Tupac's hologram might go on tour

The virtual version of Tupac Shakur might soon take the show on the road.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the technology that made a 2-D illusion of the late rapper appear to perform at Coachella over the weekend created so much chatter that Coachella headliners Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg are reportedly planning to talk over the logistics of a tour. (And as it's a  2-D image and not 3-D, it's technically not a hologram.)

Tupac, and other virtual versions of artists we want to see on tour

One idea, the paper cites, is to do a smaller tour with just Dre, Snoop and virtual Pac, with another thought being to go big and include other hip-hop stars like Eminem, 50 Cent and Wiz Khalifa, who also performed during Dre and Snoop's Coachella set on Sunday. However, a rep for Dr. Dre tells CNN that any talk about a potential tour is "premature."

Digital Domain Media Group created Pac's eerily accurate virtual image, and the company's chief creative officer explained to the WSJ that Pac's "performance" wasn't based on archival footage or found footage, and instead was an illusion.

The company that projected and staged the image of Tupac for Coachella attendees was the San Diego-based AV Concepts, MTV reports.

"We worked with Dr. Dre on this, and it was Dre's vision to bring this back to life,"  AV Concepts president Nick Smith told MTV. "It was his idea from the very beginning and we worked with him and his camp to utilize the technology to make it come to life.... You can take their likenesses and voice and... take people that haven't done concerts before or perform music they haven't sung and digitally re-create it."

The reaction to the technology has been mixed: Some were awe-struck by Tupac's ghostly image, while others were disturbed by the idea of the artist being "resurrected" to entertain from beyond the grave nearly 16 years after his death. But concerned fans may be happy to know that Tupac's mother, Afeni Shakur, is reportedly pleased with how virtual Pac turned out.

According to TMZ, Dr. Dre first sought Afeni's approval before proceeding with virtual Tupac's Coachella show, and that Afeni found the performance by the virtual version of her son to be "thrilling," but also "bittersweet."

I say to you, I certainly get annoyed while people consider worries that they just do not recognize about. You managed to hit the nail upon the highest and outlined out the entire thing without having side effect , other folks can take a signal. Will probably be again to get more. Thanks

... I found this hologram to be awesome and bittersweet, all u haters talking traash go get hit by a car or something terrible, tupac will always be a legend, and greatly missed. However i do believe that holograms need to be made only of ppl or artist that have passed away biggie, pac, marley, and many many others, not of those artist that are alive, just my opinion, but yes the outfit lil outdated but i believe is pac was here today he still be reppin the khakis and the timbos...yeeeee... we miss you pac!!!!!!

  13. BRING EM BACK.

I think this is a great idea, he did have an album resurection i kn (I'm know i spelled it wrong grammar police I dont give a "gosh darn")I think if MJ's brothers can tour and get money after they have been musically dead for decades after the death of MJ, or if Bobby Brown can make a semi come back back (Iord save us) because his EX wife died, A generation of teens and young adults listened to his music, (i was young when he was alive, I'm 26 now and enjoyed his music as a teenager and still do now (Im a white female) but if they can have lip syncing on shows like American Idol, The Super Bowl, (I think The Voice even had a little country girl whose mouth stopped but the singing kept going) If they can auto tune and fake voices, have computers sing and rap, Why can't they do something like this for Pac, he wasn't a Thug, he just played the part and it got him killed, he was a great lyricist as well as a deep poet (look up any of his non music work. ) whether you LIKE, LOVE or HATE Rap music, or even don't like Pac, This is an interesting concept and I for 1 would love to see how something like this could work out, he*l it could be a great illusion with much to offer for his fans past and present, it may bomb out and be a horrible job done, but know one will know until we see it, and Pac having been such an "Inspiration" to many, even more so after death for some reason (I never understand that with artist) but ac is a great canadate for something like this.... Ok Grammar Police and racist, and people who dislike tech stuff or rap music have at me. <3

A dead person is dead... yes. But a dead rapper who is making money still will always make money, while a nobody like yourself can only make money while you are alive. Get the picture? The world moves on and people remember Tupac. When you are gone, no one will care about you.

Stating the fact that he's dead is cliche. The fact that you have no other argument other than "rap is cr@p" or "Tupac is dead" is just showing that you have nothing else going for you.

This statement shows how immeasurably stupid rap fans are. You are actually suggesting that it would be better to be a a dead rapper than a live me because a dead rapper can make more money?

Note to idiot, dead rappers don't make any money. People who sponge off of dead rappers make money.

Let me ask (yes, it is pronounced ask not aks) you a few questions.

Who will SPEND more money this year, ME OR TUPAC?

Who will enjoy SPENDING as much money as they want this year, ME OR TUPAC?

Who will be rotting in the ground this year, ME OR TUPAC?

It doesn't matter whether you will rot in the ground this year or next, or 40 years from now... you will get there eventually. Tupac just got there before you, but of course he was around long before you were, so that's not a very valid comparison.

That's like saying "Oh, George Washington is dead, but I'm not!" Valid statement but a moot point.

You assume I'm a fan of rap. I could've said the same thing about Lady Gaga making lots of money, but I am not a follower or supporter of hers. You are correct that others make the money off of Tupac, not Tupac himself. However, it sounds to me like you're just bitter because someone actually became popular and had some success (despite getting shot in the end).

You still haven't shown us what your taste in music is. That shows me that you are a coward only capable of analyzing other people's arguments to fit your own needs.

"However, it sounds to me like you're just bitter because someone actually became popular and had some success (despite getting shot in the end)."

Wrong again, again. I am not bitter or jealous. How on earth could anyone be jealous of Tupac. He's dead for christ sakes. Any one who is above ground has it better than him. I can absolutely guarantee that I will make and spend more money than Tupak did in his lifetime. His mother may still be making money off of him, but he is not making or spending a single red cent. He's dead.

"You still haven't shown us what your taste in music is. That shows me that you are a coward only capable of analyzing other people's arguments to fit your own needs"

Wrong again, again and again. I posted my musical tastes on the first "rap" thread the very first time I was asked. But to clarify, I listen primarily to jazz and blues. I am warming up to some of the current "lounge" music. I think the Freestylers are doing some interesting stuff mixing jazz hip hop and dance beats. Sometimes I listen to a little classical. I don't listen to much pop, rap or rock music anymore because it is pretty devoid of any creativity. Last rock show I went to was Kings X and Porcupine Tree. Been to a bunch of Jazz and blues shows since then. Best I've seen recently is Joe Bonnamassa (sp).

Rap is cr@p to you because:

      1) You can't understand why people speaking instead of singing counts as music.
Here's the answer to your complaint as shown by Dictionary.com.

      mu·sic   /ˈmyuzɪk/ Show Spelled[myoo-zik] Show IPA
      noun
      1. an art of sound in time that expresses ideas and emotions in significant forms through the elements of rhythm, melody, harmony, and color.
      2. the tones or sounds employed, occurring in single line (melody) or multiple lines (harmony), and sounded or to be sounded by one or more voices or instruments, or both.
      3. musical work or compositions for singing or playing.
      4. the written or printed score of a musical composition.
      5. such scores collectively.

      2) You don't like it.
Good for you, please share with us what you consider to be good music... or are you like your pal "derp" who are too cowardly to post in fear of getting made fun of?

      3) You can't understand how rappers make so much money producing such "bad" music.
Maybe you should try it yourself, or do something that will make you money instead of complaining about it on CNN.

You and derp should go into a room and make love with Observer. Three losers!

tupac's hologram is like Auto-Tune for video. Cr@p will always be cr@p, no matter how much $ you make. leave tupac in the grave where he belongs.

If "cr@p" sells then why aren't you getting on it? Do you get paid to troll the blogs?

Call it selling out all you want, but I don't think trolling on a blog or flaming someone for making money is any better. That takes as much talent as the genre you make fun of.
