Will Marvel give the Black Panther a movie next?

Don't get your hopes up yet, but rumor has it that Marvel's considering bringing the Black Panther to the big screen.

The movie site Latino Review reports that the company that recently blew the roof off the movie industry with its superhero-ensemble movie “The Avengers” would like to do the same with another proposed franchise built around the Black Panther, which first made its appearance in 1966.

The Black Panther story is about a Wakandan prince and warrior named T’Challa who, upon passing a series of critical trials and tests, becomes the leader of his nation. Of, course, he also has crazy superhuman powers.

Some of the names that have been kicked around the Web for the potential leading role include actors Idris Elba, Nate Parker, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Anthony Mackie.

Neither Marvel nor its parent company Disney have confirmed the story, however, and Entertainment Weekly cites its own Marvel sources who say the reports aren't true but declined to comment further. At this point, we're doing some wishful thinking.

If the movie did come together, who would you want to star?

Except this black panthers' only power would be to stand outside of a polling place in philly and try to intimidate white voters
Then superintendant Holder would do nothing

Will whomever they cast be "black" enough? Will they be "African" enough? Will people complain that whomever is cast is too "light" for the role? Will they cast an African or an African-American or a European of African descent?

The guy that played "Candyman", is Tony Todd. In my opinion, he way too tall and old for that role. I think Michael Jai White would make a better T'Challa.

Just to let my geek flag fly...
    Agreements:
-Although Shemar Moore has the right look (build, features, intensity) for the part, his skin is too light to be a Central African. Wakanda is deep in the heart of Africa and would probably be completely isolated if not for its supply of Vibranium.
-The Black Panther could be made into an excellent (and well-performing) movie if the budget is kept reasonable with the focus on story. He is a low-powered character much like the pre-'Ultimate' Captain America (except smarter), so the CGI could be kept to a minimum.
-The Vibranium angle could be a great tie-in to several of the existing Marvel movie storylines.
    Disagreements:
-The actor chosen should be in his mid-20s if the movie is an origin story. Wesley Snipes, Idris Elba, Omar Epps and several other named actors are just too old to play T'Challa, although some would be good candidates for T'Chaka.
-T'Challa does have superpowers, he's just not a high-powered guy from a Marvel universe standpoint: Maximum human potential strength and agility combined with superhuman senses (perfect night vision, enhanced hearing, etc.). He is also a genius with an excellent education and highly trained in Wakandan martial arts.

Hey Sean, your right about T'challa his character should be played by someone in their early 20's. And i know the perfect fit.Me I'm 22 year old I'm from Griffin G.A. i'll been reading up on character "Black Panther" and the more, more I read about him, i can see myself playing the character. I've done extra work for DropDeadDiva and Recfity. I'm ready to test my luck with this character. I would really like to see this character come to life on the big screen. let's make a masterpiece happen.

Black superheroes simply wouldn't draw enough ticket money to make it worth the while. Just the way it is. That is why most movies in general contain White stars with Black supporting cast members. It is pretty much the same formula that nearly every movie in Hollywood has ever had. The privledges of White rank has not changed, nor will change it anytime soon

Blade was an exception, I'll grant you.(The first one was great, the last two sucked). However it usually is too much of a gamble and too expensive for these studios to take a chance. The super hero movie market is already flooded anyway. Second banana Black super heroes would surely suffer. But hey, I'd like to see them prove me wrong and go for it.

Of all the suggestions so far...I'm leaning towards Hounsou. Smart dude, physically imposing, essential african accent. M. Jai White – good martial artist, too many roids. Shemar Moore has the right physicality. BP is a complex character. I'd suggest a character team up for the movie. Power-Man? Iron Fist? Story and character first, action and effects second. They could make some coin on this.

Marvel should think carefully before greenlighting this project. T'Challa has never had enough fan support to even have his own book dedicated to him. Without that support, who will be the ones to sit outside the box office on opening night? Who will be the ones to drive internet buzz and filling the auditoriums at ComiCon? Look at the results for all the "B" tier character movies (Daredevil, Punisher, Ghost Rider, John Constantine, Jonah Hex, etc.) and you get a sense of what the potential of this franchise would be. I mean...if Wolverine was a dud then I doubt that the Black Panther would have better results. I suppose if Marvel kept to a modest budget and focused on a good story then they could net a profit on the movie. But if they give it the "tentpole" treatment of an Iron Man or Thor then it would be a major disaster.

He's had several, you silly man. The Priest run was the best of the lot. Sadly, the dreadful run by Reginald Hudlin got far more support from Marvel, and was even turned into an awful TV series.

BP does not have "crazy superhuman powers". He has enhanced athletic abilities, amazing Wakandan technology, and is one of the smartest people on the planet. He is basically what would happen if you combined Batman skills with Captain America physical enhancements and then made that person king.

I think its funny that so many people are saying that the movie will not do well at the box office because it is a black character. Its 2012. Realize that when you state that without any real information to base it on it is obviously based upon your own racial prejudices/inclinations and general small mindedness.

Dude, you have no idea what you are talking about. Just because its a black super hero does not mean the movie will be made for PC reasons. T'Challa is a major player in the Marvel comic universe and it only makes sense to bring him in to the universe they are creating with the movies.

I have to agree with Tim on this one. Movie producers analyze everything to maximize profits. That includes your main characters race. The Black Panther is a “c” level character at best. This would simply be an attempt to bring in a new audience from the black community who historically has no interest in comic book characters.

Black panther's tribe guards a deposit of vibranium underneath their village due to a comet being unearthed that gives him abilities from the vibranium running through his blood. Captain americas shield in avengers is made of vibranium thanks to tony starks father, hence they have already set the stage because he had to have gotten the vibranium from the only source on the planet and you can only harvest vibranium at the allowance of the current wakandan black panther. He also fights the fantastic four to prove their worthiness and on top of it, storm and black panther have a fling in their teenage years. MAKES WAY-MORE-SENSE

My first thoughts were for them to go with Chiwetel Ejiofor, but given the age that T'Challa has to be, Mid 20's, I don't really know who to think of. And this is going to be racist as frig, but he CAN'T be too light of skin tone.

I know Hollywood is big on keeping their us blacks looking light bright, but this can't be the case for T'Challa. Hopefully they stick to the formula they have been using for the Avengers. Semi lightheartedness with a raucous of spectacular violence & CGI effects

Right...because Marvel has done such a questionable job of handling the rest of the characters that they have made movies of so far. I mean, we all know your directing skills and writing capabilities far outstretch those at Marvel...

Jebus, if you dont want to see it because he is black then just say so, but a character that has been around 50+ years says otherwise and I think Marvel agrees. I cant wait to see people complain when they announce Doctor Strange near the end of this year for 2014.
