Celine Dion on Houston: Drugs took over her dreams

Celine Dion is facing criticism Monday after an interview with "Good Morning America" in which she alleged that drug use "took over" Whitney Houston's life.

Dion, who called in to the show to speak with "GMA's" Robin Roberts, began by reiterating how much Houston, who died Saturday, influenced her English career.

She then launched into a lengthy response about how Houston's story - and that of other stars like Elvis Presley, Marilyn Monroe, Amy Winehouse and Michael Jackson - scares her.

"Whitney has been an amazing inspiration for me...It's just very unfortunate that drugs and, I don't know, bad people, or bad influence, took over," the 43-year-old singer said.

"It took over her dreams, it took over love and motherhood. When you think about Elvis Presley and Marilyn Monroe and Michael Jackson and Amy Winehouse...To get into drugs like that for whatever reason, because of the stress and bad influence, what happens?...You have responsibilities as a mother, and then something happens and it destroys everything."

That thought of such a trajectory frightens the mom of three, making her "scared of show business," she said.

"There's something that happens that I don't understand, and that's why I'm so scared," Dion said. "I'm scared of show business, I'm scared of drugs, I'm scared of hanging out, and that's why I don't do parties and hanging out, and that's why I'm not part of show business. We have to be afraid."

Houston's music "will live forever," Dion said when Roberts tried to transition into a conversation about Houston's legacy, but added, "it's not enough. Time after time, we lose people...Taking pills to go perform, taking pills to wake up and taking pills to go to bed...It's so unfortunate. I've always said, you have to have fun, and do music, and never be part of show business, because you don't know what it's going to get you into."

"How come it's stronger than all that, stronger than family and motherhood and love itself?"

Those answers had many on Twitter critiquing Dion, with @cennay tweeting the morning news program to say, "Celine Dion's comments/opinions regarding Whitney Houston were inappropriate and insensitive. Who is she to pass judgement on anyone?"

Added @zidek123, "How arrogant, pompous and rude of Celine [D]ion. Tell her to save her drug abuse sermon until [toxicology] reports are complete."

Indeed, the cause of Houston's death is not known. An autopsy was completed Sunday but toxicology results are pending.

@MarkWGaither weighed in, "Robin Roberts tried to save Celine Dion from herself on GMA. Alas, some disasters are too great to hold back. Buried under an avalanche ..."

Others simply felt unease watching the interview. "Felt uncomfortable after listening 2 Celine Dion's interview about Whitney (on GMA)," wrote @KimLeeJewelry. "[J]ust my personal opinion. Praying for Whitney's family."

On Saturday, Dion told CNN that she was in shock over Houston's death.

"Whitney was such an amazing artist," Dion said Saturday. "When I started my English career, I wanted to be like her. I loved her so much. My prayers go out to her daughter and to all of her family."

The problem with Americans or infact the whole world is that people don't want to know the truth. They want you to tell them the opposite of what they look. Its a pity that whitney is no more with us,but her legacy will last forever. So celine deon, i give you kudos for telling the truth.Drugs is the major contributing factor to her death even though the toxicology report is still pending.

It's real funny how people pass judgement on others. We ALL have our short comings, skeletons, addictions...anything that makes us NOT PERFECT! Substance abuse is something she may have done BUT who she was is what matters, what counts, and how she should be remembered! I would love to know if Mrs dion EVER tried to reach out and help her or get her help! My goodness, Whitney wasn't layed to rest and she was popping off with her judgements dialog. That was DISRESPECTFUL on all levels!!!!!! Just plain wicked. Whether its true or not IT WAS NOT HER PLACE TO SAY THOSE THINGS! JUST PLANE NASTY!
"May light perpetual shine upon her now and always" Take your rest Whitney..you will ALWAYS be remembered for who you were and your gift of voice which No One can be compared to!

I think Celine was somehow right, but maybe she is been asked in an apropriate moment, and she should have waited until official announcment of the cause of whitney's death, but there is a truth when someone's death reason is kept secret I think, so it means something was wrong with that.
Celine is somehow true because there were others who dies cause of drugs

WE SOMETIMES FORGET CELEBRITIES ARE PEOPLE TOO! THEY ARE SOMEONE'S DAUGHTER, SISTER OR MOTHER. REGARDLESS OF THE FACTS OF THE MATTER AND THE ASSUMPTIONS THAT CAN BE MADE, TOO MUCH WAS SAID TOO SOON. News Flash!!! No one is perfect and we all struggle with something. Our lives are just not hung out to dry in the media like celebrities. Let the family bury their loved one, before you go on national TV without an official autopsy report making comments about someones death. That's just plain common sense. CD was asked how Whitney influenced her career. But somehow, the interview became about CD and how scared she is , blah, blah. No one is in denial here. We all know know what she said was true, but the timing reeks self-righteousness, disrespect, and just plain attention seeking. Again , not denying what was said, just questioning the timing of the statements. I have never listened to CE's music, but I thought she had a little more tact that was was displayed here.

Celine said nothing wrong, she never judged whitney houston but stated the fact that music industry does not care about its artists. Whitney's voice was damaged long time ago due to the hard drugs. Even though she got over the drug problems according to her and her friends, by taking pills that was responsible for her death didn't prove whitney was doing great in her life. If you read every thing about her medications in the drug handbook, it's so serious and nothing to take lightly. Celine is just stating that people close to Whitney have failed in their responsibility in taking care of her. It was whitney that made wrong choices that eventually destroyed her, but her loved ones needed to take drastic measurements to make sure that this sort of thing never happened. Medications are not the answer and surprised that neither her loved ones or the music industry helped her out with all the money and resources they had. The music industry used whitney as a product and the only solution to whitney's problem was to make more albums and make her to go on tours which did nothing to help her. No one close to whitney knew the tireless commitment that it takes in whitney's case to persevere in the midst of her problems.

I agree with Deline, she spoke th truth, and why people continue not to want to accept the truth is beyond me. Whitney has been dying just like michael Jackson, for years. The body is not built to handle all of these drugs, and eventually it just shuts down. Whether it be an over-dose or not, everybody knows that whitney had struggled with drugs for years, and it wasn't Bobby Browns fault either, I beg to disagree with that also. And any body that has ever had any kind of voice lessons, knows that the voice has the potential to lower as you age also, but it will do so even swifter if you are a heavy drinker and smoker, and there is nothing that a doctor can do to correct the damage. You have got to LOVE YOURSELF enough to steer away from this kind of lifestyle, because it will eventially KILL you. And of course I feel that these celebrities need to stop allowing that industry to distance them from their families too. Being separated from your family is what all abusers do.

Celine , you have to do what's best for you as a mother and artist and if that means staying away from the negative than by all means do so ! Your voice speaks for itself and no one can take that away from you !!

It is my own opinion everyone has a addiction of some sort and many addictions can kill you. In regards to Whitney Houston, if you watched Bobby Brown's Show I believe it was on Bravo, when Whitney was married to him, it was obvious that WH had a problem with some form of substance addiction. For those people who put her down and say she gets what she deserves, I find you to be heartless. That is what is wrong with Americans, always judging and putting down people. Obviously, addictions can over take a person, I know my mother died of Alcholism. She fought it but it got the best of her. R.I.P. Whitney, you are in a much better place. . .

Celine isn't passing judgement. She not only hit the nail on the head where issues of addiction are concerned, but spoke honestly about her own fears being in 'the business'. Hats off to her for being true to herself and keeping her priorities in check. Regardless of whether or not you like her or her music, you gotta give her credit for that!

Whitney was a celebrity. It is a given for the media to talk about their ENTIRE lives, not just a portion of it so I don't see why her friends and family are so upset. She may have been clean for 3 years, as reports say, but it appears she picked up or continued another habit and that was alcohol & pills. Plus, drugs do their damage over years, especially cocaine.

I believe Whitney was clean of illicit drugs. I believe a combo of pills and alcohol killed her.

We must discuss this because we need to find solutions to prevent this from happening and burying so many young artists!!! The truly talented are leaving us too soon!

This person named Whitney she is no different than any other person who put a needle to there arms or put that glass "Dick" to there mouth. She had plenty of time and obvious resources to help her but she choose the easy way. If this was the guy down on the corner what would the world be saying. I loved me some Whitney back in the day. There's one thing no one is saying that I don't understand – Why was she partying at the Grammy festivities in the first place if she was in outpatient rehab? That was the last place she needed to be. Certainly not partying in Hollywood and with her daughter in tow. Were the people around her who were such close friends and family in denial? Why would she subject herself to this type of environment if she was trying to get well? I am tired of hearing the people who were partying with her act like it was OK and saying "she was just fine, I didn't see anything unusual." It is unusual to party and be in rehab, HELLO?? Who told her the truth? I would like to hear the commentary of those who were really trying to help her.

Whitney's death is sad, no doubt. But really, her song died years ago. She killed her voice, her career, and then herself. So while we lost her body on Saturday, truthfully, she died years ago when she chose drugs over life. We were never again going to be privy to the star that shone in the 80's and 90's. I am not a big fan of Celine – well, I wasn't until I heard her this morning on GMA. She was refreshingly candid and spot on. Good for her for calling it like it is.

When you are an addict and are getting high, nothing else is more important. THIS IS WHY DRUGS ARE BAD FOR YOU. Even though the reports are not in as yet, I hope drugs did not play a part in Houston's death. But on the other hand she did do rehab three times. So the addiction to the drugs and its culture are very strong. I do not blame Celine for being afraid of the drug culture aspect of show business. It has taken away many many talented and artistic people. And will continue to do so until something is done about it. Until then, the question becomes, "who is next?"

I am so confused by this. Though she struggles with a language barrier, it is clear Celine Dion is not slamming, nor judging Whitney Houston, who she has always publicly adored, but rather the industry. She is hurt, frustrated, devastated, and quite frankly angry that its bad influences keep claiming the lives of those she so deeply respects, such as Whitney Houston... And all too recently Michael Jackson. She is scared of the industry and its power, and pleading with everyone to face the real issues. How sad it is that her words are being so misunderstood.

We all have sin and come short of the glory of God. Celine Dion is poor t**** that made it through her old daddy figure husband. What about her eating disorder and binge eating – she doesn't think anyone notice? We all have something in our closet – we are not perfect; but only part of a perfect piece. All I can say is – no one deserve to bury their child; but at least Bobby Kristina had 18 years with her mother. I thank God that Demi Moore and others have a second chance and Lindsey Lohan, Brittany Spears – aging is not the end of your life.

Actually, I think Celine was right on the money. Hollywood and the music business obviously need to be shocked and shocked often before they get the message that DRUGS KILL! Telling the world that she is afraid of that lifestyle, that atmosphere was NOT disrespectful of Whitney. She was expressing how easy it is when living in the midst of all that to get caught up in it and lose everything! Actually, I'm furious...with Whitney, with her mother and with Bobby Brown! Whitney knew, the first time she took drugs she KNEW what she was playing with. She grew up watching her mother be part of Elvis' back-up group. Her godmother is Dionne Warwick, who had her own problems with drugs. WAKE UP, PEOPLE. If you lay across the railroad tracks, the train is going to kill you! It doesn't matter if she had a ounce of alcohol and pills in her system which may have caused her death, she is human and we all make mistakes. Her problems never hurt anyone personally that is slandering her, only person Whitney hurt was Whitney. And that still does not make her a bad person or make her death any less shocking. I pray all that hates her so much when your time comes people don't find your skeletons and use them to kick you when your dead.

I guess those who tweeted about Celines statements are not aware of Ms Houstons past? Here is a fact for them to consider before judging Celine... Ms Houston did abuse her body... she admitted it, she went for treatment for it and then she ignored what she learned in treatment. Thursday she was seen drunk, and dripping blood from her arms and legs.. she had fallen off the wagon while her "friends" celebrated her being drunk with them. Celine is correct is what she said... even if she slipped in the tub and drowned... her life was a terrible example.

The only people who would take celine's words as blah blah blah are the one's who don't want hear even though its the truth. But everyone wants to find answers to why she died so soon. People close to whitney have been saying "she's fine, looks good, doing great etc.." and then she dies. Her substance abuse is common knowledge but people don't know what's the reason for the pills that she had and the drinking. I've seen her interviews regarding her upcoming movie and she was looking good, what happened. Celine is reacting the same way and she never disrespected whitney, just trying to make sense of the situation. You can't judge her harshly for her comments even though it's not the right time to make those statements.

Whitney was on drugs, she was an addict, she was sick – drug addiction is a sickness. Its not the kind of "choice" we make its an addiction. Trying to overcome an addiction if you are lucky is a blessing but you will alway be an addict – recovering addict. Ms. Dion is right – she was hooked on drugs. She loved her daughter but the addiction was so great. Noone can say anything about Whitney not loving her child or her very own self. I am sure she wished she was not an addict. If she is or is not found to have drugs in her system that is besides the point. A wonderful blessing to our lives is now gone and may the Lord bring her peace and my her family/friends and the world keep on loving her. If you know someone that is an addict – love them because one day they may find their way and if not – God has a better place for them. Peace and love Whitney and family.

That is a load of bull! It is a choice! The first time you put a needle in your arm, or cocaine up your nose, it is a choice. Whitney had NO excuse. She was not some little, sheltered farm girl. She grew up in the shadow of showbusiness and saw what drugs did to Elvis, to her godmother Dionne and many, many others. Whitney was arrogant to think she could play with fire and not get burned, and she was arrogant again each time she came out of rehab and got back on the 'dragon'. She paid with her voice and, ultimately with her life, but the biggest tragedy of all is that her own daughter has already been in rehab. And so the curse continues....great job, Whitney...

I love Celine and I loved Whitney.. music is a gift that is shared but I could not support and purchase Whitney after seeing her spiral. The reports aren't complete but her life was so sad to watch.. a Queen on stage, and now she is gone. With all of the resourses... money.. why can't the rich clean up? I hope nobody ever comments on the trailer park mother that lives her life the way she does.. doped up, babies and living off the system. DRUGS SUCK

I applaud Celine Dion for speaking the truth. People get so darn offended when someone speaks the truth and is up front and forthright. Celine Dion has a way of saying things that always show how classy, intelligent and caring she is. She said what many wanted to say. I was shocked by Whitney Houston's death and very saddened. It's so horribly sad that she was in such despair. I hope she is at peace....she was loved, admired and appreciated by millions. I feel so sorry for her daughter, only 18, to lose her Mother. I can only hope that she is surrounded by healthy love and support.

Celine – thank you for your thoughtful and intelligent comments.

Celine is obviously saying this to warn other young stars to not fall into the same lifestyle as Whitney. Why condemn Celine for saying what is already out in the open. She may not have died from drugs- and Celine did not say she did- but her multi-year use of drugs took away her voice, her ability to perform, her self-respect, and her ability to parent responsibly. So I don't know how anyone can differ with Cilene's observation that drugs took over her dreams. Anyone who does has their head in the sand. Celine and Whitney were the two greatest voices of my lifetime and I have every CD made by both of them. But they did make different choices in their lives and Celine was right to be afraid of the Hollywood star lifestyle, And she's right to warn others about it too. If anything is to be learned from Whitney's life and for her death not to have been in vain, it's to serve as a warning to other young stars and non-stars that drug use is a path to nowhere.

Celine was not being mean or cruel at all. She is concerned about what happens to her fellow performers that makes then choose a drugged life over all other things. Sadly she is so right about Whitney not being the mother she should have been. How could she have when admittedly on drugs. I know she loved her daughter, but I bet Bobbie has been hurt by her parents lifestyle. Judging is when you condemn someone or something. Celine, did not condemn Whitney only stated the truth. Good for you Celine.

What happened and as a result we have lost her (Whitney).vThis is a subject that need not be overlooked. This is a huge problem in Hollywood and America as a whole, that needs to be discussed. Her's a Townhall meeting. So often after every natural disaster you have celebrities getting together to raise money and come to the aid. Well, the same should be done in their community. There is a serious drug use problem in Hollywood of pandemic proprtions that needs to be dealt with. Hell, yes the drugs took over and eventually took her life. I'm mad, mad as hell that she's gone. Celene should be praised for speaking the truth. We've all heard of the rock & roll lifestyle, and we all know what that means. And show business puts tremendous pressure on performers to live that lifestyle, or live up to its reputation. Sadly, Whitney and those who have gone before her–not just Elvis Presley and Marilyn Monroe and Michael Jackson and Amy Winehouse, but also Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix as well–are lionized by fans as martyrs of that lifestyle, not victims of it. An official cause of Whitney's death remains to be released, but given Whitney's known, proven history of drug abuse, we have to admit that the rock & roll lifestyle is destructive and wrong and that living fast and dying young is not romantic or heroic and does not make you a martyr, but just a corpse withering to dust in a grave.

Addiction is a disease, its a hard CHOICE to decide to get sober, its a harder CHOICE to stay sober. I know because I am grateful to be able to work hard at a wonderfully sober existence for the last 36 years. But what society seems to miss is most overdoses are not from illicit drugs and that while people -rich & poor – die from overdoses ever single day, the prescriptions for these poisons comes from doctors and pharmaceutical companies as they laugh all the way to bank and never ever take any responsibility. They do make drugs that benefit us like antibiotics but those are not the drugs that enhance their bottom line. Yes it is a story we hear too often and it does get tiring but they are human beings and I would have the same empathy for ordinary people but we never hear about them dying. Although Ms. Houston had a history of drug use, no one knows yet what caused the death.

I've always found it interesting why some superstars can handle fame and others can't. Let's face it – all the top guns must be driven and talented to make it, why do some handle it (say Celine, Barbra Streisand, Madonna, Cher), others wobble but pull through (Mariah, Britney) and others end up in tragedy. I am glad Celine is addressing this, and she is not being disrespectful to Whitney in any way.
Celine says she is scared of the "scene" and drugs – that makes celebs no different from normal folk – when someone loses that fear, it is much easier to take the first steps that could eventually lead to addiction.

We all know she had a issues with drugs and alcohol its not a hidden fact, however if you read closely to the evidence being stated, Whitney was in a tub of water with her legs up, who takes a bath like that? The tray in the bathroom had no alcohol glasses on it, next there were conversations on the phone between Whitney and family 30-60 minutes before she was found, I know that if she had consumed alcohol and taken too many pills she would have been more than groggy and functional, so look at the facts involved and not your judge mental opinions and take into consideration her daughters has access to the internet and social networking as well.

Even if she had finally stopped using illegal drugs, it still couldn't undo the damage already done to her body from years of abuse. Celine hit the nail on the head and while the pain may still be a little too raw for Whitney's fans to hear, she spoke the truth. As far as Bobbi Brown being responsible for her demise, he may have introduced her to illegal drugs or steered her in that direction, but the bottom line is...she had her own mind and made her own choices so the end result ultimately rests with Whitney herself. Eric who would you like to listen to when they're all gone, will you listen to your own recording, i bet you can't sing or just maybe all you can do is Rap a song, that's not singing that's talking into a song. Everyone can Rap but not everyone can sing. What Celine is trying to say is be aware of what is going on. Too many musical genius are gone and we lost them forever for stupid reasons. They're not born in every street corner, they only come once in a life time. unless you want to live a very boring life without musically talented people like Whitney. She's gone and we've lost her forever. Celine said the truth and if you can't take it well i'm sorry to say that you're a person who like to live your life in denial.

Celine is right. For all you young singers out there... make your records and get on the covers of magazines. That's all that you wanted since you were a kid. Was partying in Hollywood part of your vision too? I'd say no. You can make your records in Hollywood, but then go home to Anytown, USA and wait for for your agent to call you with the next publicity shot. Just fly into L.A.... do what you have to... then go back home.

I to feel the same as Celine, but before I read this article I have always felt that the last several years of Whitney's life was troubled with personal issues and drugs problems. She was doing her best I feel to overcome her demons, but something just was not right. Her daughter should have been her first priority (I hope she's not going down the same road) Whitney comes from a respected family and I know that they had to know what her issues were and I would hope that they would have done something. Whitney had a voice no one could match. But we as her fans have our opinions and hope that they get their lives together, but sadly this does not always happen. Celine has been my favorite singer for years and I do agree that if you keep your distance from bad influences then you should have a good career and good life if anything for your children. My prayers go out to Whitney's family and I wish her family the best.

Doing drugs is a bad choice in life. People start out doing drugs thinking the can "Handle Them". Drugs are so powerfull no one can handle them. Over time they own the persons body, mind and soul; sometimes they kill the person.

I am ashamed FOR Celine Dion after hearing her tactless mindless banter on GMA this morning. Addiction is a disease, it is not a choice and it is but a symptom of what's going on emotionally. Unfortunately addicts either get well or die & the work & choice to recover belongs to the addict and is hard work – for the rest of your life. As insidious as addiction is, if you're in the company of entourage folks relying on you for their livelihood & you live in the public eye, must be even harder. I know Whitney never chose to be incapacitated or degrade herself, she had a disease. She was a rare & beautiful talent & I hope she has achieved the peace she sought in life. And Celine, a woman whose husband has been attracted to her since she was 12 yrs old should just mourn silently as you've nothing positive to say or have no words to comfort a young 18 yr old woman who lost her mother tragically. The blame game doesn't help, it just hurts others unnecessarily.

Considering the huge amount of mindless vituperation Celine Dion has had to tolerate from American nabobs it makes perfect sense that she doesn't want to immerse herself in that mess. She doesn't much give a flying f what the American press says and it's offending their sense of power. To those of you who have been in a coma for the last 20 years: Whitney Houston is/was a superstar with crack addled, dumpster divier tendancies that she loudly displayed in front of millions whenever she managed to emerge from her hotel room. Whitney Houston ruined -everything- with her many obvious three-week-tweaks. Dion has eyes and ears. P.S. America HATED Barbra Streisand during her 40s and now she's American Royalty. The same will happen with Celine Dion.

I'm proud of Celine for being honest about the Whitney situation! I appreciated Whitney's music, but unfortunately she made the wrong choices in her life that MAY have led to her unfortunate demise. Unfortunately, celebraties are put on a super-human scale and often turn to drugs to cope w/ the stress in their lives. Even Charlie Sheen was headed in that direction just last year...Their lifestyle is difficult, but it's their sacrifice for money and fame! Sometimes you have to think to yourself, is it really worth it! Instead of criticizing Celine, other celebraties should take her advice and Whitney fans should face the reality of the situation!

We all have followed Whitney's rise in the 80's and her turbulent relationship with Bobby Brown and her dependancy on drugs and alcohol. Ms. Whitney struggled these past couple of decades, rehab and such. It's like the proverbial train wreck... you see it coming but can't stop it. You really need to do your research. If you do you will discover that Whitney was a drug user prior to getting with Bobby Brown. Those close to her (not just random people that always find negative things to speak) have said she had tremendous overnight success and how strict her mom was being in church and she didnt know how to handle that success. So she did what any child who comes from under a strict upbringing once they taste freedom. She went wild. She was beautiful and talented which threw people off but she was a functioning drug addict. Then she meets Bobby who was a 'bad boy', probably smoked weed, drank alcohol but Bobby couldnt afford those type of drugs. She introduced him to drugs not the other way around. I loved Whitney Houston but I will not blame Bobby for her downfall and neither should anyone else. She said herself in the interview with Diane Sawyer that she was her own worst enemy, no one forced her to do anything, she decides what she wants and doesnt. So Whitney is to blame for that. I am not looking down on her because it was an illness that she could not kick. You better be careful what you say behind your computer about this and that because for all you know you could be addicted to something you cant come back from five minutes from now. If anything respect the fact she has a daughter and her father happens to be Bobby Brown whom you have directed fault to. What would we find in your closet?

Celine just stated the obvious, why are people bashing her. Whitney's toxicology results did not provide any answers yet, but the prescribed drugs was dangerous for her and it contributed to her death as well as her past drug abuse. Celine is saying what most have heard and she only told the truth which most people don't want to hear. Everyone is acting as if Whitney's problems were private and no one has the right to judge her on what contributed to her death. Come on, all of this was displayed in public and everyone knows this was inevitable. It's sad Whitney has to go at this age but her actions and her ways to cure her problems brought her to this stage. Everyone likes to remember the positive things about whitney and it's true she is a great singer and colleague to her peers, or she's a good mother to her daughter and we can't judge her on that since those were personal relationships. But celine and all of us can judge her and come to the conclusion that drugs, bad people and bad influence led her to this destructive path.

""It took over her dreams, it took over love and motherhood" "You have responsibilities as a mother, and then something happens and it destroys everything" From what I see there was nothing destroyed between Whitney and Bobbi. Who knows, I could go around saying Celine's love for her children are bought because of all the crap she buys them. Celine is correct. Her addicition won. It didn't help that those around her enabled her, and her marriage was so grossly distructive. Addiction is a horible disease. It does not discriminate. This disease affects the soul, physically, mentally and spiritually. It leaves many a relationship torn and distroyed. The vastly talented celebrities we have lost to this disease is incredibly long. And it would be beneficial for the entertainment community help educate people. It is sorely misunderstood, as it is not just a matter of removing the substances. It's not surprising that people write and judge her as everything but the insecure, fear based woman that knew excruciating pain most will never feel. I truly hope she is at peace now.

yea everyone has a right to comment. Everyone could also be speaking the truth. We can debate that all day long. What got me about celine's comments were: she was not asked about that. The questions were about what did she think about whitney's talent, career, legacy, influence on the art of singing. There is a time and place to speak the so called truth.....I just don't think that was the venue for it. Also to celine and all the others who have posted and said things over the past 2 days.....be real careful about saying what you would never do. You never know for sure what you would do until you are in that situation in a time/season of your life. The things that trip me up maybe things that you don't struggle with....but the things that I have no problem with...just maybe the things that cause your down fall. That lifestyle is different and I pray for people who struggle with the things of that life style and hope they are helped. but I pray for those who struggle. as whitney once said...sometimes it is great to have people look at her without automatically jumping into a mode of judging her, I will hold off on my opinions as to the lifestyle until it is appropreate and when it asked. until now, I will celebrate her life and move on

USA has to wake up and stop this hide and seek game. What Celine Dion was trying to say is simple. The only place in the world which produce to most biggest Celebrities is USA, everyone knows that. But these days and in this Generation take all those Celebrities and put them in one room, i mean all of them. Pass them a drug test, you'd be surprise to find out that 98% of them are on some kind of drug one way or the other. With all those consumed drugs, they will probably be dead in a few years, they will fall like a Domino Effect. And it will be the end of USA being the only place to produce Celebrities. You will go behind other countries and be forgotten. You don't have to believe me or Celine Dion, it's your choice. But if you decide to sit down and wait and do nothing about it, then you will give me and Celine Dion the credits that we were both right. It's not that her fans are in denial. It's the fact that Celine Dion was asked to call in to give a tribute to Whitney, not issue a public sermon and finger-wagging. Just because comments may be truthful does not mean they are appropriate in every setting. You wouldn't go to someone's memorial service or funeral who had passed away due to substance abuse of some sort and then get up and start being critical of their life's choices, rebuking them, etc. While your comments may be true, it is absolutely not the appropriate time and setting for those comments. You would know that what is appropriate at that time is to honor their life and memory... That is what the situation and setting call for. Celine was asked to call in to GMA and honor Whitney and what she meant to music. There is a time and place for everything, and once toxicology results are released, if it's proven that drugs played a part in her death, then maybe at that time these sentiments can be shared in that appropriate forum and at that appropriate time. For example, if Dr. Drew was doing a show on the topic of celebrity and the pitfalls that the famous face and often fall prey to, that's more of an appropriate setting for Celine's comments. GOOD FOR CELINE FOR SPEAKING THE TRUTH.....AND HOPEFULLY ALL THOSE GOD-GIVEN-TALENTED MUSICIANS TAKE NOTE.........DO NOT DO DRUGS!!!!!.......LOOK AT WHAT IT DOES TO YOUR FAMILY.....LOOK WHAT IT DOES TO YOUR FANS.........LOOK, LIVE AND LEARN! If toxicology reports come out like we all think they will, don't let this unfortunate incident pass without using it as a teachable moment for your kids. Every time there is a show on tv about the dangers of drugs a have my kids sit and watch. I want them to be scared of drugs. Use her death as a way to save others.

Celine speaks it. Absolute truth. Anytime anyone inside an industry calls it out, the criticisms come, the self-righteousness and hypocrisy. Of course the powers in, and culture of, entertainment don't want to face the truth: the money will stop flowing, then. Sad and tragic that Whitney becomes another example of the mess. RIP Whitney.

Plus Jennifer Holliday said she took care of her voice that's why she can hit notes from 30years ago and Whitney was sad she lost her voice due to lifestyle...where is the backlash from this TRUTH!! At the end of the day Whitney was a grown woman! What would we find in your closet?

I'm not a fan of Celine, but what she said is the truth, and it is something that Whitney Houston herself admitted in interviews from time to time. Whether or not Houston died from drugs, it is well known that her drug abuse and drinking ruined her singing ability and was detrimental to her career and health. What a waste. I sincerely hope Houston is at peace. Condolences to her friends and family.

Why does Celine need saving? While of course it matters why Whitney Died, her life was taken over by her drug use- that is just fact and it is incredibly sad that that happens to people, so why was Celine wrong for being loving and kind and saying that? It is scary that drugs seem to be more enticing then your life- and more really should be done to keep drugs away from people. It is so sad that Whitney DIed and whatever the reason- it is still sad, but it is even sadder that when she was alive- she lost out on much of life!

.I grieve for the loss of whitney and her dtr especially. i agree w/Celine, another fabulous voice. Why isn't everyone going after drew pinsky, jane valez mitchell et al who say what celine has said basically??? it is human nature to want to know causes, to be afraid, to have great concern for the daughter leftt behind......Whitney made Dolly's highly personal very SOFT version of "I will always love you" into one strictly where one's pipes could be blown out and move an audience in a different direction. Great song by both performers and certainly Jennifer Hudson is to be highly honored also. May you finally rest in peace, Whitney, and may others heed your words as to how a person can be a "drug" and how thinking you have to be "perfect" all the time is more than one can reasonably expect.

Celine was truthful, respectful but truthful. Why is it that the media has been reporting on her drug and alchohol abuse and now that Celine comments or speaks of it so many are appalled she would talk openly about Whitney's real troubles. Celine is not judgemental she only recognizes what the facts are and how sorrowful it is to lose so many talented people to drugs and alcohol. I for one am glad for what she said and more singers, musicians, and actors should be saying the same thing. They should come together and raise awareness of a problem that so desperately needs to be dealt with openly and honestly.

Celine Dion is correct to be scared. The list of enablers in each and every drug death case is always long. Prescription drugs are not to be played with yet...these stars get lost in a make believe world where drugs are the answer for all life's problems. It's no secret that Whitney battled with addiction and faced some harsh realities. Her stellar voice that once lifted her up had been abused too much to recover, the public backlash against her behavior had been going for awhile, her albums weren't selling and concert goers were walking out and demanding their ticket prices back. Oce (again) doctors prescribe medication(s) to a person with obvious addiction issues and the patient died. How about we use Whitney's death as a wake up call to change the laws governing a doctor's responsibility to NOT over prescribe and to intervene with addiction cases? When Ron Reagan was shot James Brady got shot in the head. The gun laws (finally) got looked into and re-worked. It's time for the same type "looking into" with prescription drugs BEFORE another celebrity dies...NOT after!

Judge Not lest ye be judged. I am very disappointed in all of the comments made in reference to Whitney Houston and the disrespectfulness and insensitive responses. I do not understand how some people can have no respect for the dead or the living for that matter. Yes, people have a right to their own opinion. But when one uses their opinion to voice aloud to influence others... Well it usually means that they are lacking. Look in the mirror and examine yourself before you utter a word about someone else's life. If you find perfection, then you are either crazy or must be God. I find it distasteful to not respect the family and Whitney's life in their time of sorrow. This may be why God has taken this beautiful person away from the earth, so she can no longer be mistreated! Rest in the arms of the Lord Whitney E. Houston! My prayers are for the living that you have left behind!

Oh give me a break. Are you Kidding? Do you seriously think we should all stand around 'respectfully' silent in this situatution? This is the passing of one of the finest vocal talents in the history of the human species. And you think we should stand here and shuffle our feet and look at the ground and mumble quietly to ourselves, lest we be Judging? The very fact that some one like Celine - and folks like us - care enough to read & write & speak about it means this is an important loss - it is the loss of a person and a talent we respect enough to have concerns for. It would be unforgiveably Stupid - and I'd say disrespectful of Whintey Houston's importance, as well - for us to hush up, deny, or ignore the True aspects of this tragedy. God doesn't want us to ignore or never speak of bad things. God doesn't wish for us to Fail to learn from the world around us. You are Very Badly mis-understanding "Judge Not" and its meaning, and you are denying yourself an understanding of the true depths of this tragedy. This is not a Death. This is a LOSS. It's the loss of something Important. If we fail to fully appreciate the loss And Its Causes, we don't understand the loss.

That is why so many continue in their destructive lifestyle because nobody wants to be open and honest. Its not about judgement but about truth and the truth is Whitney, a beautiful, extremely talented individual let the drugs/alcohol take over her life. And if anyone should speak the loudest it should be her family. If it hurts the world to see a talented singer's life cut short how much more her family who loved her so much. There will never be another Whitney. for her voice was unique and incomparable but its the time to recognize how evil drug/alcohol abuse can be and does not discriminate male or female, rich or poor, I should know I lost a brother to alcohol abuse. I am but one voice, if we all who recogize the problem and save 1 who would bring such artistic beauty to the world it will be worth it.

If people are SMART they will use Whitney's tragic story and demise as a wake up call for others in show biz or otherwise. People need to start speaking about this HONESTLY NOW. Whitney did not have to die at 48; Bobbi Kristina needed her around when she starts thinking about her career, marriage, family, children, etc. Whitney will miss all of that because she had enablers and people taking advantage of her weakness.

God bless and protect Ms. Cissy Houston and Bobbi, may Whitney finally rest in peace, and SHAME on every single person who used and enabled her. Whitney was sick and needed the people in her life to stop laughing at her and help her. Whitney's death is very upsetting and kudos to Celine for talking. "If you don't stand for something, you will fall for anything."

R.I.P. Whitney, and I will always love her beauty and voice; she was a beautiful gift.

Celine is absolutely right. i have no idea how to mourn the loss of this caliber of talent and Ignore what caused the loss. Keep in mind we lost it not just from this moment forward, but for the last 15+ years. People are not like The Market - past perfoprmance Does, sometimes sadly, indicate future performance. So odds are her death had something to do with drugs. Perhaps her death has to do with damage wreaked by previous drug use, even if it was not directly caused by drugs taken That Day. Either way - this matters. It figures in. If she'd been killed by a drunk driver or breast cancer you can Bet Those would be an active, important, considered part of the discussion. The Cause - whatever it turns out to be - is intimately co-mingled with the Result, and if you deny or ignore that you're something worse and more dangerous than naive. You're an apologist and an enabler. Furthermore, even if she slipped on a bar of soap Saturday, the fact remains that this world lost nearly two decades of this woman's incandescent, angelic talent to drug abuse and addiction. That loss - even if she were still alive today - is too great, and a tragedy, and should forever stand as a warning to others. Bravo to Celine Dion.

I, too, have always been a Whitney fan. Whether or not drugs and/or alcohol come back in toxicology does not mean that they did not play a factor in her death. We all know that she spent many year abusing her body as she had openly admitted in the past. A person can only go so long abusing themselves before tragedy strikes. This is the sad truth and certainly a tragedy.

While watching the Grammy's last night, I looked at Taylor Swift and noted that she looks so young and innocent and said a little prayer that doesn't get wrapped up in this aspect of "stardom". I pray for Whitney's daughter, that she has the strength to get through these terrible times and doesn't turn to drugs. Most of all, I hope and pray that the talented stars of my generation (and all generations) finally learn from Michael and Whitney and so many before them, not to get involved in drugs (prescription or illegal). Rest in peace, Whitney.

I have always been a whitney fan, and I have been a proffesional singer all my life. I do know how the world of entertaining can lead you down that broken road. I myself got out a few years ago, due to the lifestyle I found myself falling into. there were too many people around me encouraging me to do wrong when all I wanted to do was the right thing. If you acted like you were not into it, they shun you. So you have to close yourself OUT, just like Celine said. There is not a happy medium. You have to stay away from people that try to encourage you to do drugs. We have this thing called "Free will. we need to use it. I am glad I did. I wish Whitney could of loved herself more to be able to keep away from Everything. She simply replace one bad for the other. Firstly there was an assumption that it was drugs that caused her death, and while I understand how she fairly came to that assumption, assuming makes an a** out of you. Secondly there was an insensitivty being that this woman has jusrt recently passed. There will be plenty of time for the media to disect her every mistake in life, but had this been a personal family member to dion (god forbid) or anyone who agreed with her statements, I doubt her first comments would have been all the negative things they've done in their life. Good for Celine! Like someone I know said, why are we putting these people on pedestals? Yes, they may have ONCE been great artists, but they allowed drugs and alcohol to ultimately take over their lives! Yes, Celine is right, drugs were more important to Whitney than her family, friends, career and even her daughter.
We have the choice in life to allow something to consume us or for us to just say NO. This is not new news considering we are taught to say NO from the time we begin school until the remainder of our days. She MAY have been clean of illegal drugs, but she was still an addicted and a stupid doctor prescribed her meds.
So, yes, more people need to point out what the down falls are NOW and less about what the good was 20 years ago.

Celine took the high road. Weaker, vulnerable people don't. Celine's view is infinitely more helpful than the endless apologies and forgiveness for "poor addicted people" who can't help themselves. Celine's idea is don't put yourself in addiction's path. For some that WILL work. For many, it will not. Bravo Celine for taking the high road and for being a champion of that path. Considering all we know about addiction, it is a pity so few vulnerable people continue to avoid the crash path into addiction. Congratulations Celine for taking and recommending the high road!

Celine Dion was out of line. First and foremost, Whitney was...WAS a drug addict but that does not dictate her entire life. How dare all of you for passing judgement on her as if you know personally her life struggles. NO ONE KNOWS expect the people that were most closet to her and for those of you that ask "where were the ppl that loved her so much, did they help..." Clearly, none of you have ever experienced a fam or friend addicted to drugs. HELLO...there is a CABLE show called Intervention to give ppl insight into this horrible addiction. Drug use is life changing. What is normal to us, is not normal to a drug addict; however, because Whitney had amazing GRACE from GOD...she was able to break free...of course there were struggles and lasting effects from her drug use; however, to carry on as if you or CELINE was there until the very end is disrespectful and MEAN. I will never understand how so many people in this world would much rather pride themselves on being CRUEL than respectful. SMH Whitney was a HUMAN being that experienced human being struggles that she was able to overcome...it hurts that all some of you will be able to remember is her drug use. FOr you, that trumps the great talent she was. I pray GOD never turns His back on any of you, the way you do the ppl in this world. Talking as if you all are within sin and got a heaven or a hell to put someone in. Shame on you all. Celine was out of line and to make mention of Whitney's motherhood...so out of line. Celine, what exactly did you do to help Whitney? While what she's saying is true, could you wait till at least she's buried before everyone starts with the 'I TOLD YOU SO' interviews. Perhaps is Celine had an ounce of personality, she'd be a part of the party scene.

She was reported as fine and happy, her daughter was at the same hotel, usually do not kill yourself with child there. She was found in the bath tub, probably drowned by why is another story...lets not assume ya know what that stands for? to make ass out of you and me =assume

Celine was right in describing the failures of Whitney Houston. I'm a mother and I can't IMAGINE wasting my life away with drugs. How can you be a good mother if you snort cocaine, drink excessively, and pop pills? Whitney Houston had one of the greatest voices of all time and wasted it all away. It's just a sad situation all around.

In my opinion we've GOT to stop with this politically correct toleration of this deadly behavior. Whitney Houston CHOSE to use crack cocaine, despite the fact that she CLEARLY KNEW that it's a SERIOUS crime and that it's deadly. Addicted? Yes, FINE, I SYMPATHIZE, but there was a FIRST TIME when she CHOSE to do this. And all the many, many times afterward before she was addicted. A criminal is someone who commits a crime. Crack cocaine is a crime and it kills the user. Whitney Houston was a criminal who killed herself. Maybe such "intolerance" is needed right now – because the way things stand right now this is going to happen AGAIN. (And again and again.)

P.S. – And YES I know that the cause of death hasn't been determined yet and may have been prescription drugs. But why doesn't it occur to people that if she had depression and/or wasn't healthy enough to survive that blow, it was *directly* because of the crack and alcohol?

Very well put! I dont' disagree with some of her statements, i disagree with the manner and time period of which she made them!

I agree 100% everything that celine said but the timing is not right we all know that whitney has a drug problem but we also don't know if it's 100% sure that was the caused of the drowning. when you lost someone in the family the last thing you want to hear is criticism, negativity of why that person dies it doesn't really help on how you feel. She could at least have been more consoling and symphatyze to the family instead or did the interview after the autopsy result give the family a few days to settle down on their feelings and emotion and then she can say whatever...

Please kindly tell me what exactly Celine said that was false or malicious. She spoke the truth. And yes, the truth hurts. She, by no means, alleged that her death was caused by abusing drugs directly. She only stated that drugs and bad influences took away a whole chunk of her life. It's just very sad and very unfortunate. Celine spoke from her heart and she spoke the truth. Bravo Celine! I'm a huge fan of Whitney and my heart goes out to her family and for all her millions of fans. It's just so sad that her life here on earth had to be so short lived. For whatever reason, I'm sure cocaine and all the drugs she abused damaged her body to a big extent. We'll only know the definitive reason for her death after the autopsy is revealed. Whatever the case, Whitney, you have fought the good fight, finished the race, and kept the faith.

I agree fully with Celine. She and Gloria Estefan, to me, are the shining examples of women "divas" who have managed their careers spectacularly well. Estefan has been married to the same man for over 30 years, obviously puts her family first, has been a total paragon of virtue and, really... much of the same applies to Dion, too. Whitney had two great albums in the 80s and two big singles in the 90s - and make no mistake, she was a HUGE talent - but she spent a LOT more time in a lifestyle consumed by drugs and debauchery than she did making music. I'm a big Whitney Houston fan, but Celine Dion is dead-on 100% right: Whitney made the wrong choices and allowed drugs to destroy her career, and ultimately, her life.

Stop trying to deify the woman. Five years singing and twenty years mainlining cocaine does not a role model make.

It is utterly pitiful that the world has lost another human being (fame and stardom aside) to drug addiction...and "the empty lifestyle of celebrity". I remember Whitney Houston when she first hit the scene...she was an inspiration, a well spoken, intelligent thinking girl who was close to her mother, close to her family. Anyone would have thought that she, of all people, had the necessary tools to survive that business. So...rock on Celine Dion for being a beacon of brave honesty in an industry that just wants to sugar coat everything. Although her commons may have sounded critical of Whitney, it is my opinion that she is hurt and angry to loose another brilliant talent yet again. There are many realities in Dion's commons. She may could have said it later, but say it later or say it now; it is all the same. Lighten up on Dion, for all of those who know her public persona, knows that she isn't a negative person and she glows with every breathe, song note or smile. My prays go out to the Houston family and Bobby Brown. He too does not deserve to be blamed totally for other people's perception of what may have gone on within their marriage. Despite how much theyt try to cover it up and put a good face on the issues Houston had, they fact was it was still there and denyng it existed to nolt bring up an uncomfortable topic does noone any good, least of all Houston – who if someone may have brought up the topic and cared enough to do something REAL might still be here like many others rather than just getting them well enough to do "one more show" and make one more buck for someone.

Just think if Whitney Houston (I am a big fan) doesn't do drugs; she would have dominated the 90's. She started the 90's with Bodyguard and Waiting to Exhale and her music was on top of the charts and that would have just been the beginning. She would have been the female version of Michael Jackson but only bigger. She was beautiful, talented, and just had that charisma to be successful. Her voice was one of a kind, my word to describe her is flawless.

It is a shame we will never know how big she would have been since she was already awesome even with the drug use.

You're right about that. Celine's vocal skills are miles ahead of Whitney, but Whitney did have great tone and soul. Celine's extremely technical and not everyone can appreciate that – can come across a wee bit mechanical.

let's see if her daughter will become a druggie too! statistics show children growing up observing a parent use drugs or is abusive to their spouse will exhibit the same qualities. bobbi – abuser...whitney...druggie = daughter...in need of an intervention by family members now! if not, she'll most likely hold on to a lot of resentment and guilt. that will lead her on the wrong path soon.

True, no need to sugar coat it. It is very sad, but this happens to non-famous people all of the time and we don't sit around giving them a pat on the back and idolizing them for a job well done. I'm not shocked or surprised that this happened, just as I would not have been shocked or surprised if this had happened to one of my brothers when he was into drugs.

Yes, Whitney had a wonderful gift, but she lost it because of her addiction. I do have compassion, but she made bad choices and in the end, it cost her her life.

I am in agreement with Celine. The only real power we have, is our influences on others. And it's up to us to make those influences.....positive. I'm a 52 yr old Black Male. Most of the people in my past, perished long ago, primarily due to Drugs and Alcohol. Matter of fact: What most people don;t understand is, when viewing any episode of Soul Train, you are viewing memories of people. Well over 50-60% of those young dancers departed long ago.

She did manage to respectfully address the elephant in the room that everyone is so politely trying to dance around. I still can't stand Dion's voice, but she just went up a couple points in my estimation for being honest about a tragic situation.

At least one celebrity is coming out and telling at least part of he truth. The truth is that the whole concept of celebrity status and stardom was rigged from the beginning–going all the way back to the 1920's and 30' in Hollywood. When we people get smart and get the stars out of their eyes and come down to reality. Singing a song, throwing a ball through a hoop, repeating some line in front of a camera don't really mena a d**n thing and the people who do these things need to be placed much closer to earth in our minds than hung up near the stars.

Absolutely correct!! Thank you for pointing that out – way too much "harmless" drug abuse in popular culture! Say what you will about young people needing to be smarter, the unfortunate truth is they are very susceptible to pop culture influences and will especially indulge in "hip" things that don't appear dangerous, as marijuana is usually portrayed. Personally, I have two older brothers that destroyed their potential, and thus their lives, as young adults because smoking marijuana was the "in" thing - now they are middle aged and leading miserable, dead-ended lives. Pop culture needs to wake up and treat drug abuse as the danger it is, or talents like Whitney Houston will continue to die too young.

I chose to be cautious not to fall into it as my dad was an alcoholic. But it isn't as easy for many. I don't understand how a substance can take you over like that. And I won't ever really know. I pray for those that have addictions, that they can find the help and support they need to acknowledge and understand how to deal with it. Addiction breaks so many hearts. Nothing Celine said was innapropriate. Yes, the autopsy report has yet to be released, but stating that Whitney's life was run off the rails by drugs, bad people, and bad influence isn't quick to judge speculation. It's widely known and it's accurate. She was just stating the obvious. At no point did I hear Celine claim to know exactly how she died. To speculate that her lifestyle was a factor is obvious and perfectly reasonable. We're all thinking it. I've seen tons of people on Facebook making these same comments. Plus, Celine didnt' say anything disparaging towards Whitney. It's not like she was painting her to be some loser drug addict who deserved what she got. She was simply saying that her life took an unfortunate turn. I heard nothing but kind words for Whitney.

Cennay, Zidek 123, and MarkWGaither are the ones who should feel embarassed and should be apologizing.

There is nothing anyone could have done for Whitney. She was a fragile angel who was overcome by the stresses and pressures of her career. She will be profoundly missed.

Oh, and Celine Dion released her first album in 1981. She and Rene didn't marry until December of 1994. By that point she already had a few platinum records and two US top-ten singles to her name. She did not marry for a record contract.

I agree with the statements already made here...and for those criticising Celine I say, this is not unexpected. We didn't need to wait for autopsy results to know that drugs and alcohol would be involved. All you had to do was be watching the last few times she was out in public – it was obvious to everyone that her talent had been wasted. The voice was pretty much gone (btw, bulimia to stay thin will shred your vocal chords), the breath control that had once been so stupendous was gone, she had one foot in the grave for a long time. It is also ironic and tragic that her mother, who sang backup for Elvis in the Sweet Inspirations, was apparently not able to use the experience of watching him disentigrate to convince her daughter to stay away from drugs.

Bravo to Celine. She was not judging she was telling it like it is, and if that ruffles some peoples' feathers - too bad. Drugs killed Whitney. Period. Tragic. But a spade is a spade regardless of what you want to call it.

That 800lb elephant you speak of does that include all the people in the so called inner circle around these celebrities? The people who are in close contact with these stars every day and neglect to say or do anything about a possible drug or alcohol problem. They will keep quiet just as long as the pay cheques keep coming in. They will do whatever they are told. It's all so pathetic! Celine was right on the money with her remarks, open your eyes people!

Ya , Celine may have been out line .But the truth has to be told .I loved her music BUTTTTT what has Whitney done in the last 15 years of her life but party , drink and take drugs and look like a damn fool in pubic . Who are the fools WE are as a society letting people do this do them selves and turn the other way . Who in Gods green earth takes pills and drink alcohol without deadly results in the end . Look at everyone who has died from it TONS "` ,When we will in a society put down the drugs , alcohol and food and stop killing ourselves on a daily basis in this country . I BET NEVER !!!

Celine completly told the truth. It is so sad that such a wonderful talent is gone because Whitney was a beauty and had a wonderful voice, but like so many other talents – she was on drugs, drinking, partying, etc. too much going on with her. Such a sad ending.

Yes, Whitney had a beautiful voice and I am so sorry for her family and her daughter. We need to stop worshiping people who use drugs like they are a person to look up to. There are people in the entertainment business who never use drugs and are successful. Does drug use and the entertainment industry go hand in hand? The entertainment business needs to take some serious steps to stop this kind of behavior to continue to ruin their reputation. There is a huge huge problem of drug use in our country and to worship this kind of lifestyle or habit is wrong. Drugs ruin people's lives, kill people, and hurt many many people. Get a grip society stop the drug use it is ruining our society. Thanks Celine for your comments. It was the truth. C

I am in 100% agreement. She was saying what anyone, with any sense of reality, would think and say. How many people in Hollywood have to die for people to understand this tragic epidemic. Denial will help no one.

Celine was free to make her observaton. It is NOT insensitve. Odd are WH had medications in her system which contributed to her demise....who is kidding who.. It also could have been the effect of years of abuse.
The Thursday night pics of her..are not kind to her. She looked drunk or messed up.
Sad for her and her family no matter what. But a waste of part of a life..

celine dion should shut her pie hold. if she must comment, she should comment about her life. maybe she could comment on her relationship with her husband. wasn't he married when they met? wasn't she little more than a child when they met? now, that's something we KNOW and can discuss to get the actual details. until the toxicology reports come back, we (including celine dion) don't know what whitney houston died from.

I am confused. What is wrong with Celine stating what is common knowledge? while we don't yet know if drugs were directly involved in Whitney's, death there is absolutely no doubt that drugs destroyed her career, threatened her life and wreaked havoc on her amazing voice. Given who the music and show business scene has lost to drugs, Celine Dion was speaking as a grieving friend and it was entirely appropriate for her to voice her fears and sense of despair. The sad thing is we know Celine's cautionary words will not break the grip drugs have on too many people. Nor will they deter many newcomers from taking that first offer just to appear "cool",etc.

The Celine critics need to take a step back and see her interview for what it was-grief at the loss of a friend and fear that she will lose more of them.

I AGREE WITH CELINE, WE ALL HAVE CHOICES TO MAKE AN WE ALL MAKE MISTAKES AND WHITNEY DEFINITIVELY MADE HER SHARE. WHILE EVERYONE WANTS TO PLAY SELF RIGHTEOUS, JUST REMEMBER HOW YOU LIVE YOUR LIFE IS WHAT THE WORLD WILL REMEMBER YOU BY. HER MUSIC WAS MORE THAN BEAUTIFUL, BUT HER CHOICES WERE LESS THAN RESPONSIBLE. I HAVE 5 CHILDREN AND THEY WILL ALWAYS BE MORE IMPORTANT THAN ANY DRUG, MAN OR AMOUNT OF MONEY. WE MAY NOT LIKE THE TRUTH, BUT NEVER THE LESS IT IS WHAT IT IS. IF YOU WANT TO HEAR MORE LIES THAN THE TRUTH, JUST WAITS UNTIL THE PERSONS DIES. JUST REMEMBER GOD KNOWS.

Why pretend? Even if drugs didn't kill Whitney, she has been involved with drugs for decades. She could have died another time. I think Dion's comments ARE appropriate. Maybe they will be heard by other stars. She is right, the stars who keep their lives family-oriented and private and don't party do well in the business. In my hometown in So. Oregon are a number of Hollywood celebs who are raising their kids away from SoCa.

I agree wholeheartedly with the comments made by Celine and I grew up adoring Whitney Houston and her music, idolized her like everyone of my generation did. There has been no secret that her career has careened out of control by virtue of the decisions she has made. She admitted this in numerous interviews as well. If you could ask her today whether she'd rather have lived a drug-free life or that which overtook her for the last number of years, I'd bet she'd chose the former. I will continue to listen to Celine Dion and just like all of us, we are afforded freedom of an opinion by those who fought and continue to fight for it. Celine Dion did not say anything that is untrue or that hasnt been written in the press time and time again, sadly.

I agree, there is a huge pink elephant in the room that everyone is trying to ignore. Celine only stopped at the most recent celebrities whose lives ended abruptly because of drugs. She only verbalized what the rest of us have already been thinking. And people want to criticize HER? Celine never had a reputation of being falling – down under the influence of drugs or alcohol, she's never been booed off stage because she couldn't carry a note if she had had a fork lift to help her (Whitney Houston has...) and she hasn't been in and out rehab three or four times.

Has the people seen the photo's of Whitney's personal bathroom. My God, what a horrible atmosphere to bring up a child, which by the way, has photo's floating around of her snorting cocaine (or crack?).

Whitney had the most beautiful voice, she could hit notes like no other singer, but let's face facts: When the toxicology reports come back they will probably make Michael Jackson's use of Propofol look like a trip to fridge for a glass of milk.

      Sorry Whitney, RIP.

Don't hate on Celine because she called it as she saw it and makes complete sense. Not only is she talented, she is smart. There is a dark horse lingering in this room denying the plain and simple fact that drugs do destroy lives. Drugs, bad decisions and hanging out with the wrong people. Denial is the first indication of addiction. Get informed. Whitney Houston, superstar, did drugs (perhaps not recently) and made bad decisions hanging out with the wrong sorts. As for the cause of her death, I hold judgement until the coroner's report is completed and announced.

Even if the toxicology report comes back negative, it proves nothing. A 48 year old woman does not typically just up and die. Years of drug abuse takes it toll and nobody can deny that.

Whitney had a desease and some people can not be healed of their deseases and some can. It is like two people having the same cancer and the treatment may work for one but not the other. I think it has a lot to do with your body and mind. and also I think Whitney had bipolar disorder and unfortunitly treatment does not work for most of those people. Dion was only looking at her side of the story, not that she was wrong but you really have to factor in a lot of other things also.. some people have addictive genes and some people don't. People don't realize how powerful the genes are. Personally I think Whitney was a mentally ill person because anybody in their right mine would never have thrown all that away,.No one knows what their genes consist of it could have come from ten generations ago. Lets just pray for Whitney. Dion should pray that none of her children got a bad gene.

What Celine Deon said was inappropriate at this time. That kind of discussion should be said after the family and friends have time to mourn her loss. She was a gift from heaven and she suffered the worst kind of trials. Shame on anyone who spreads gossip at this time. Her voice was what you expect to hear from a angel. The feeling she spread when she sang was from the very soul and pure. You felt what she gave to every note! Bless her now and forever. Remember she was a mother when you comment on here and what human beings should do out of respect for those who are still here.

Rebar, the phrase that is appropriate in this case is "800 pound elephant in the room." An 800-pound gorilla usually refers to someone or something so large and powerful that it lives by its own set of rules or to describe a dominant player. "The elephant in the room" refers to an obvious truth that no one is addressing" which is very appropriate in this discussion. Good for Celine for honestly addressing the facts.

Thank you, Honest Abe, for not criticizing Dion for the way overdue comments she made about drug abuse that has run rampant around those in Hollywood. I don't interpret what Dion said to mean that she was a "bad" mother, but that without drugs she would have undoubtedly been a more "present" mother. Dion was simply saying what others are too cowardly to say about celebrities, as if they're to be held on a pedestal, and they can do no wrong. Thank you to you, Celine, for saying what others dare not say but what definitely needs to be said.

Abe.....you may be honest, but you don't know your metaphors. It's an 800 pound gorilla you stooge!! New born elephants weigh nearly 800 #'s.

However, I agree with your comment.

I think most folks would agree that white folks in America aren't allowed to make speculative comments about black people in the media spotlight or in general. We can't because we don't know what its like to be "black". Remember those moronic tee-shirts of a decade ago....."It's a Black Thing, You Wouldn't Understand!!". Well, you're right! I don't want to understand! If understanding means that a person stating the obvious (Celine Dionne) about a has-been crack-head's death becomes the bad guy......I don't understand. Everyone is so conditioned to not say anything bad about black people, I guess its collective guilt for slavery....which neither myself or my ancestors were even here for, that Whitney gets a free pass and is remembered for all she "Did" in her life. Well, will someone please tell me what she "did" for anyone other than herself in her life??? Let's be honest, her Bobbi Brown look-a-like daughter, was out drinking with mom both nights before she bought the farm. I have an 18 year son, and not only is he NOT going to be out drinking and partying with dad, he's going to suffer consequences if he gets Caught drinking illegally. See, that's what parents do...

I also had the misfortune of watching about an hour of her "we goin' to have Chuuch!" service. I think Bobby Brown was smart to bail before it started, because he must have known it was going to be a bizarre, drawn-out 4 hour faux love marathon that enabled an endless series of self-indulgent, preening divas, both male & female, to destroy any shred of dignity that Whitney had left after her manner of death. I can't believe I'm going to say this; but the person who said the most poignant, sincere, BRIEF, and moving thing was TYLER PERRY!!?? MADEA ladies & gentlemen....Madea!!? It was embarrassing, and why do Jesse Jackson and Al frickin' Sharpton have to be at every single "black" event. Who pays for them to get there & can not the greater black community come up with two other guys who actually have full command of English and don't make it all about them?? I seem to recall a half-black guy I helped vote into the office of President a few years ago & he graduated from Columbia University AND Harvard Law, and he manages quite well to dazzle with his oratory, without being a "sell-out". So there are black women and men out there who can represent a lot better than two old guys who managed to fool an entire generation that they espouse the same ideals and had the same skills as Dr. Martin Luther King. I'm done with that.

I'm sorry, I'm just sick of this ridiculous double standard. I don't recall a national/global outpouring of nothing but love and false praise for the life Curt Cobain lived when he committed suicide. There were no cameras in the church service, his family had some class. However, everyone focused pretty much solely on his drug addiction. Two supremely talented people, two tragic and pointless early deaths. It would be nice if people around Whitney would use her death as a teaching point for young black girls that messing around with drugs and alcohol, hanging with the wrong people, & staying in a physically & emotionally abusive relationships with men are absolutely NOT acceptable, and they have alternative choices that will lead them to happy and hopefully successful lives. I'm not racist, look up the facts people @ who has by far the highest rates of abuse and addiction. Hint: it's not the Asians.

So, in closing, let's cut the crap and call a spade a spade here. Celine's comments, though hurtful to some, are 100% on target and should be welcomed, especially after this week-long denial period, not hushed up. What are we going to find out, that she died of an aneurism while taking a bath??? NO!! It's gonna be some combination of either prescription or illegal drugs & alcohol. Accept it, learn from it & move on.

Sorry if that hurts, but tearing the band-aid of quickly hurts a lot less that slowly.

But drugs and other abuses to her body did not help her career. I am glad to see someone with wisdom and a healthy fear of drugs, like Celion is an advocate for doing right.
