The CNN team got an early start at the Sundance Film Festival on Friday with set up and the first live interview with David Oyelowo, one of the stars of “Red Tails."
Before he was interviewed by Kyra Phillips, the actor talked about the time he spent in Alabama screening the movie as well as how honored he was to be able to meet some of the actual men who flew the jets in World War II.
Later in the morning, Blythe Danner and Melanie Lynskey stopped by to tape an interview about their movie which opened the festival, “Hello I Must Be Going.” Danner plays the mother to Lynskey’s character and the pair discussed the dynamic of playing those roles and how much fun they had working together.
Behind the scenes, Lynskey and I talked about our mutual love for my hometown of Memphis, Tennessee and Danner said that this was the first Sundance where she actually had a film playing, although she’s been to the festival in the past to support the movies of her children, Gwenyth Paltrow and Jake Paltrow.
The CNN team also headed to the Bing Bar to see a special performance by Jason Mraz. The singer-songwriter talked about the collaboration between ASUS and the Intel Corporation, in which the two companies partnered up to sponsor a competition where people from around the world submitted their ideas of “The Incredible."
Mraz and the winner, Daniel Hedlund, hosted a chat at the Bing Bar where they spoke to the intimate crowd about Hedlund’s account of his battle with stage 4 bone cancer. Afterwards, Mraz played an acoustic sst, showcasing a few new songs and some old favorites. Spotted at the Bing Bar was NCIS: Los Angeles star Eric Christian Olsen.
With the day winding down, the CNN team prepared to get ready for the night’s events, which include a party with Mary J. Blige, a concert by the Civil Wars and more.
