Target is typically the place to stock one's closet with bargain finds, but the retailer is moving into a more high-end category, and all because of "The Hunger Games."
In alignment with the film's release on DVD and Blu-ray August 18, Target's going to sell "Hunger Games"-themed "keepsakes" in very limited quantities on Target.com, including 100 14-carat gold replicas of Katniss Everdeen's Mockingjay pin.
Katniss herself, however, would probably experience sticker shock over the price: Target's retailing the replica pins for $999.
It's the first time the outlet has offered licensed products in that range, a statement says, and the other two keepsake items are pricier than what you might usually expect from the store chain.
In addition to the pins, Target's also planning to offer 100 replicas of Katniss's leather jacket (seen in the photo from the film above) for $349; and 100 lithographs bearing the signatures of 10 of the blockbuster film's stars - including the actress who portrayed Katniss, Jennifer Lawrence.
Target's Vice President of Entertainment, John Butcher, said in a statement that while Target is indeed known "for providing must-have merchandise at an unbeatable value ... we wanted to surprise our guests by taking it up a notch for ‘The Hunger Games’ and unveiling a prestige collection for devoted fans.”
Someone on vintage archery: should she be resting the arrow on top of her index finger? Also her elbow looks a little high. I know noting about styles in the old days. thanks
wayy over priced especially being i could get basically the same thing elsewhere for less than a 10th of the cost. hell i could have one custom made with better gold for cheaper.
someone called my friend a bigot for getting some food at chick-fil-a. lol
we made fun of them lol. who even uses that word??
Not really too realistic.
I'd rather get a bunk bed. There'd be so much more rooo for Activities!
I know where they can stick that overpriced pin.
Yeah – the economy is REAL bad if morons can buy this junk. Feed someone. I can see unemployment money going to pay for part of it most likely.
I very rarely shopped at Target anyway, but since the Whitney Houston Bobby Brown Valentine incident I haven't shopped there since. Also where I live there is a Target in my part of town,a very affluent part and yes a lot of my neighbors shop there, soccer moms here especially love it.
I am going to buy one of these for my prized ho. even if it makes the jewish ones jealous.
If I had the money, I would buy one (if there were indeed only 100 available) and sell it on ebay later that day with a $1000 reserve to whomever thought it was worth that kind of money. so yes, I woulc buy it but definately not to keep.
Stephanie, you are living proof that there truly is a greedy sucker born every day. No one is going to pay a grand for a pin from Target, regardless of the tie-in.
Currently camping outside my local Target in hopes I get one. These will easily go for $3350 on eBay.
Keep telling yourself that. How's your Facebook stock?
Hello folks. Everyone is cordially invited to visit – thestarofkaduri.com
Everyone is sick of your advertising whoring jack, go suck some c0ck
I hope there isn't a kid out there saving up to buy this garbage.
Don't be the "Target" with this nonsense.
I bought one and traded it for secks with a random girl. Now I'm broke and it burns when I p.
that sounds like a real bummer, dude! lol
hmmm $999. some call girls and a bottle of jack sounds like a better purchase to me!
I doubt I'm the first guy to poop in his girlfriend's shower...
What? target cheap? really?..i think they r way more over priced plus my husband refuses to shop there cause our target would not let salvation army bell ringers set up out front during christmas.
Target does not allow for salvation army to set up outside because it's a distraction for their customer. However, when I asked someone at salvation army about it they told me that target donates more than double what the salvation army usually makes during the holidays to make up for their lack of presence. Why don't people look into things before they make up their mind on them. I did not like targets decision at first but a little research and you would know that they are trying to maintain their image while continuing to help different charities. They are so give 3 million a week to charities. Just saying.
If they wouldn't use such a high pitched bell, it wouldn't be so annoying. I have to plug my ears it is so bad. A more pleasant sounding bell could probably bring in more money.
If I had the money to spare- yeah I'd buy it. But I don't have close to it. Hope they can make a cheaper version, I don't even think the pin was that high quality in the boo,.
I want to buy a thousand and melt them into a golden hedgehog and pray to him as my god. Romney 2012.
I want to buy them all with government handouts. Wait – that is what will happen!
L M F A O! Ron Paul 2012!
Why is everyone complaining about something that is too pricey for your personal budget. Just because it cost too much for you to afford does not mean you can leave 50 comments saying its dumb. Do you go to the BMW blogs and complain about a $50,000 car when a Honda civic is $15,000. I just don't understand why everyone cares to say "hey I can't afford this". Who cares, it's not marketed to you.
"Why is everyone complaining about something that is too pricey for your personal budget."
That's exactly why no one complains about being able to afford your mother as a kum dumpster :-D
I want to buy all of them.
I'm saving my money for the $4,300 KISS Monster book. No, I'm not really doing that, but check out http://www.kissmonsterbook.com. The book really costs $4,300!
Whats sad is people WILL buy them. Whats even more sad is yould could probably have onade made from gold for 1/3 the price. If not, im sure walmart will be selling plastic ones for $1 soon enough.
Quick! Where's the closest Target? I want to see someone dumb enough to buy a $999 pin based on a movie/book!
Good one! Too bad it says they are sold online so going to target to watch dumb people buy them isn't possible. I guess your post declared that only are you poor (can't afford $999 jewelry) but you also are stupid. Or atleast have poor comprehension abilities.
brandon, go drown yourself please
In keeping with the stupidity of the film, the picture shows her holding the arrow against the back (knuckle side) of her left (or bow) hand. Pathetic.
I ... I never noticed that before. Wow.
"Would you buy a $999 Hunger Games" pin?
"No one ever went broke underestimating the stupidity of the American public." -P.T. Barnum
It should be given out for free. Along with a complimentary bow and arrow.
Just couldnt get over how much the book ripped off running man
I didn't even pay $9 to see the movie.
Oh the irony!
AHH I'll buy it at a fine price!
YES YES YES!!!!!
The book, as well as the movie, sucked. It's just more trendy trash of modern youth.
@Dumb book, if you actually took the time to read the books before bashing them, then you might see that they are pretty good reading fare. No, I wouldn't go out and buy any of the Target products, but the books are definitely worth taking the time to read.
No, Paul, the book was really just more trendy trash For the modern youth, So set the twilight novels down, take the set of hairy glittery vampire c0ck and balls out of your mouth, and Try some Pulitzer prize winning material, if you can comprehend big words.
I'll buy it for 9 cents lol
i would not go to target period.
Target is way cool. I love the store and its quality products.
No I would not. The book sucked.
No but I'll sell you one for $450.00. Shipping is only $12.50.
(I made a ton selling pieces of the Berlin Wall)
No, and I loved the book and movie.
I wouldn't spend 4.99 on that thing.
Cesar Fleckman thanks you and hopes that the odds are ever in your favor.
Man, it's sweet being part of the 1%. I ordered five of these things.
hey Banker if you really are a Banker and did buy five of them you really should start looking for a job at Macdonald's because you're about to lose a ton of money trying to sell them.First you obviously don't have common sense especially in the business you claim to be in (Banking) because a Banker would know the value of this pin which is worthless
Never shopped at Target or Walmart. You get what you pay for. You're better off pay more for clothes that will last longer. Just my opinion.
Yes..I know it's not clothes they're talking about..but it also goes for jewelry and everything else..just about.
Only if it comes with a $1,000 rebate
For $999 I could get a candlelit dinner with Jennifer Lawrence
Don't mind if I do! Now that's money well spent! Hopefully she won't be faking it the whole time!
My daughter has one.It cost me 10 bucks. That's good enough.
Hunger Games lost me by the fact that it wasn't a very good book. Ergo I never saw the movie so no way in hell would I pay a grand for a (14k, psh!) gold pin.
I loved the books. Read them twice. Beautifully constructed and written.
Ahh, Hunger Games. The ripoff of Battle Royale. Can't see Target successfully entering the higher price point collectible market.
II'd rather have the "hand of the King" pin from Game of Thrones
You know nothing! Haha
well, if those smart people who paid thousands of bucks for virtual items on farmville, the same smart people will certainly can dole out 1,998 smart bucks for 2 of these pins (just in case they lose 1 when they move later – god forbid they won't lose both)
let the 1% and Hollywood `stars' buy them! They don't go to Target anyway!
hahaha people are so dumb, there is NO way there are only 100 of each of those items, there are thousands and each person who buys one will be getting their very own scam in a box. GRATS!
Oh don't worry there are plenty of moron's and fool's that buy any thing that is new and connected to Hollywood. You have heard the old saying " a fool and his money is soon parted".By the way solid gold (22 carat gold) which is going about $1,500 an ounce makes this pin fall way short of it's value(14 carat gold). What does this pin weigh 15 grams? There are 28 grams in an ounce and I understand the pop culture that goes along with it.Either way this pin is way over priced
Are soon parted
24K is the purest form of commercial gold, other than bullion!
This "special promotion" will make a lot more kids sad than it will make happy. Most of the kids that liked the movie who shop Target will see/want the items but won't be able to afford them, shame on Target for doing this.
The kids won't but they'll torture their parents into making sacrifices to get one.
Sure I'd buy one. I'd hate to see all those marketing people go hungry.
Does it come with an order of fries? If so, I'd buy it.
I don't think Target cares if they sell any pins.
A Katniss leather jacket – $399
A gold pin – $999
Free publicity – Priceless.
If you put the decimal between the $ sign and 99...I might.
The movie was hella boring and cheesy.
Don't you dare! Those are children's lives you are talking about.
doesn't that go against the book's message?
No, but I wouldn't do a lot of insane things that people like to do these days, like watch Jersey Shore, vote for Romney, and live for Facebook updates.
Loved the books. Loved the film. Would NOT pay that kind of money for a gold pin, especially a piece of pop culture memorabilia. What is Target thinking? People who shop at Target are not going to have that kind of money and if they did, they would not spend it on that silly pin. People with the sort of expendable income to afford a trinket like that don't generally shop at Target. Whoever at Target dreamed this idea up will be shopping themselves soon - for a new job.
Gold is fairly expensive nowadays, but that pin could easily be made with a blow torch, some Sculpey, and a Delft clay mold, without the shame of saying 'I got it at Target!'.
Don't you just love living in the Capitol?
Let's see. A poorly made pin from a poorly made movie based on a poorly written book. Sounds about right!
I wouldn't buy the $9.99 book!
Exactly what I was thinking! If they paid me $999 I would take if off their hands . . .
IKR! That price is freaking stupid JUST for a MockingJay pin! I mean I would rather make one myself! GEEEZ! Thier NUTS! NUTS I tell you! I mean for example, it's like paying 10,000,000 for JUST a Katniss shirt, or the movie, or all three books! Thats how crazy it is!
let me think................NO.
The actual pin in the book was made of gold. The movie changed that and the way she got it.
be nice. we live in one world together there is no reason for hostility. relax and have fun.
these blogs have been awful since end of june. Please be nice to each other for goodness sakes.
Shut up instigator.
Hunger Games lost me when fans made the big stink about people of color being cast in the movie. Who wants to be a part of a fan group that bigoted? Now Target has sunk to an all new low.... 100 only available of each special promotional item? I wonder which high end special 100 people will get these items? Please avoid the Target website this day & watch the crazy people come out of the woodwork again.
...but they claim only a few bigots complained about wasting tears over a black Rue.Only a few?Yea right, that's i've heard all my life,I won't boycott the movie because they could have easily made every character white but they didn't.I won't be buying that pen though,it's to expensive for Target.
if i'm worth 9.99.. your with nothing.
I'd rather just buy the DVD. A thousand bucks pays a lot of bills for me.
Theyll probably go on discount after Christmas.
I might give them $9.99 for it. Actually, that would be a real deal if it's 14 carat gold. Never mind!
No way,I wouldn't pay $99.OO for that pin at Target.
