Edie Falco is perhaps best known for portraying feisty mob wife Carmela Soprano on HBO's "The Sopranos," but the 48-year-old star is currently treating ‘em and streeting ‘em as New York E.R. nurse Jackie Peyton on Showtime's “Nurse Jackie.”
While she always acts in the best interest of her patients, Falco’s character has a dirty little secret: a crippling addiction to prescription drugs. The issue was tackled head-on this season when Jackie was finally sent to rehab.
In an interview with CNN’s A.J. Hammer, Falco said that she’s rarely caught off guard by fans who approach her on the street, but there was once someone who boasted that he did the same drugs as her character.
“I didn’t know how to respond,” she said. “I don't want anyone to think that the overall idea that she's a drug addict is funny. It's important to me that when all is said and done, that comes across.”
Showtime recently renewed the series for a fifth season, and that’s good news for Falco, who says that she’s happiest when she’s working. She’s quick to add, however, that her priorities have changed.
“I'm no longer where I was ten years ago where I was like, ‘I'll take anything,’” she said. “I have a life outside of work now – my kids, in particular – so I don't want to take jobs just for the heck of it. It's got to be really good.”
