Wednesday night's 200th episode of "So You Think You Can Dance" finally revealed this season's top 20, and with a couple of exceptions (Megan - one of my favorite auditions this season - and Abigail were both eliminated) I was very pleased to see who made the cut.
Zooey Deschanel was on hand to judge (well, kinda-sorta since no one was getting eliminated) the various group routines where the dancers showed off their styles. Zooey more or less did what was expected of her here, which was to tell the dancers how great they are.
The highlight there was the three-person ballroom routine - hot tamales all around!
But we'll wait a couple of weeks, when the real competition starts, to talk about routines. Instead, let's look at the top 20 individually.
Alexa: It was almost a fait accompli that this talented, if at times emotionally challenged, contemporary dancer would make it through. The producers followed her every step of the way through Las Vegas. Now, let's see if she can live up to the hype.
Lindsay: In retrospect, I think she is a stronger dancer than her BFF Witney, but the two ballroom dynamos will certainly be a major force this season.
Witney: In general, I'm just happy to see more ballroom this season, so the more the merrier.
Audrey: She farts with her neck. What's not to like? I anticipate lots of funny rehearsal packages from her, which could be enough to keep her around.
Janaya: Who? Another one of the people-we-barely-saw-till-they-make-the-top-20. We'll have to wait and see, really.
Eliana: The Cirque du Soleil pole dancer absolutely killed it in that ballet routine on Wednesday.
Amber: The third time was the charm for her, so we'll see if she can make the most of it.
Janelle: This bellydancer certainly made her mark, and "SYTYCD" history, by getting cast this season. And it looks like she's good at other styles as well.
Amelia: I cannot tell you how happy I am that she made it through. She is so terrific in her unique style, so I hope she can shine in others.
Tiffany: This jazz dancer is mostly known as the "competition" for Audrey at this point (never a good place to start).
Daniel: His performance in the ballet routine was pure perfection. Looking for a lot of great things from him.
Nick: He couldn't quite keep up with Lindsay and Witney, but it's terrific to have another male ballroom dancer on the show.
Cole: There is no one like him, and I think his kung-fu style might win over voters.
Matthew: A bit forgettable so far, but that could change soon.
Dareian: Not as strong as some of his counterparts in the group routine.
George: Definitely one of the judges' favorites, and he's really growing on me now.
Brandon: This may be the first time someone in a step group has made it to the top 20. It will be interesting to note his progress.
Cyrus: If anyone was followed in Vegas more than Alexa, it was Cyrus. And for good reason. His popping and locking is mesmerizing. Now let's see if he can master the other styles.
Will: We saw him briefly Wednesday night, but not enough to form an opinion.
Chehon: The weak link of the three in ballet – which, granted, is not saying much. He's still a brilliant dancer.
