Will Britney help 'X Factor' mark its spot?

We're starting to feel bad for the singers auditioning on tonight's season 2 premiere of "The X Factor," because they're already irrelevant.

Judging from the laser-focus on the pop star's arrival as a new judge, "X Factor" is now Britney's show, and everyone else is just appearing on it.

That isn't to leave out "X Factor's" other new judge, Demi Lovato, who's also a solid audience draw with scores of devoted fans. But really, this is a slightly unexpected chapter in a story shaped before Lovato's time.

Not only have we watched Britney, with her bank account full of hits and eclipsing celebrity persona, go from indomitable to loose cannon to humbled and back again, but she's also facing off against an old rival.

Just as Spears and Christina Aguilera were pitted against one another as they stretched for pop domination in the late '90s/early aughts, the two are once again facing off as judges on competing singing competitions. (We guess some things really don't change.)

So while we'll be watching to see how Lovato gels with the other "X Factor" judges, Simon Cowell and L.A. Reid, and how the foursome will interact together in comparison to the prior judges' panel, we're really here to see what Britney will bring.

The media, including "X Factor's" network, Fox, seems aware of that, with rumors spreading months ahead of the premiere that Spears was storming off the set. (In actuality, she later clarified that she was just "taking a little break.")

Teasers have also raised the debate of whether Spears was going to be naughty or nice with the new slate of "X Factor" contestants, with Simon Cowell fanning the flames, calling her "quite mean."

But judging isn't as easy as it may look, Spears said in her defense Tuesday.

“It’s a hard thing to do because you have to use constructive criticism, but you don’t want to let the fans down because usually the fans do know what they like and what they don’t like," Spears told  us. Nonetheless, she said, "it’s fun.”

As for whether Spears will take the stage herself, she left room for hope: "Who knows?" she responded. "We'll see."

Cowell, meanwhile, was still raining against NBC for scheduling "The Voice" to air across three nights this week, causing the reality show to now share airtime with "X Factor's" premiere tonight at 8 p.m.

“They’ve tried to ruin the party by adding that additional night," Cowell said Tuesday. "It was a very, very deliberate move to try and stop people from watching our show. That’s why they did it, and I think it may backfire.”

Do you agree or disagree?

  2. X-Factor

Simone does not want an annoying tic next to him. Britney does have some experience and still has a huge fan base. This is a good career move for her. She is trying to be an adult and trying get a way the teenie bopper image. She made a couple of huge errors in her life but that is over, she seems very happy with this new man and he seems good for her which is all that matters in a relatioship.

Simon would have never hired her if she was crazy. no way. he likes her and she has those fans that will bring ratings in. I like her because she doesn't keep making same mistakes over again.

She will not help the show. She's a train wreck. If last night premiere is any indication of the success of the show, it's a wash. The show last night, is an X factor; It lacked the confidence of talent and seemingly focus more on emotional turmoil.

I'm sure you will do a fine job as a judge. You went thru the same sort of process as a child and emerged on top. You will do well!

I don’t see a problem with Simon Cowell hitching X-Factor’s wagon to Britney since she is one of the most famous pop stars in history. My girlfriend can’t wait to see her as judge, but we won’t be home tonight so I’m glad I turned on the PrimeTime Any Time feature on my Hopper. Now my DVR automatically records three hours of primetime coverage on the big four networks. A coworker at Dish told me about this option and it’s helped me keep up with shows when I have time for TV. I think The Voice tried to siphon off some viewers for The X-Factor premiere, but a lot of people are still going to watch tonight!

Simon, it was a mistake to get rid of Paula and bring on worthless Brittany Spears, she is going to lose it or go and get high or something like that while you are waiting for her to judge or what ever. This season is going to be a total flop and I am not going to waste my time watching....... Just like AI has lost all its fire; its over.............................

    SHE. CAN. NOT. SING.

Why on earth do these shows keep putting those with the LEAST amount of talent up there (Britney, Jennifer Lopez, etc.) to judge people with potential who can actually carry a tune. ugh.
