What happens when the star of one of your most popular shows exits stage left?
It looks like BET is about to find out.
On Wednesday, Tia Mowry – the lead character on one of BET's most-watched shows, “The Game," announced she would not be returning next season, leaving a huge void in a storyline built largely around her.
And, adding possible insult to injury, rumor has it her husband on the show - another equally pivotal character played by Pooch Hall - may be leaving too. (He has yet to make a formal announcement.)
The actress, who has played Melanie Barnett on the scandalous football-centered drama since it debuted on The CW in 2006 (and was later picked up by BET), informed fans of the bad news Wednesday via Twitter.
“Just wanted to let all my fans know that I will not be returning to 'The Game' for season 6,” she said. “It was an incredible run and I had lots of fun."
Though that was the extent of the 33-year-old’s official comment on the matter, a source close to the actress reportedly told the Hollywood Reporter that her departure was a mutual decision between Mowry and the network.
BET has not yet commented on the matter, though it renewed the series for a sixth season back in April.
But this certainly won’t be the last you see of Mowry: the actress and her pregnant twin, Tamera Mowry-Housley, have their own reality show on the Style Network, "Tia & Tamera."
Tia Mowry also released her book, “Oh Baby!,” on Tuesday, and will reportedly star in the upcoming ABC Family holiday special, “The Mistle-Tones.”
