Edie Falco: No humor in 'Nurse Jackie's' drug use

Edie Falco is perhaps best known for portraying feisty mob wife Carmela Soprano on HBO's "The Sopranos," but the 48-year-old star is currently treating ‘em and streeting ‘em as New York  E.R. nurse Jackie Peyton on Showtime's “Nurse Jackie.”

While she always acts in the best interest of her patients, Falco’s character has a dirty little secret: a crippling addiction to prescription drugs. The issue was tackled head-on this season when Jackie was finally sent to rehab.

In an interview with CNN’s A.J. Hammer, Falco said that she’s rarely caught off guard by fans who approach her on the street, but there was once someone who boasted that he did the same drugs as her character.

“I didn’t know how to respond,” she said. “I don't want anyone to think that the overall idea that she's a drug addict is funny. It's important to me that when all is said and done, that comes across.”

Showtime recently renewed the series for a fifth season, and that’s good news for Falco, who says that she’s happiest when she’s working. She’s quick to add, however, that her priorities have changed.

“I'm no longer where I was ten years ago where I was like, ‘I'll take anything,’” she said. “I have a life outside of work now – my kids, in particular – so I don't want to take jobs just for the heck of it. It's got to be really good.”

Up next, we'll be chatting with Keira Knightley. If you have a question for the actress, here’s your chance to ask her anything! Hit up our iReport interview page to submit your questions and see which celebrities we’re talking to next.

First of all, I am a huge fan of the show – not at first, but really became engaged with the characters due to the strong storyline and great acting. Falco is awesome but I have to say that she is overshadowed by "Zoe" her fellow nurse on the show. On a serious side, drug abuse among doctors and nurses is unfortunately common and the hospitals and other medical employers know this – it's hushed and handled internally. In fact, most of the time, the public is not able to see discipline action for these professionals – which is what I would like to see changed.

The difference is that even though Jackie had some serious drug problems she was able to keep it together the whole time. In reality when you have that serious of a drug problem you are not able to keep it together at all. Those drugs make you fall to sleep in seconds once you sit down. If you smoke there is a good chance you will burn something and possibly start the house on fire. If you drive good luck with that etc etc. It is all bad and having a life outside of the drug use is almost impossible. Some people use the stuff that is prescribed and use it as an excuse but there is no excuse for that type of abuse.

I love the show - but .... Nurse Jackie is not only a drug addict, but an adulterer, a liar and a thief. Some heroine. Falco is great. Some of the other - women - cast members are great, too. The men - not so much.

It's only a few that are addicts. Most nurses and doctors take their professions very seriously. There you go, jumping to conclusions again, you self-righteous b!tch.

No, but her character's drug use is an accurate portrayal of what some nurses struggle with. I used to work as a orderly and witnessed 2 nurses who were users. they would give the patients saline or tic-tacs and keep the good stuff for themselves. They got busted, of course.

No, stupid. I was the one who reported them. That's why they got busted. Jump to conclusions much, you finger-pointer?
