'All-American Muslim' won't have second season

TLC's look into the everyday lives of Michigan-based Muslims was a short one. The network confirms that "All-American Muslim" won't return for a second season.

The eight-episode docu-series followed five families in Dearborn, Michigan, depicting how they balance their faith and customs with their average American lifestyle.

TLC didn't offer more information as to why the series won't return, although some cast members told the Detroit Free Press that they were told the decision was made based on ratings.

When it premiered in November, "All-American Muslim" attracted 1.7 million viewers, according to the Hollywood Reporter, only to see those ratings tumble to 900,000 viewers for the season finale.

"All-American Muslim" was also at the center of controversy when critics like the Florida Family Association claimed that the reality show was "propaganda that riskily hides the Islamic agenda's clear and present danger to American liberties and traditional values."

The retailer Lowe's pulled its advertising from the program in December following what the company said was "a significant amount of communication from every perspective possible" regarding the show.

"Individuals and groups have strong political and social views on this topic, and this program became a lightning rod for many of those views," Lowe's said at the time. "As a result we did pull our advertising on this program. We believe it best to defer to communities, individuals and groups to discuss and consider such issues of importance."

Despite backlash, Lowe's stood firm on its decision, explaining, "We did not pull our ads based solely on the complaints or emails of any one group. It is never our intent to alienate anyone. Lowe's values diversity of thought in everyone, including our employees and prospective customers."

OMG! As a muslim woman from Turkey I visited the U.S. several times and studied there for 2 years. People stared at me everywhere but I never took them as hostile but more like curious. Reading the comments here....now I know why. I can't believe American people could be so hateful inside. What is this? A new age for the KKK?

All you ppl that are defending Islam should be shot for treason . I have never ever stomped on any religion, race or political beleif b-4 but i have 2 say that Islam wants every 1 who is not muslium to die. They know tht they will never beat us on a battle field so they p;an ontaking over from within using our freedoms and beleifs against us. Take a good hard look at BriTan,France and the swiss they have just about lost their identiy just give it another 8 to 10 years and Islam will be running their governments. Thats not to say they are against killing people who disagree with them .DOES ANYONE REMBER 9-11!!!!! They are not peaceful people just ask that cartoonist from the Netherlands or ask the creaters of South Park .. So STOP BEING SO LIBERAL AND UNDERSTANDING when it comes to Islam because they are not understanding of you no matter how much they smile and say they are a "Religion of peace" YOU ARE ALL BEING HOOD WINKED. STOP ISLAM IN AMERICA B-4 IT'S 2 LATE!!!

Considering there are about 2 billion Muslims worldwide, 10-15 million of them here in the US, and growing; considering that we are pretty ignorant judging from average American's comments in the media, this show was entertaining and very educational!!!! My entire family and whole lot of friends were watching it..... I think as usual a certain group forced closure of this great program!!

I am beyond happy this show is cancelled. I am an American Muslim who was mortified by this show. This show represented only one particular cultural background of Muslims living in America. They did not represent "All American Muslims" and when I tried to make such a comment on TLC's fb page they were removed. There are Americans who converted to Islam. There are second and third generation Albanians, Bosnians, Latinos, Africans, etc who converted or were born into the religion. If this show sought to actually succeed and be interesting there would have been more diversity than three women who were revealing clothes and have tattoos and drink alcohol in an attempt to make us look "normal" or "all american." Sure have one of those women there, but three? Come on. American women, Christian American women, are not all like that therefore there should be women from across the spectrum of being religious.
This show not only made TLC look bad, but American muslims over all. Good grief. Some of you thought it was interesting? Why because you are still closed minded into thinking that all muslims are grenade launching, hijacking suns of guns? Pick up a book. Go to your local masjid because I bet ya there is one near ya. Go talk to an actual American muslim. Who pumps your gas? Chances are they are from the middle east or Pakistan. Go look around you. There are millions of muslims, but not all of us stand out like sore thumbs.

P.S. to those of you who still think Obama is a muslim, for Gods sake grow up and read about the guy. He is Christian. He was raised by a white Christian mother. He got married in a church.

I'm an American living in a Muslim country (for my husband's job) and most of the people I meet here (mostly Muslims, although some Christians too) are kind, generous, loving people. I love my country of origin and am very proud to be American but that doesn't mean I have to hate non-Americans. We must learn to separate the crazy extremists (read: terrorists) from the rest of the population. Not all Muslims are anti-American terrorists in the same way that not all Germans are nazis. Why is this so difficult for people to understand?

I'm guessing you are living in a compound that it separated from the country and is somewhat safe because you are buffered and your husband's company wouldn't send him or you there if it wasn't. Have you traveled throughout the country? Are you allowed to? Would you still be alive if you did? The muslims hide behind the cloak of religion to justify murder of non-muslims. Why is that so difficult for you to understand.

The terrorist who took so many lives were terrorist who just happened to be Muslim. To say that all Muslims are terrorist is pure ignorance. That's like saying all white people have slaves. That way of thinking is the exact reason this show was put on the air. Too bad some people are too racist and ignorant to see that.

Let's face it. The show was a yawner. Religion wasn't the problem. TLC wasn't getting good ratings so they gave up on it. End of story.

It's the same thing with "The Little Couple" who are certainly nice people. But after the first episode or two, you're thinking "Why am I watching this?" I quit watching it because it didn't hold my interest.

Of course, TLC is now pushing the "My Secret Obsession" and other freak shows. So the other end of the spectrum is not that great either.

In 25-50 years this country will be totally unrecognizable to the Europeans, African Americans who were exploited and the Chinese who built it with their bare hands and backs. And that's assuming we don't go bankrupt first or that china doesn't overtake us or that Iran doesn't attack us as they have said they will(aside from calling Israel a cancerous tumor which must be cut out, Iran leaders have also said-" a world without America is possible". John Adams once said something along the lines of (regarding about black slaves) that if they're here they're Americans. No other requirement needed. Now that has changed since 1776 but sometimes I wonder it can't be true again. No more illegal alien problem.

It's a pity to see an interesting show go down the drain. Americans are afraid of muslims but go to the middle east (if you are white and blue eyes or even look American/western) you will be hated. The fact is that the "conservative" people on the U.S. are scared of muslims. Muslims are mad at the U.S. for its monopoly on the oil industry and the amout of hatred they recieve from us. Also "religion" is a huge factor. You know when you believe in a religion you become close minded and end up like the party of no. I wish the best of luck for all muslims in the U.S. becuase we are treating them just like what the Nazi's did to the jews but in a more civil manner. Also remember this is a TV network! All they want is ratings! So don't think that the removal of their over drama add-on shows are because of personal issues. (remember they want money)

Let's see. If we all assimilate to the United States, does this mean I have to give up pizza, spaghetti, lasagna, tacos, burritos, or chinese food. Do we stop celebrating Columbus Day, St. Patricks Day, Cinco de Mayo, etc... Contrary to what some on this sight seems to believe, when individuals come to the United States, they don't simply drop everything that they had in their home country (i.e. their food, their accent, their language, their beliefs). Most of the time assimilation takes place over several generations. The first generation still retain much of their heritage, the second generation shares both the parents heritage and the culture of the United States. By the third generation, most families have been fully assimilated into American culture.

@Iroy... the Catholic Church didn't build America, the Protestants that ran away from England did. Thats 1. #2 England used to use America (formerly known as the new world) as a punishment for prisoners. #3 This country was built by people running from other countries for religious freedoms, slaves, Asians who built the railroads, and people just looking to start over etc. And history says that Moores (now know as Muslims) were residing here when history was taking place in America.
So for anyone to sit here and think that All races and religions DIDN'T build this country... pure idiocy.
The TV show lost interest for a lot of people because they put it on during a very late hour in the middle of the work week.
Had they put the show on during primetime, we would be looking at another season.
I'm Roman Catholic and was interested to see how they dealt with holidays geared towards us instead of them. Or what they considered traditional.
It would have been better off as a mini series that then became a running show.

I think there is a huge misconception about Muslims. The only difference between a Muslim and a Catholic is the belief in God. Otherwise our books include the same things. People are confusing religion with tradition. Arranged marriages are traditional. There many other cultures and religions that practice that. America is made up of people from all over the world. So this comment is for Freddy, America does not have a specific religion, and if it did we would be following the Indian religion and culture because they were here before us!

      @ ash
You make some good points. However a big difference between Muslims and Catholics is that Catholics are not killing around the world in the name of their god. A major problem with your ‘Indian concept” is there is no ONE ‘Indian’ culture. They were little more than scattered tribes often warring with each other and taking slaves. Having different traditions and in some cases different gods.

Actually, Islam sits pretty squarely between Orthodox Judaism and Christianity. Like Orthodox Judaism, Islam has a sacred law and a strict concept of monotheism, while like Christianity Islam recognizes Jesus as the Messiah and also maintains a strong spiritual aspect (called tasawwuf).
