Joseph Gordon-Levitt's dream role

From “Inception” to “The Dark Knight Rises,” Joseph Gordon-Levitt has made a name for himself as an action star after more than 20 years in the biz.

But in an interview with Playboy, the actor said he’s ready to take on a role that’s “closer to me personally.”

“I would like to do a musical, if I could find a cool one,” Gordon-Levitt told the magazine. “A song-and-dance role is closer to me personally than other characters I play.”

Referencing the “Why Do You Let Me Stay Here” music video he made with “(500) Days of Summer” co-star Deschanel and director Mark Webb, he said, “When Zooey and I danced in that video, it was just us having a great time, just being ourselves.”

Despite the on-screen chemistry between Gordon-Levitt and Deschanel, and fans’ hopes that the pair might get together, the actor says they’re just friends.

“It’s awkward when people say that,” he said. “Whatever. Zooey and I just think it’s funny. It is funny. We’ve been friends for 10 years.”

So what does Gordon-Levitt look for in a partner?

“Making checklists of things you’re looking for in a person is the numero uno thing you can do to guarantee you’ll be alone forever,” he said. “You can’t meet someone and think, ‘Do they have everything I want in a person?’ You just have to pay attention, keep your eyes open, listen to people and be present. I guess what I look for in a girl is someone who’s doing that too. Beyond that there’s not much more I would specify.”

Catch Gordon-Levitt in the action flick “Premium Rush,” out Friday. “Looper,” in which he stars alongside Bruce Willis, is due out on September 28.

Yes, John Lithgow is still alive. He is super hilarious in 3rd rock. He played James Franco's dad in Rise of Planet of the Apes.

Anyone who saw his astounding opening on SNL, doing Donald O'Connor's "Make 'Em Laugh," knows that he has the song and dance talent – like Jimmy Cagney. I see him on Broadway in "The Music Man." He got the super talent – hope he gets his dream role. Seems like a decent, quality human being as well.

I guess he is afraid he wont get too many more action roles if he comes out of the closet even in gay-friendly hollywood

Where does it say he is gay? That's right it doesn't.

Wow, the only way you feel man enough is by saying someone else is gay? Guy's making millions and you're sitting on internet when you're not working McDs?

I saw one episode of Dexter but it was too far on for me to understand what was going on. Same as with The Sons of Anarchy, another great show that I seem to have missed. Now it looks like I missed another one..The Boss with Kelsey G. No, I don't live under a rock..just a weird schedule that I have. Not the normal 9-5 job...it's okay. It's all good. Thxs again.

Joseph has played some very creepy characters rather convincingly (Hesher, Killshot) and I am anxiously wating to see him in a lighter role, Inception non withstanding. Joseph is a good actor but still creeps me out. Good job, Joseph.

Electra! I am shocked and offended that you don't know I'm alive. Yes, I have been around. I won an Emmy a few years back for my portrayal of a serial killer in Showtime's Dexter!
