Ryan Murphy on 'New Normal' boycott: Try it, you might like itForthcoming NBC comedy "The New Normal" hasn't aired yet but it's already lost favor with one set of viewers. The group One Million Moms is boycotting the Ryan Murphy-created show on the grounds of it being "harmful to our society." Actors Andrew Rannells and Justin Bartha ("The Hangover") star in the upcoming show as a gay couple searching for a surrogate to carry their baby. Murphy has said he believes the folks with One Million Moms will actually like the show once they watch it, reports E! Online. “For the first time they will be represented!" he said at a recent press conference. One of the characters, portrayed by Ellen Barkin, "is a member of the Million Moms," Murphy explained. "I think their points of view are delivered with sensitivity and a certain amount of voracity by Ms. Barkin. I think if they watched it, they would like it … She will protest people and events and I think it will be great fodder for [the characters] Bryan and David to talk about." The "Glee" executive producer continued, "Every person and group has a right to protest something. ... I find it to be interesting that they would take a position before they've seen it." For Murphy, some of the characters portrayed strike particularly close to home - particularly since Barkin’s character was reportedly inspired, in part, by his grandma. "I remember Thanksgivings when I was growing up and my grandma would say jaw-dropping things and we would call her out on it," he said. "It felt very familiar to me. Hopefully it will feel familiar to other people." For his part, Rannells - who also plays Elijah on HBO's hit show “Girls” - said he was enthused about the controversy. "I was very excited I was mentioned by first and last name in the boycott," he said. "It was a real honor and a real treat. It's my first boycott!" |
