'Louie' and the hunt for Tape Recorder[This post contains spoilers for the August 23 episode of FX's "Louie."] On Thursday night's “Louie,” our sad sack hero searched for a pair of complicated women. Louie couldn’t stop dreaming about Liz, i.e. Tape Recorder, the enigmatic woman who took him on a strange but enlightening date earlier in the season. He went to the bookstore to find her.
But instead of Parker Posey, he found another indie darling - Chloe Sevigny. (Careful, she’ll shoot!) Her character Jeanie insisted they find Liz. As they stood across the street from Liz’s apartment, Louie confessed, “She changed how I feel about everything.” Though their mission failed, Jeanie urged Louie not to give up. “You can’t just drift through life and hope that love is just going to flow into you like plankton into a whale’s f****** mouth.” Then she pleasured herself. In the middle of a coffee shop. (Another case of stars confronting real-life controversy on “Louie”?) Before leaving, Jeanie informed Louie that she was married, so he shouldn’t come looking for her. In the second half of the episode, Louie saw some girls bullying Lilly after school. He took her to the carousel in Central Park to cheer her up. She stoically rode her pony as he bopped alongside her. When she gave him more attitude, Louie flipped her the double bird behind her back. When they got home, Louie retreated to the bathroom to smoke a cigarette on the can while looking at his computer (porn, I assume). When he finally emerged, Lilly was nowhere to be found. Jane informed him, nonchalantly, that “she left.” Frantic, Louie went to ask his neighbors (the couple who watched his girls in season 2, when he had to rush his sister to the hospital. You know, because she had to fart.) to watch Jane, but they were in the middle of an exceptionally dramatic fight. Outside, Jane started yelling in a strange language and casually explained to Louie that a school friend was teaching her Slovenian. Louie looked baffled, wondering what other secrets this mysterious little girl was hiding. Police crowded into his apartment and forced him to finally call his ex-wife. Just as he was about to tell Janet that Lilly was missing, she wandered through the room, headphones on, a blanket around her shoulders. She had been reading in a closet the whole time. She apologized for her behavior, and all was forgiven. Well, the cops still seemed pretty annoyed. As with any storyline involving his daughters (the two most natural child actors on television), this vignette rang with truth. Poor Louie. This is only the beginning of his girls’ mood swings and complicated emotions. But complex women fascinate Louie. While I’m disappointed that he didn’t find Liz Tape Recorder, I’m happy to know that she had such a profound effect on him. What did you think of last night’s episode? |

The people who hate this show are the kind of people who need to have their humor neatly laid out in front of them in easy to understand segments. They enjoy a laugh track and anything that involves Johnny Galecki. Those of us who appreciate a more subtle humor that's also uncomfortable and thought provoking will continue to watch this for as long as it remains on the air.
the scripts are written well and its a smart show...i am hoping for another season
oh i'm sorry i was just kidding –

the show is really about fun.
its called disfunction.
I don't understand. Every time I visit this discussion, there are one or two "Louie sucks, the show should be taken off the air" comments. Why do you watch it if you don't like it??? Phew. K that's off my chest. As for the last episode, I loved it. I love watching Louie because there is no way for me to fathom what happens next. Somehow, this brilliant man marries COMPLETE absurdity with the ABSOLUTE mundane of life... and comes up with something no short of a gift I receive on my TV.
when a show is great i love to hit the reaplay button more then once.
shows great i've seen it a couple of times ... however if another opportunity needs more strenghth and attention from me this is most important. i love being educated with new ideas.

My son Stanley and I can give him a B vitamin shot at our clinic.
Duh – his last name is foreign and is hard to pronounce by reading it, so he spells it phonetically. It is pronounced C.K.

I love Louie, but not last night
Louie is a wonderful actor–
Louis is a wonderful actor...
what wonderful acting on this show.
Last night was a great episode; it seems that this particular book store is a magnet for crazy women, which is why Louie keeps going back! I’m glad I recorded it on my Hopper last night since I was half-awake watching it, but I still remember the first half of the show vividly. I’ve been able to save all the Louie episodes so I can watch them a few times and have space to record other shows. My coworkers at Dish joke that I replay every episode more than anyone else they know, but it’s my favorite show on the air!
I love trendy shows. i'm glad i watched it.
never seen this show because A. I won't watch anything that's trendy (as in articles about it on every site) and B I won't watch a pretentious a$$hol that uses 2 letters as his last name.
You're not missing anything. It is a stupid show. Looking forward to its cancellation
