Were there any Oscar surprises?

The nominations for the 84th annual Academy Awards were announced Tuesday morning.

The nominees for best picture are “The Artist,” “The Descendants,” “The Help,” “Moneyball,” “Hugo,” “War Horse,” “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close,” “The Tree of Life” and “Midnight in Paris.”

The nominees for best director are Michel Hazanavicius (“The Artist”), Alexander Payne (“The Descendants”), Martin Scorsese (“Hugo”), Woody Allen (“Midnight in Paris”) and Terrence Malick (“The Tree of Life”).

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences have announced their nominees for the 84th Academy Awards.

Jim Carrey's daughter Jane auditions for 'Idol'

Talent runs in the family, and Jim Carrey isn't afraid to talk up his daughter Jane's vocal chops.

“My daughter is an incredible musician," he told CNN earlier this year of 24-year-old Jane. "Incredible singer-songwriter...She's amazing. And deep. Really thoughtful lyrics...So yeah, we come by it honestly."

On Sunday's "American Idol," Jane showed and proved what her dad has been raving about.
