Randy Travis arrested for public intoxication

Country star Randy Travis was arrested in Sanger, Texas, early Monday morning for public intoxication.

The Denton County Sheriff's Office tells CNN that Sanger police found a vehicle parked in front of a Baptist church very early Monday morning and, upon further investigation, discovered Travis in the car with an open bottle of wine. The police say the 52-year-old  singer smelled of alcohol.

According to the Sheriff's Office, Travis was arrested shortly after midnight on Monday and taken to the Denton, Texas, county jail. He was given a citation and held because of intoxication until 7:44 this morning, when he was released.

"I apologize for what resulted following an evening of celebrating the Super Bowl," Travis tells CNN in a statement. "I'm committed to being responsible and accountable, and apologize for my actions."

Randy is a fine upstanding man with a great deal of talent. He has shared his good fortune unselfishly throughout his career and I find some of these remarks appalling to say the least. As a young teenager he did have some issues, but cleaned up his act and whether you want to acknowledge or not he became a super star. He has done a lot of good with his wealth....who of you can say the same? Randy had not been drinking for years and I'm sure the alcohol slipped up on him before he realized it. How many of you has that happened to, Super Bowl or not? Cut out the nasty remarks.

Hi. My name is Randy, and I'm here to tell you my fate.
One night after the Super Bowl I was partying out way too late.
Too much wine, too drunk to drive, I stopped into a church
where the local constabularies found me. Now my tail is in a lurch.

Oh Lord, can you help me?
I know that I done wrong.
    Woncha teach me a lesson
in the words of a country song?

    Yee-haw!

"That's just stupid. Rock came from country, so did jazz and blues."

Actually, you are factually incorrect. Country music is a derivative of folk and bluegrass. Rock-a-billy was an off-shoot of country music and it did evolve into rock 'n roll. But, jazz and blues are far more complex in their structure and neither evolved from country music. Blues is a derivative of jazz, more "pedestrian" and less structured than jazz. The foundation for jazz is far more complex than even classical music.

As an example, when I studied guitar I learned that classical guitar uses about 2,400 chord forms. Jazz uses about 7,000 chord forms, recognizing harmonic arrangements that are anathema to classical because of their dissonances.

You give country music far too much credit than it ever deserves.

Reminds me of two co-workers from a while back. I overheard them talking about how they knew all the tricks for driving home drunk. It's amazing how many people in this world have their priorities all messed up. Too many people think only of themselves and far too little of their fellow man.

I respect Randy for taking responsibility and apologizing. However, he was thinking only of himself and not his fellow man when he got behind the wheel. ALSO, who were the people he was with at this party? Apparently not REAL friends if they let him hop behind the wheel drunk, and they were apparently a little short on concern for their fellow man.

not along ago, when cops has self respect and the respect of the public, they would have pulled up along side him and said "good evening, are you ok"?. For which the replied would have been, "Yup, thanks for asking". Now, cops cant wait to ruin someones life if they have the chance to further their career, get a raise or fullfil some profit mandate. Guess his keys were not in the ignition or the car wa snot running or they would have given him a DUI.

So only Martians should apologize for their actions? "I'm only human" is what somebody says when they're trying to avoid taking responsibility for their actions. "Hey, wasn't MY fault. It's the fault of my being human."

After doing the wrong thing, he did the right thing by taking responsibility.

Well, unless he drove to the church parking lot BEFORE starting to drink, which I find highly unlikely, your statement fails the logic test. Realizing that one is too drunk to drive and then pulling over to park and sleep it off does not eliminate the fact that he drove drunk before finally realizing that he needed to stop driving. But, as I understand it, he was NOT charged with DWI or DUI, but rather for public intoxication, which means he was drunk in public.

"Your Honor, I was not drunk in public. I was drunk in a bar. They THREW me out in public!"

It's the users who abused that right, and for that they take it away. Besides... why do you need to make a comment about disgusting things... those jokes aren't funny if you overdo them... which is what all of you clowns have done.

The Facebook dilemma brought up on Yahoo I understand... we contribute to the site... but in this case... the only thing we "contribute" are comments. They don't help CNN do anything except monitor which comments are appropriate.

      Definition of crime:

      1. an act or omission prohibited and punished by law
      2. a. unlawful acts in general: a wave of crime

In Minnesota, that is a DWI or DUI, no matter if you are passed out cold, or just sitting, or standing outside your vehicle with your keys in your possession... w/ open bottle and depending on his blood alcohol, it may be a felony.... You cannot even sit in your car and listen to tunes in your own back yard and have a beer and you can get a DUI or DWI.
So, he is lucky he is in Texas and not here...although, I am sure he is going to get inattentive driving or a slap on the wrists as soon as he says he is entering rehab. blah blah blah....

He is a celebrity that is why he got a slap on the hand. Texas is hard on DUI and DWI. Being a celeb in Texas you get a slap on the wrist. Look at how many times Willie Nelson has been arrested in this state. He gets off with a small $500.00 fine most of the time and he usually gets asked to sing a song in the courtroom. lol Texas is nice to celeb's and follows the law to a T when it comes to it's regular residents.........Good Ole Boy country......

Eh, he's in (tiny) Sanger, TX and he's Randy Travis. I'm surprised they arrested him at all. Heck, if he was just a regular guy and the officer knew his folks, he'd probably have called them up to come get him. Not making light of a possible DWI but I lived in Denton (about 10 miles south of Sanger) for years and it's still very much a small town atmosphere.

So you don't have to actually be observed driving, to get a DWI? That's ridiculous! Of course you can get a DWI for driving a lawn mower on a public street while drunk, but at least that's operating a motor vehicle!

You can not get a DUI/DWI in Minnesota if you are standing outside your car drunk with keys in your possession like in your hands or in your pockets or purse. If you are inside the car with keys inside the car anywhere-your hands, pockets, purse, ignition, on the floor, in the glove box, etc THEN you can be arrested. You can get arrested for Public Intoxication/Public nusiance for standing next to your car drunk with keys in your possesion. There is no Attempted DUI as a charge in Minnesota.

      February 6, 2012 at 10:32 pm | Report abuse |
    • FromMN

I'm also from MN, and Robin and Trouble are both semi-correct.

It's pretty daft, but if you're in your car and your keys aren't, you can still get a DWI if your keys are within a certain distance of the vehicle. So in this case, Randy Travis likely would receive a DWI in MN.

If it's winter and you're drunk in MN, and for some reason need to smoke or sleep in your car, just remember to throw your keys as far away from you as possible before getting in.

Unlike the state that elects people like Michelle Bachmann and Jesse Ventura to public office, Texas is not yet Fascist enough to arrest somebody who is sitting in a car in their own backyard drinking alcohol.
