Did Letterman spoil the ending to 'Dark Knight Rises'?

Thursday's edition of "Late Show with David Letterman," which had "The Dark Knight Rises" actress Anne Hathaway on as a guest, might've needed a spoiler alert.

Hathaway, sporting her cropped hair for "Les Miserables," was chatting with Letterman about Christopher Nolan's anticipated Batman film when the late night host made a comment that did not please fans.

"I saw the Batman movie," Letterman said, giving it praise and noting how the lengthy running time "flies by." But he did opt to remark that "in the end, Batman is dead."

Seeing that he burst out in laughter following that comment, he was either really kidding, or just found it funny that he dropped a spoiler.

"Metaphysically, or emotionally?" Hathaway inquired, either playing along or trying to diffuse the situation, as she points out that the question of whether Batman lives or dies in Nolan's film is "a whole thing.

"He ain't dead, just relax, will ya?" Letterman responded.

If it turns out he does die at the end, Hathaway's already cleared her name. She gave Letterman fair warning and issued an apology to the director.

"I just want you to know the wrath that you have just invited onto yourself," the 29-year-old star said. "Chris, I had no part in it, I'm sorry."

To hear Hathaway talk about playing Catwoman, check out the video below:

You guys are missing the biggest part – they did NOT edit this out of the broadcast, which means the studio was OK with the conversation. Things slip all the time during these segments, and they are always edited out if it's not meant to be said. This did not happen, and I guarantee you they checked with WB to make sure this was OK, or else it would've never been shown on TV and never known period. It was either a PR stunt, or Dave was actually just joking around, and there' s no doubt about it being it wasn't edited out for broadcast.

She "defused" the situation. It's impossible to "diffuse" a situation.

    • sam

They are both acceptable in their own ways. You defuse a bomb and you diffuse bright light. In fact, I would consider diffuse to be the proper analogy in this case, because it was not a moment of tension that was suddenly released, but rather an attempt to muddle about what the audience thought they were hearing.

      July 19, 2012 at 12:41 pm | Report abuse |
    • Ella Jay

actually not impossible at all, if you actually look up the word. one would, in effect, diffuse the situation by infiltrating it with other situations, e.g., if everything is too tense, various sources of frivolity converging on the situation at once would not only defuse the situation, but it also would diffuse it.

"1: being at once verbose and ill-organized
      2: not concentrated or localized

Judging from your arrogent and ignorant comment, it sounds to me like you've never watched Letterman a day in your life. You must be a Leno fan or maybe one of his producers, as you actually described him, instead. Leno is as out of touch as can possibly be, and more unlikable than Bush #2. He doesn't really care, either, cause he is über wealthy and has more cars in his garage than are driving around Manhattan at this very moment.

I think the studio paid him to say it. That way, we would all be shocked and appalled into talking about it on this website, which second only to the national media talking about it on the evening news last night. Tons of free advertising. As far as the actual ending, either the trailers let out too much of the secret about Batman giving everything to Gotham: "Not everything, not yet" or that's a plant just to set us up for a surprise ending. I think it's a setup because the posters also say "It ends". We'll see.

HAHA racist mexican jokes are the best. Most of the time if you just state a fact about a mexican, it comes out as a joke! How do you starve a mexican? You hide his food stamp card in his work shoes!!!

Oh please. Are you people naive or what? Letterman didn 't spoil anything. I thought that was ABUNDANTLY apparent during his interview with Hathaway. But I guess fools will believe anything.

A very twisted remark. All of this anger towards Anne Hathaway is very, deeply disturbing. I have been a fan of Batman since I was 4 years old and Christopher Nolan knows what he is doing. Hathaway is a very accomplished actress and has devoted herself to her craft...give her a chance. By the by, the way that some of the folks here talk, I am guessing that they are unavoidably single and will probably stay that way thinking about women the way they seem to.

You sound like some crotchety old complaining get off my lawn senior. Im sure there are some reruns of Matlock or Murder she Wrote on cable..if you have it. Get a clue

I'm guessing that Batman isn't dead at the end of the movie. If it plays true to the comic books Bane breaks Batman's back but doesn't kill him. If they play that card then they can spin into a new set of films in which Bruce Banner retires and brings on a protege to be the next Batman.

This is not news. I already knew the ending to the Dark Knight Rises before it hit theatres, and not through the internet or magazine back story. I learned about it first hand, and surprise surprise, it's NO surprise. People need to relax, get over themselves, and go on with their nominal little lives.

I doubt he ruined the ending – I mean, that would be a very cliche way to end a series – but even if he did, it's really not that big of a deal. The point is to see how a story develops towards an ending, not just to be presented with an ending – I feel that the journey is the more important factor of a movie.

Bain is the one that killed Batman in the comics, so it would only make sense.

He didn't kill Batman. He broke his back during an altercation and left him for dead. Bruce was out of the game for a year and after a few twists and turns and two other characters assuming the mantle for a time, he returned - in full Bat glory - and took the mantle back and proceeded to disassemble BANE like he was born to do it...

Bain does not kill Batman. He "breaks the bat." which I hope is the real ending. Given the promotional material and how close they have followed the story I give it a high chance.

Robin – Bain did not KILL Batman in the comics. He DID break his back and put him out of comission, but he def did not kill him. In doing so Bruce Wayne found a replacement for himself as Batman.

As a continuation about my ealier post. This could be a good thing that THIS Batman (BALE) gets broken and they cast a new person to play the new batman. I have never liked Bale. Such a pompous, arrogant tool. Im thinking since SPider Man used Tobey Mcguire, the New Batman could be ..say..Jim Parsons aka Sheldon Cooper on Big Bang Theory. *Bazinga!*
