his wife of almost 16 years. “My comments for you will not be out of sympathy because of anything that you’ve dealt with, it’s going to be purely based on your voice, which I think is heavenly,” Reid told the contestant. After similar praise from judges Britney Spears and Demi Lovato, Cowell said, “When I heard you sing, I had a vision in my mind of you standing singing that song healthy happy and maybe you need some inspiration to help you to the next stage. It's within you to sort this out and I don’t think you deserve to be stuck in that chair.” Cowell then challenged Combs to stay healthy, saying, “I’ll back you if you back yourself.” After earning four yeses, and learning that he would be moving on in the singing competition, Combs told his wife, “I have a lot of work cut out for me when I get home. I’m going to stand and sing that song. And L.A. Reid is going to stand with me. How about that one.”

This is probably going to sound rude of me, but how on Earth does someone get that overweight in the first place? You'd have to spend your whole life just sitting around eating. I mean, I can respect that some people have genetic issues, and I know perfectly well that overeating is easy to do–I'm no lightweight myself–but how the heck can someone get THAT obese without deliberately trying to? It's one thing to be big, but to get to be over 900 pounds...that's just insane. How does that happen? Why do these people let it happen? I don't think this guy goes out and has a Big Mac every day for breakfast, but...wow.
It's ok, Jazz. It' a good question and I'll answer it before jerks descend upon you on high. I won't say it's complicated but I will say it takes a couple of factors. It is never JUST the amount of food they eat, let me get that out there.
1st, it is intake. Eating until you are stuffed encourages your stomach to get bigger. Best thing – stop before you're and drink a lot of water during the meal. 2nd – burning off the calories. I know I've gained 100 pounds since becoming a callcenter worker. Just sitting all day either in traffic, at work or right here typing. If you're not moving your body, you're not moving calories. Richard Simmons helped a woman morbidly obese lose weight by just encouraging her to clap along to the music in his show. She lost 65 pounds with that ALONE. then she found she could move a little easier and more of her her body. 3rd is what we're eating. there was a guy that dropped from 900 to 600 with the intervention of a doctor who was horrified to find his patient was nearly a ton.. and nearly starving. Garbage. The cheaper the food, the more fillers. Poor people appear fat because they are eating garbage (but I've tried a healthy diet – it's REAL expensive). 4 is the genetic angle. Whether it's hereditary or jacked up thyroid – sometimes eating less doesn't help. 5 – the final and most surprising step: Not eating enough. My effort to keep the weight off backfired about 8 years ago when I simply got by with very little food. Even on the weekends, I'm still content with a solid meal once a day. But this makes your body (especially if you're female) freak out and think "starvation mode!!" Men have it a bit easier – they slim down so they can become faster, quicker hunters. But women are expected to carry on the children. We store fat. The fat doesn't burn off. You can match your man calorie for calorie and not lose weight. Now if you (male or female) have a lot of American Indian or Asiatic blood in you, those races tended to bulk up on fat during the winter – so starving yourself triggers this.
He's got a way to go but as long as he sticks to 3 squares, small portions, exercise and water to clean out the system – he can knock this out out of the park with no lapband surgery. He has a very important tool: his wife.
People need to realize that obesity is an illness not a choice.

The fact that's he's lost almost 400 lbs in 3 years is extraordinary. The fact that America is in the grip of an obesity epidemic, I admire him for taking action to resolve his own issues. He's a potential role model to so many today...

I am reminded of Jim Nabors, as "Gomer Pyle" on The Andy Griffith Show. Jim Nabors has a great voice, but what made his performances on The Andy Griffith Show so special was the idea that such a lovely voice could come from such a backwards, stupid-looking slob who works on cars – it was this "angle" that made him seem particularly talented. Otherwise, he is just another guy with a great voice – they're everywhere, and most of them aren't stars because they don't have some "angle" to exploit that makes them stand out from the other great singers in the world who are otherwise just normal ordinary people in all other respects.
He will probably enjoy a measure of success. But, it will be more because he is a circus freak who can sing well, rather than because he can sing well. If he didn't weigh in at over 500 pounds, the reaction to his performance would have been very different. They would have still loved his voice, but the emotion behind their reaction would not have been so great. There are lots of people who can sing well. To be a star, you have to have something that makes you stand out from the other people who can sing well – his way of standing out is to be circus freak fat. If he loses a few hundred more pounds and starts looking like the average obese American slob, people will stop paying him any attention.
That being said, his voice is beautiful and I enjoyed his choice of song and was touched by the emotion behind it.

This guy is on the TLC show ton of love and treats his wife like garbage. He barks orders at her like shes his dog. He is very rude to his wife and is a very lazy man. look it up on youtube under "freddie combs ton of love" and see for yourself. His singing is about as good as his manners.
Here's the deal, MORON: When people consume too much food they become OBESE. When they get so fat they cannot get out of a wheelchair they cannot care for their personal hygiene. This is all a LIFESTYLE CHOICE. It is dirty. It is nasty. There is NOTHING good or inspirational about it. PERIOD.

You are beyond immature and cruel. Keep in mind that many people who are obese have deep medical or mental issues. And no, I am not fat. I am prior military and run 3.0 miles a day. I am a certified Command Fitness Instructor for the Navy. I have seen several individuals with medical issues preventing them to be able to pass their BCA. When I first came into the field I had a view that most were lazy until I worked with them and saw the effort that they put in. Some really can't drop the weight. It is sad that you would be so closed minded. You need to open your heart. And people are starving also due to a lack of compassion from others and you yourself fall into this category.

This is the same Freddie Combs who was on the TLC show "ton of love". If you watch the show you will see he is a very lazy person and treats his wife like total garbage and forces her to wait on him hand and foot. I understand that people can naturally have weight issues because of genetics but in his case its because hes lazy eats very unhealthy and he expects his wife to be his slave. I feel no sympathy for this man he is in the position hes in because of his own choices. Its great hes finally losing some weight but that doesn't excuse the way he treats his wife. If you don't believe me watch the TLC show. His voice is mediocre at best i have seen better at a fairground talent show. Clearly x factors attempt to boost some ratings.

Some people 'get like this' by eating normally. Some people absorb more carbohydrates during digestion than others, and convert them to fat. There are genes that cause some people to turn more carbohydrates into fat than others. There are also disorders that prevent people from feeling 'full', which can lead to overeating and obesity. They literally have no idea when to stop. These people benefit from 'lap belts' and other surgeries.
If you watch the TLC show as i have said you will clearly see that in his case its because he eats very unhealthy is lazy and barks orders at his wife like shes his dog. Genetic problem i think not.

Yes, food addictions are mental disorders. They are serious, and for some people, it does take being on your death bed to give you a wake up call. Does that make him a bad person? NO! Does it make you a bad person to judge? YES!
This story is only touching if this guy had some sort of medical disorder that made him obese.. If this isnt the case, and he is just another fat american who claims disability because of their McDonalds habit I would be very disappointed.. Being obese is not a disability in itself, we should not encourage this to be ok.
Its not ok for kids or adults to obese, it strains our medical system and has an extremely negative impact on our country (except the mcdonalds economy).

What a brave soul and he had a lovely voice, which could eventually be a magnificant voice with some training. I'm sure his weight affects his breathing, but if holds true to himself as he is doing, he'll continue to be a winner no matter what. Good for him!

I'm still not right but feeling much better...my trainer said i am a large framed women, 40 lbs is too much weight loss. 20 lbs is enough, once the 20 lbs comes off....he wants crunches..3 at a time at every visit...until i make it to 10 crunches....(he's nuts)!!!

i have a trainer in town that motivated me to jog again. he said your jogging done. i'm up to 20 min 3 times a week with stretching–as a younger woman i use to love work out. in my late 30's i was walking 2-3 miles but i was starting to decline
in working out.
the running is what surprised me i didn't think i could do it anymore....this man has to get help fast...he has to get on liquid
diet, then he has to start walking, then very light treadmill...he can do it...richard!!!!!

I think Freddie has a pretty great story, but I wasn’t a huge fan of his voice. Even though his voice wasn’t my favorite I’m still happy to see him go through to boot camp. All my officemates at DISH are excited to see his journey to get healthy this season too. I’m sad the auditions are over but it will be fun to see what happens in boot camp next week. I’m busy with class at night so I’ve been catching up on X Factor using Prime Time Anytime on my Hopper DVR. It automatically records all the prime time shows on the four major networks for me. Freddie and Trevor are getting all the attention from this episode but the best singer by far was Lauren. She has what it takes to do very well this season.

Watching the different unique people on these shows proves that beauty comes from within and is not attached to the outside. Look at Susan Boyle. So many people laughed at her because she wasn't beautiful and young before she had even sung a note. The audience was shocked and shamed when she sang with her beautiful voice. Just like this man, it is inspirational. Just when you think your life is not as good as you want, watching someone like Freddie makes you thankful you don't have his battle but can appreciate his gift of voice.

TV doesn't do us any favors by only portraying skinny people although, shows like Extreme Makeover do a great job in showing what happens when people stop judging and start caring.
So, let me get this straight, all of you are beautiful or handsome, perfectly fit, slim or even skinny. Some with abs of steel. You have perfect complexions, amazingly white teeth, absolutely unbelievable hair, and the color is, of course, natural. You are all very healthy. You go the the gym every day before or after your high paying, status symbol jobs. You are all very nice, kind people sitting in front of your computers... enjoying this short little time you have before you need to get ready for your exciting evening/day. Fearless, you can bully whomever you want, hiding behind your .screens, phones...whatever, I am sure you know what I mean because you are also, I am sure, very, very intelligent. But, are you courageous? I mean, can you take your perfect self, and all that talent you have out on that stage, before thousands of people? Can you? Oh, wait, I forgot to ask, can you sing?

I don't really care how big this guy is. I wish him luck with his weight loss. Am I the only one that thought his voice sucked? He was not on key, very pitchy. This show and the other open talent shows just show that you can't judge a book by it's cover. This guy has an amazing voice and it wouldn't matter if he was skinny as a pole, slightly overweight, handicapped due to some other medical reason, or whatever. However, I hope he does continue to lose weight and get healthy. I just don't quite understand though how people get to this size. Of course I understand that some people lose energy, enthusiasm, and just don't have time to eat right, exercise, or get proper rest. All that aside, I hope he gets the help he desperately needs.

Considering he was 900 and now ways 500 he is doing ok. Maybe you should be encouraging instead of just plain stupid. I'm guessing that is beyond you though. Me, I'm not fat, I eat healthy and I do moderate exercise, I have no clue how hard this guy has to work to get from 900 to 500lbs, that is pretty awsome!

I can't imagine how difficult it will be for him to deal with the issues and the pressure of being on the X Factor every week if he goes that far. everyone complains how the entertainment industry has become some kind of glamour show to make up for lost talent, now here we have an amazing voice coming from an amazing person who by the way has already begun challenging himself by losing nearly half his weight and making it on to the show. so where has this man not challenged himself?
