Will Ferrell faced not one, but two challenges while filming his latest comedy, “Casa de mi Padre."
In the movie, Ferrell plays Armando Alvarez, who, along with his brother, winds up in a feud with a Mexican drug lord when they try to save their father's ranch. To pull it off, throughout the film, Ferrell spoke entirely in another language.
"I thought it would be so interesting and funny, [and that's] where the genesis of the idea came from, was to actually commit to an entire movie in Spanish. I thought, 'I don't think you've ever seen that before.' At least for someone from [an] American comedy to do that."
And when Ferrell says he committed, he means it. He's not fluent, but it wouldn't be surprising if moviegoers assumed that he was.
"I figured there's two ways to go," the 44-year-old actor says of learning the language. "You can speak poorly, and then the joke's over pretty quickly. But if you commit [to] authentically speaking Spanish as well as I could - knowing full well that I'll never sound exactly like a native speaker - but if I could surprise the Latino audience with my commitment to it you'd not only win them over but they would find it funny. And it works for an English speaking audience, anyway. So that was the huge challenge of the film, but I'm so proud of it."
And as for his second challenge? He said farewell to his body double, choosing instead to do his own - rather gratuitous - nude scenes.
"I knew I had to do [it] just because it was too funny to pass up!" he said. "All that was written in the script was that Armando and Sonia (played by Genesis Rodriguez), they finally kiss and they passionately make out, and then it is the longest montage of butts ever."
