Lil Wayne passes Elvis Presley's Hot 100 recordLil Wayne is now the solo artist king of the Billboard Hot 100 charts, knocking The King of Rock and Roll out of the top spot. Billboard reports that the rapper has tallied 109 hits on the Hot 100, setting a new standard - and surpassing the record previously held by Elvis Presley. Since the chart's start in 1958 through 2003, Presley racked up 108 entries on the Hot 100.
But thanks to Weezy's appearance alongside Chris Brown, Tyga and Wiz Khalifa on The Game's "Celebration," which is cruising at No. 82 on the chart, the Young Money/Cash Money talent is the new solo artist to beat. While Wayne holds the top spot for a solo act with the most entries on the Hot 100, the "Glee" crew as a unit has amassed 204 entries on the chart. We suppose that's just one more goal for Weezy to reach for.

I guess the only problem with this 'modern age claim' is that Elvis produced real music. REAL rock n roll, REAL blues, etc etc. Put a guitar in Lil Wayne's hands and see if he could duplicate what Elvis did on the guitar in his late 60s comeback special. There IS a reason why Elvis is considered the king. It has to do with the fact that he was a complete musician. He understood the entire concept of it, and played real music, unlike the crud permeating the airwaves today. So, no Lil Wayne, you've set no records... that is unless you think cranking out formulaic crud is some kind of attribute.
I'm a musician and while I can't stand rap and hip hop I disagree that it's not music. It has words, lyrics, beat, tempo, timing, etc. Rap is a form of musical expression that's raw and mostly disturbing to me, but just because I don't like it doesn't mean it isn't a valid form of music. Hip hop is cool, I'm just not in the age demographic for it.
No way Lil Wayne tops Elvis per capita and I wish they would include that in their calculation. In my opinion, they should call it "Solo Artist King of the Billboard Hot 100 Charts (featuring Lil' Wayne)" given that most of his songs weren't his own singles. Using that math the Jordanairres would have to hold the #3 spot.

Lil Wayne certainly has made his accomplishments as a rapper, but I would definitely put an asterisk next to this "surpassing" of Elvis the King and his record. Remember, most of Elvis' top hits were chartbusters when he was still alive. This was when there was no iTunes, no internet, fewer music artists, and much of his music hadn't got to various countries yet. While Lil W2ayne may have numerically surpassed Elvis Presley, Elvis the King accomplished MORE per capita.

Back in the day you maybe had a crew like RUN DMC, ERIC B AND RAKIM, THE FAT BOYS,etc,but that was a set crew not a "feature". Very few modern rappers have the raw talent and skill to acheive this solo. Its just different.
