I said it in a tweet last night, and I'll say it now: Las Vegas week is the best/worst part of the season.
As usual, for every dancer who made it into the final group before the top 20 was chosen, there were many who were cut. And when Broadway choreographer Tyce Diorio is involved, that usually means it's not a terribly pleasant experience.
Here's my look back at Wednesday night's highlights and lowlights:
Lowlight: "Exorcist" dancer Hampton had one of the most memorable auditions of the season, but as soon as he started to learn tWitch and Comfort's choreography, he knew he was out of his element. The talented popper-locker bowed out of the competition early on, breaking all of our hearts.
Highlight: Another one of the most memorable contenders, wannabe "flapper" (or "Timewarpian") Amelia, was asked to dance for her life when she faltered during the jazz round. Before long, several judges were in tears (including – shocker – Adam Shankman) and Sonya Tayeh remarked, "I just want to get my hands on her!" She was through, and made it to the end of Vegas week.
Lowlight: Adrian, who nearly made the top 20 in season 7, was one of my favorites going into Vegas. He made it ever so close to the final cut, but went home after his final solo. I really hope he gives it one more try.
Highlight: Alexa, who was in a similar position to Adrian, got torn to shreds by Tyce, Mary Murphy and, of all people, Adam, during the group routine round. Despite this, she found that "light" she needed through the rest of Vegas week and now stands a real chance to make the top 20. Debbie Allen said she could win it all. (Though I will admit, she's not one of my favorites.)
Lowlight: This one really hurt. Krumper Mariah nearly made it to the end of Vegas, but it was not meant to be. Another one I hope to see return.
Highlight: In a one-two-three punch for the ballroom genre, BFFs Lindsay and Whitney sailed through Vegas, while bellydancer Janelle also got to the end of the week as well.
Lowlight: Two members of the Dragon House crew were eliminated - during the hip-hop round. Ouch.
Highlight: Cyrus, on the other hand, fought his way through Vegas, and dare I say that he has a great shot at winning as favorite guy this year. (As for favorite girl, I have my money on Amelia, but there's a lot more competition there.)
Sadly, the lowlights didn't nearly cover all of the people who were cut: I will also miss Deanna, Teddy (who vowed to stop auditioning), mother of two Bree, "genius" Aubrey, Courtney (whose grandmother stole the show in Atlanta), the injured Danielle and this year's Kent Boyd, Asher, among many others.
I'm excited to see the top 20 finally revealed next week. Which dancers are you pulling for? Which cuts stung the most for you? Share your video or comment below.
Cyrus' inclusion is disgusting to me. He failed miserably at most of the choreo but because they want someone from dragon crew in the top 20, but he stinks at choreo while others like Adrian are getting booted. Nigel wasn't kidding when he said they wern't looking for the best dancers this year, they were looking for the more intersting.
Look at them jungle bunnies go!
