So far, this season of "So You Think You Can Dance" has had the best start since season 5, or possibly season 4. I haven't been this excited about the talent in this year's top 20 in a long time.
Let's just get right to the bad news first. Four dancers were eliminated at the end of the episode, taking us down to 16 dancers. But I think America and the judges made the right decision in losing Daniel, Nick and Janaya.
It was really sad to see Alexa go, however, since about 50 percent of the Las Vegas episode was about her. But the ballroom talent this year is so great that you can't lose Witney (and sorry, I actually liked the samba last week).
So let's move on to the routines with dancers who will return next week (it is a bit of an adjustment, not having a results show...):
First, Lindsay and Cole brought us a routine revolving around dentistry that could have been a train wreck. Cole had a little method acting going on, reminiscent of season 2's "Tranji." These two are already proving to be a powerhouse duo. They pulled this one off and then some.
The person who is surprising me the most this season is not a dancer, but Sonya Tayeh. The choreographer has stepped up (you're welcome, Adam Shankman!) her game, going beyond the sorts of work we expect from her. A great example of that was Amelia and Will's routine. I think that's one we'll see again in the finale.
Amber and Nick surprised as well with an extraordinary tango. So far, we're three for three here. I like where this is going - except for the fact that Nick is now dunzo.
Audrey and Matthew were two who could have easily faded into the background. Instead, they breathed new life into a Sonya routine that may have seemed a bit too familiar. Great work there.
Janelle and Dareian were the first pair who may be in danger next week, which is sad because Janelle is so unique. Their routine to "My Girl" didn't inspire the judges very much.
Janaya and Brandon's routine was a lot of fun, but it's all over for Janaya now.
As for Eliana and Cyrus, here are two who could easily rule the roost, but they're not there yet. They certainly made a good case for it with their jive. The fact that Cyrus alone could even pull off a jive is amazing in and of itself. I pronounce them safe for another week!
Tiffany and George's fox trot could have been the kiss of death (and it still might be), but they rose to the occasion, at least as far as the judges were concerned.
We've had five seasons of Bollywood routines, and there's a danger of "you've seen one, you've seen them all"-itis here, but Witney and Chehon did a remarkable job. At the same time, both were in danger, so who's to say they won't be again?
Lastly, I can't tell you how gratifying it is to see so many "SYTYCD" alums in an upcoming movie. Gosh, what is the name of it though? If only Adam had mentioned it a few dozen times or so. Oh, right, "Step Up Revolution!" Congratulations to Kathryn McCormick, tWitch and the rest!
