As usual with "Modern Family," the best laid plans don't always work out, and Wednesday night's episode was no exception.
Phil's fun Leap Day plans were threatened when he realized that all of the women in his family were on the same cycle: "It happened. Satan's trifecta. The day I most dreaded had fallen on the day I most loved."
With Claire, Haley and Alex on edge, Phil was worried he would say or do the wrong thing. Of course, Luke soon gave away the game, and Claire pointed out, "Doesn't he know that tiptoeing around someone like they're crazy, actually makes them crazy?"
In the meantime, Gloria hoped that Jay would be a little more on edge, after noticing how often he refused to come to her defense. But then again, she appreciated it in comparison with her ex's behavior.
That also didn't mean Gloria couldn't come to his defense. She slugged a man after he got testy with Jay: "Nobody calls him grandpa!" (As Luke pointed out, "I do!")
But if anyone was on edge, it was this week's MVP, Mitchell, who freaked out once he realized that a "Wizard of Oz" "10th birthday" party for the Leap Day birthday boy was a bad idea: "A month after the most devastating twister to ever hit Cam's hometown, I throw a party based on gay cinema's most famous tornado."
The solution for everyone's problems turned out to be Phil's original plan: a trip to a carnival (complete with Phil learning trapeze artistry).
