Catholic League: Is Nicki Minaj possessed?

As promised, Nicki Minaj's performance at Sunday's Grammy Awards did offer plenty to talk about, and it's also riled the Catholic League.

The rapper/singer turned in a performance riddled with nods to religion, from her stroll down the red carpet accompanied by a pope lookalike, to the confession that opened her performance, to the "exorcism" of her alter-ego, Roman, in a pre-taped skit.

While performing her single "Roman Holiday," Minaj was surrounded by choir boys and monks (who could also bust a few moves) and eventually began to levitate high above the stage.

After seeing that, the Catholic League issued a statement inquiring as to whether Minaj is actually possessed.

To the Catholic League's president, Bill Donohue, "perhaps the most vulgar part" of Minaj's show was "the sexual statement that showed a scantily clad female dancer stretching backwards while an altar boy knelt between her legs in prayer."

Donohue asserts in his statement that "none of this was by accident, and all of it was approved by the Recording Academy, which puts on the Grammys. Whether Minaj is possessed is surely an open question, but what is not in doubt is the irresponsibility of the Recording Academy. Never would they allow an artist to insult Judaism or Islam."

What did you think of Minaj's performance?

You actually make it appear really easy together with your presentation but I in finding this topic to be actually one thing which I believe I might never understand. It kind of feels too complicated and extremely extensive for me. I'm looking ahead in your next submit, I'll try to get the cling of it!

She's possessed by stupidity and an utter lack of talent.

If we have deeply held opinions that others find offensive, that's one thing. It's common in politics, for example. No one should not have an opinion just because someone else thinks it's offensive. Even then, we can state those opinions in a rational and non-offensive manner. But to go around offending people on purpose as she – and more than a few other – singers do is another matter altogether. That is classless, vulgar, and just plain stupid.

People who have little or no talent resort to shock crap. They tend to pick on a group that won't or can't fight back. It's not unlike the racism and stereotypes of old– can you get away with trashing a whole group?"

Really? The poor little Catholic church? You mean the same church that over the years has murdered millions, caused wars, still continues to be a cause for concern in Ireland, has millions of members, etc... that same organization that can't fight back? Please... this is not racist, it's nothing more than a (horrible) performance meant to drum up comments like this on CNN to sell more musi....*puke* sorry... I mean albums.

Ppl say " I hope she finds god," and "i was diasppointed."

Im not trying to offend anyone.but that is just umm wow. Her performance was amazing last night and it had a story to it. If your a bandwagon barbie who jump on nicki when super bass got hype, your not gonna like Roman Holiday. Nicki is just part of her talent roman is the firey crazybess that was on bottoms up and the other features that were top on billboard.

As for the she shouldnt mix that with god.

The point of last night was.....
She was roman zolanski who is nicki minaj's gay twin brother that resides within nicki minaj....
Martha, romans mother, sent her to moscow to a monastery where they tried to exorsize Roman and make him normal.....that is what the song was...the chorus was Martha convincing Roman to fort the exorcism convincing him...but at the end of the performance Roman apologized because when Nicki "levitated and passed out" Roman knew that the exorcism didn't work cause you can't change Roman because nothing is rlwrong with Roman...

So before you start talking about it like you know blah blah blah god blah blah think...your a band wagoner who didn't start liking nicki till super bass.....therefore you haven't listened to her lyrics or her interviews THEREFORE you don't know what the hell you are talking about...

I have loved Nicki since before 2007 when she wasn't even on the map and when your a band wagoner and you don't know what you are talking about...Cause you Damn sure were kissing her ass when she was singing and rapping about love but now that it is something different you all wanna get your panties in a wad......

    Have a nice day

I blame the Grammy for even allowing such a performances, this happens now because some idiot allowed the whole foundation of what the Grammy was about. We now have artist and music that just does not make sense and think they have talent. There r so many. People in this world that have talent but never get the chance. It all just goes right back to who now a days has money and throws their weight around and allow such songs and music and artist to even be part of the music industry. So with this being said, sure we r going to continue to have artist perform and sing what they want and then get a grammy. We are also the people that allow our self and our children to purchase this crap that makes no talent people rich and create a category inthevideo first place called rap music...

Luckly for me, the national tv that shows the grammys had made a commercial break when that thing was on show.

Madonna must have got a few millions to get those 2 "artists" to join her on the new album... they don´t know how to sing. They are very bad performers. They can´t get a good jingle on a live show.
Even Madonna with over 50 can jingle but those things cannot get a single step correctly.
She did almost the same on the superbowl show... but MIA got the spots with the finger.
But there is another question: the last Madonna cd got a very bad review from all the black radios and didn´t even get into any rap/hip-hop show. So did Madonna got those 2 to try to get some black people back to her music?
I think that madonna could do that with the fat guy that made a great point on the Like a prayer on the superbowl... but the editors had a massive payout by those 2 kinda like artists...

I think Nicki's performance was very disgraceful. I like some of her music, but for the most part, not a big fan. She totally made a mockery out of herself and I was in shock to the point I couldn't even change the channel trying to figure out was really happening on my TV! How the Catholic League got involved in this is really crazy, but someone's voice should be heard, not necessarily theirs!

I'm no prude by a long shot, and I like edgy artists like Lady Gaga, but I thought the whole performance was dumb. One is hard-pressed to call it music, art and certainly not entertainment. When done, I had to ask, "What in the hell was that all about?" A real waste of airtime.

I like Nicki....I just didn't get that performance. If anyone has seen Nicki Minaj a few years ago, in my opinion, she was better. And I understand as an artist you don't want to get stuck in the same routine and you have to reivent yourself, but she's has gone WAAAAAYYYY left. Ok... this is what happened......take note Nicki....Your performance overshadowed your song. You are trying to sell the song not the performance. If you were to tone the performance down a little maybe other would understand what the song was about.

That abomination of a performance may have been more offensive to my aesthetic sensibilities as it was to the Catholic Church's religious ones. It was just plain awful.

It almost looked like a parody. Something you would see in a 2011 hip hop version of Spinal Tap.

Why would she do this? No one told her not to. Really rich famous people tend to be surrounded by asskissers. No one wants to tell the king or queen they have no clothes. So over time, they make terrible decisions.

In this case, the bad judgment resulting from a lack of good advice only killed our ears and eyes. But the lack of good advice killed Whitney, it killed Michael Jackson, it killed Elvis,

If they mocked any other religion in a similar fashion it would be considered a hate crime. If a cartoon of Muhammad appears in a publication it is considered extremely offensive to many, and most likely censored. Why would the people in charge of the Grammys allow such an obvious display of hostility to one particular religion is beyond me. It is extremely divisive. Imagine if they had the stereotypical medieval shylock instead of a fake Pope; that would never get aired.

Why? Because she is the big happening thing in hip hop related pop music. So no one will say no to her.

Also, historically, the Grammy's have a rep for being lame. They are too pop, seldom cutting edge.

My hunch is the Grammy people also thought this performance would make them look all edgy.

It made me edgy. Edgy of vomiting.

She is possessed by the same thing that organized religion is possessed by. The so called church has been playing the masses for fools, for over 2000 years. They want us to treat them as though they are the only one's that are able to have an audience with the Universal Consciousness. The truth is, is that each one of us has that unrecognized power, simply by going inside of ourselves, through meditation. That knowledge is what the son of man left us and that is all we need.

What I find ironic is that, in a show that featured women with real talent – Adele, Jennifer Hudson, Whitney Houston - we choose to focus on one woman who shouts "Look at me." Those other women simply shared their gift. If Nicki wants to decry religion, she has the right as an American to do it. It won't affect those who do believe, any more than her performance will impress those who have serious doubts. There is so much in the world that deserves our anger. Don't waste that anger on the trivial.

People who are expressing negative views are either religious apologists, or don't have enough of a perspective on human culture to know that entertainment and music comes in all different forms, and Nicki Minaj is even mainstream in any case (nothing particularly esoteric). I saw some people comparing her to Adele. Guess what? They're different people with different talents producing different forms of related entertainment. I like Adele's voice and soulful, evocative songs, and I also like Nicki Minaj's generally upbeat rhythms and unique voice. She's more of an "entertainer" then a "singer," but both artists entertain and give the joy of music and artistic expression for others to enjoy. Even if your tastes aren't expansive enough to enjoy Nicki Minaj's form of entertainment, don't hate! That's the bottom line: don't hate!

I saw Sinead O'Connor, for all intent and purpose get drummed out of the business for a simple poem about the horrors of war and suggesting that Catholicism was the root cause. And she is from Northern Ireland, so wether or not you agree with her sentiment, you have to at least respect her right to voice the opinion using her art as her medium. Simple. Non-demonstrative, other than tearing a photograph in half. NM's performance was nothing more than shock value garbage with no statement that makes any sense that I can discern. But maybe that is the point. It is OK to shock so long as you don't voice an opinion that hits too close to the truth.

Dear IDIOTS! (especially Jeff) You have turned another forum about one subject into another hate-filled anti-Muslim rant! Or right-wing political bull session. First you know-nothing know-it-alls, MOHAMMAD IS NOT Islam's GOD! Allah is the God of Islam. MOHAMMAD is his prophet. Jesus is also considered a revered prophet of Islam. The name Allah is used in many middle eastern areas and in more than one religion! But you wouldn't bother to READ anything, would you? You would rather shoot of your ignorant mouth. If you disrespect another person religion (because you know nothing about it) why should that person respect yours? Why do I bother? Because Christians are supposed to respect others, regardless of who they are or where they come from. You do not have the right to sit in judgement of anyone! Here's an idea! Try actually reading your Bible! Concentrate on the New Testament & the words of Jesus. You might learn something, but probably not. I cast my pearls before swine & they will trample them.

Following the Madonna steps, she has no talent so she needs to look for something shocking and controversial in order to get people's attention. No creativity, no brains, no talent... In addition, I would say that if this kind of show would have involved "disrespect" to the black community, my God, we would be watching the news talking about how outrageous and racist, discriminatory this message is...Not to mention Muslims... can you imagine doing this kind of insult to their religion? Please, be fair and respectful of other people's faith. If you are a nobody and want to be famous, use another type of "performance", with something in it that means talent and good entertainment, not this garbage.

We all are allowed an opinion and free to share that opinion. What I find not fair is that we can make fun of any religion except for Islam. Catholics can be judged and made fun of and we take it and don't get too bothered by it, same with the Jewish faith. But it would be bad TV and everyone would be in an uproar if it was about Islam. All I have to say is keep it fair, whether you believe in God or not doesn't matter, Jewish, Muslim, we are allowed to believe what we want, but one religion/or view should not get special treatment over another.

It's one thing to use gimmicks to enhance a song's message (Alice Cooper) but it's something else when gimmicks are intended to distract the audience from poor songs and poor singing, which appears to be the way of today.

1st of all it is not about being Catholic, the Pope, or an alter boy. The issue is the total disrespect for religion. You will Never see anyone mock Jews, or Muslims in this manner. If they did they would not have a job, or a career. It aint right and as a Chistian and not Catholic I found the performance offensive. Especially when they sing Come All Ye Faithful??. I mean it was just disprectful. You got reporters in hiding because they said stuff about Islam. I mean Sasha Cohen had to get security after Bruno or Borat one them came out due to death threats. If you gonna mock religion do all of the faiths. The person that does that is Seth Mcfarland on Family Guy.. So leave all the other stuff alone.

Any molestation of a child is a tragedy. Still, can you really blame the Catholic church when pedophilia is a mental illness that crosses all demographics? Why aren't you condemning all pedophiles instead of just Catholic priests? That's a blanket generalization that is harmful to other victims of pedophilia. The honest answer is because it's easier to the finger at a group you misunderstand and will put no effort in understanding because their beliefs differ from your own. That's a dangerous road to take, though, so be careful. Thinking that *only* priests are pedophiles will make kids in your own community vulnerable. Wake up and be honest with yourself. It's easier for you to mock religion than to acknowledge that we all have the potential for mental illness, and that someone we know could be the next victim.

Completely disrespectful of what the show is suppose to represent and that is MUSIC.. took away from true artists who's voices are truly timeless......Adele, Taylor Swift, Whitney Houston...etc etc................

Her performance was dedicated to all who condemn and judge, which is mainly the Christian Religion, in addition the Roman Catholics. The Western culture was created and formed off of the Christian Religion, so of course she will use it to make a statement. We are all children of GOD, regardless what you call HIM, HE will answer, that is what GOD calls love. While we here on earth fighting on whose GOD is better than the next. We need to realize there is a difference, but that is only because GOD is versatile. Majority of the world praise a "god or goddess", and that is where the problem begins. Their "god/goddess" is too small, and so is their faith. When your GOD is big, then you will stop paying attention to the small so-call gods/goddess...such as satan...so if Minaj, and the rest of them are selling their souls...just know they are sick and confused...but still GOD's children...and all religion is a path to GOD, every single one of them is part of the big puzzle, pray that you are strong enough to solve it.

The moment Minaj arrived with her stunt double Pope, the air was thick with pretention. The Catholic League ought not to fret too much about Minaj's tragic, artistically sub-par "performance-art-piece-gone-worse-than-any-number-of-the-worst-performance-art-pieces-of-the-last-sixty-or-so-years-of-performance art-pieces-done-by-self-indulgent-so-called-artists" because, Minaj's ridiculous display will mostly be forgotten by the world in well under a year's time.
The performance wasn't genuinely scandalous, nor was it original as socio-religious-political commentary or ground-breaking as an artistic statement or concept. Frankly, Minaj's "work" was derivative of so many that have already beat Minaj to the punches and jabs at Catholicism – decades ago. One such example: Sinead O'Conner simply shredding a picture of the Pope on Saturday Night Live had far more effect than Minaj's grossly overproduced public "artistic" masturbation can ever hope to have.
So, the Catholic League, can fuss all they feel they must to justify their jobs but they shouldn't waste more than a few days on railing against the laughable, clown-like performance by Minaj – as attention will only give her more jollies – and why waste valuable time on someone destined to be a footnote in Music History and a non-note in the Art World?

I notice most of the commentors here are women. It's funny how quickly you all are to defend the Catholic Church. I don't think it would be so quick to defend you, actually I know so. Can anybody think of anything the Catholic Church has done in the past week that my have offended women? Is it possible that maybe the artist was out to make a statement about that here? Ever cross anybody's mind?

Straw man argument, LJ. It's a logical fallacy, what you've got dreamed up in your head about the Catholic church offending women. The major point that you seem to have missed is not whether or not the church supports birth control, but whether or not our government has the right to tell a church what it should or shouldn't do. If you can't see that as a gross violation of separation of church and state, you are either foolish or brainwashed. If a woman wants birth control (and most of us do) we should pay for it, or make the man bag it. Our government should not be telling churches what to do, let alone something that goes against its teachings. Because let's he honest here–that's a slippery slope, and once the government gets away with telling churches what to do, it's a short trip to telling the rest of us what to do.

As for me...I am hoping Minaj uses multiple forms of birth control. Let's hope she doesn't breed. One of her is way too many.

Well I have read all the comments and the one I like the best is the one that says her last name says it all. I am a Catholic and I can oot believe that we Catholics allow that type of disgusting crap to be said about our Religion. Separation of church and state does not mean we have to like what that Nicki believes and if we were all smart we would no longer purchase any of her music. Nicki obviously does not have any self worth because any one who runs around admitting to being a sinner and opposed to any one even the Pope who is willing to forgive her for her sins. Worst yet who is the dude who played the Pope or Priest or what ever he was, he can't be all there either. Does money mean everything to those in Hollywood.

I wouldn't go so far as to say brilliant but it was a parody on The Exorcist and Madonna's Like A Prayer. People who are outraged had the opportunity NOT to watch her performance after watching her entrance on the red carpet. To imply that one religion is superior over another one by the type of performances at a music awards is disingenuous. It was far from being the worst performance at a Grammy Award show. If people chose to watch beyond the red carpet, then they chose to be offended and anyone who has ever seen Nicki Minaj perform knows that she is just that- a performer and there is a huge difference between being a performer and an artist.

In reply to Really? In describing Nikki Minaj, I would use the term "artist" loosely. I don't mind a little "shock value" and entertainers doing crazy things for the sake of publicity, but it seems today's "artists" are going a little too far and the message they intend to convey, if they even have one, gets lost in the absolute ridiculousness of their actions. What the *&^$ was the purpose of M.I.A.'s flying the bird at the Superbowl supposed to mean? Nikki's performance was a disgrace and had no place on this show. If she wants to do it at her shows where people pay to see her crap, fine. BTW I am 25, so I am not totally out of touch.

You don't get it. The point is to generate buzz. Any publicity is good publicity. If M.I.A. hadn't flipped the bird at the superbowl would anybody still be talking about her? Now she's in the news, she can appear on shows and explain why she did it. It's all about exposure. As for Nicki Minaj, I mean, artists have been having controversial performances since art was invented. Prudes are always gonna be around to be outraged and that's exactly what the artist wants them to do.

Come on Jeff, this article was plainly about what the artist did and you go and turn it into a religious battle between Christians and Muslims. And then you go and call someone you've never met or studied a terrorist. American society allows any and everything to be seen or heard on television and radio. We live in a perverted society, so what else is new. Instead of adding to the nonsense, start of cause for greater understanding. What was BIll doing up anyway watching the grammy's? Shouldn't he have been in bed or reading scripture?

Muhammad is not a deity. The God of Islam is the same as Christianity. Muhammad was just a prophet. There is a long line of them in the Bible.

@meredith: please. there may be a few good ideas in the new testament, but trying to support your idea with a quote from Romans? Written by one of those dudes that Jesus was always saying didn't get his point. And at a time when we start to see the Christian church twist Jesus' words to meet its own immediate needs. Next time, tell us something Jesus said to support your idea. I think you'll be looking for quite a while.

for all those who agree with the latter bit of this guys comment are shockingly ignorant. Not only are you factually wrong by saying that muhammed is a god, but fail to realize that their god is actually the same. you know what the christian arabs refer to god? surprise surprise...its Allah. Whats in a name anyways? we can call him whatever we want...the point is there is only one diety that created the Muslims, Christians, and everyone else.

And whats really stupid is instead of channelling your energy to the those who insult Christianity (like minaj) you losers get distracted by islam yet again. im not muslim, but I know if a muslim insults jesus...he is not considered a muslim....something to think about.

Jeff you are absolutely correct. Performers can target Catholicism for "Artistic reasons" but you never see a Jewish or Islamic ritual depicted on these awards in a negative light .(Not that I would condone that either ) but definintely a bias here.

I agree she's not worth watching but the comnspiracy theories about WH being killed by some secret organization is ludicrous. ANd I see someone has already pointed out that Mohammad is NOT the Muslim God, he's his prophet and that Muslims also consider Jesus a prophet as well. Do some research will you?

It was one of the stupidest things I have ever seen. I am not Catholic, but it seemed to purposely mock Catholic ritual and was clearly designed for controversy. It was never creative, coherent, or well executed. Stupid is the only word that seems to fit. Calling it a performance is insulting to those who actually do it. The bigger insult is that it was meant to be entertaining.

Right on, Emily. I don't think they used real holy water, so I don't believe any people or animals were harmed in the process, but it sure was a silly talentless act. Joe Walsh's classical guitar accompaniment to Paul McCartney was, thankfully, another story – very refreshing – and to me, the 2% of a show of that type that is worth watching and listening to.

I didn't see talent in Nicky show last night. It was some sort of weird show that was insulting to a religion. Does she has to go that low to make fans? What happen to the old goo music and talent. She is talented with rapping not pop. That is why it was disgusting. Can't wait to hear next year some of the incredibly talented girls on youtube but haven't gotten a chance to shine yet, i.e. EriAm Sisters or their lead singer Haben...

Hollywood has declared war on the Catholic Church.
      1. The Catholic Church is going to war with this administration.
      2. The Catholic Church is the True Church and needs to be brought down. As the Church goes, so does the world.
      3. Also the Illuminati killed W. Houston. They use the color red which denotes their sacrifice and on Minaj's outfit looks like the outline of W. Houstons face, they leave clues.

Check out Kate Moss and her diabolical outfits, 'Catholic nuns and upside down crosses.'

That was one of the most obscene performances ever on the Grammys, and i have watched them for fourty years. And on the night everyone was trying to deal with the death of Whitney Huston. This performance was and insult to her and her faimly. Why didnt the Grammys drop the curtain on her or cut her mic.She is vial and disgusting,i do not as a Catholic understand why she did this. I think either she is a complete moron with no talent or she wanted to steal the attention from the tragic death of Whitney Huston wich in itself is just sick. I hope that she just goes away and is not invited to perform in public again.

That was hilarious! Nearly spewed my screen with my coffee! I watched the "event" and was just puzzled. The lyrics didn't tell any kind of story and had no rhyme or rhythm; the so called 'music' was so bad it wasn't even sampled from other better material. If she "wrote" this "song", and it is the premier single from her upcoming new album, that's all i need to know to keep me from buying it. If that's the best song on the thing, imagine how bad the rest must be! Even the audience of "music professionals" were puzzled and unsure how to react to that tripe. I don't mind sensationalism, even just for it's own sake, in the arts, but usually I do expect there to be some kind of coherent point. That 'performance' was a cold mess!
