While you were working...Today's news you might've missed:
Ryan Seacrest 'can't imagine life' without 'Idol'The "Today" show may be considering Ryan Seacrest as a potential successor to Matt Lauer should the position become available, but the Hollywood heavyweight is still devoted to "American Idol." He said as much at during the Television Critics Association's winter tour, explaining to press, “I can tell you I can’t imagine life without 'American Idol.' I have a deal with NBC Universal already…but I can’t comment on that.” Talk then turned to "Idol's" competition, “The X-Factor” and “The Voice,” and that's when the gloves came off! 'The Firm' would have been great, years agoEditor's Note: The post below contains spoilers for the January 8 premiere of "The Firm." When John Grisham's legal thriller "The Firm" was released in 1991, the concept for an action-packed plot set in a lawyer's world was fairly new. The book follows a young lawyer named Mitch McDeere, who becomes a whistle-blower for the FBI on the activities of his law firm, which is a front for the Chicago mob. "The Firm" brought Grisham so much recognition that it was adapted into a successful 1993 movie of the same name starring Tom Cruise and Gene Hackman. But it's only now, 20 years after the book was published, that we're getting the TV version of the tale. Christina Aguilera responds to physique critiquesWith more than a decade in show business under her belt, Christina Aguilera is all too familiar with the criticism that comes with being in the spotlight. While speaking at the winter Television Critics Association press event for her NBC singing competition "The Voice," Aguilera said snide remarks about her weight aren't bringing her down. "Women, we are definitely under a microscope and under massive scrutiny," the 31-year-old singer told the press. "As long as I am happy in my own skin, that is all the confirmation I need." Jay-Z performs song on his 'greatest creation,' announces arrival of baby BlueJay-Z has rapped about making "the song cry," and now it seems like he is aiming to get fans welling up with his latest song, a tribute to his newborn daughter. The rapper and his wife, singer Beyonce, had a baby girl over the weekend, the couple announced in a statement Monday. "We are happy to announce the arrival of our beautiful daughter, Blue Ivy Carter, born on Saturday, January 7, 2012," the pair say in a post on Beyonce's website. "Her birth was emotional and extremely peaceful, we are in heaven. She was delivered naturally at a healthy 7 pounds and it was the best experience of both of our lives. We are thankful to everyone for all your prayers, well wishes, love and support." George Clooney lines up WWII dramaGeorge Clooney turned in two lauded performances last year with "The Ides of March" and "The Descendants," but he shows no signs of slowing down. The actor announced at the Palm Springs International Film Festival on Saturday that he has another movie in the works called "The Monuments Men" that will have him pulling double duty as the co-star and the director, the L.A. Times reports. "The Monuments Men" is adapted from the Robert Edsel's 2009 book of the same name, and focuses on the art historians who became heroes during World War II as they tracked down prized artwork taken by Hitler. Katy Perry: My heart is happy againAs Katy Perry The singer tweeted on Saturday - her first post since her estranged husband Russell Brand filed for divorce in late December - that her spirits had been lifted by kind words sent to her from across the globe. "I am so grateful for all the love and support I've had from people around the world," she wrote. "You guys have made my heart happy again." Don Cheadle makes 'House of Lies' one to watchShowtime has been promoting "House of Lies" for what seems like the better part of a year, so there was a lot of anticipation for Sunday night's series premiere (which – as Showtime and Starz tend to do with new series – was also available online and free to many cable subscribers). But the show, about a team of management consultants led by Marty (Oscar-nominated actor and executive producer Don Cheadle), crammed a lot of plot into the first episode. So much so that there really wasn't any time left for two of Marty's employees, played by Ben Schwartz ("Parks and Recreation") and Josh Lawson ("The Wedding Party"), to shine. Much of the focus was on Marty himself. It's not entirely clear from the promos, but after watching the show, Cheadle is perfectly cast as the slick Marty Kaan. (Marty also appears to be the first sitcom character since "Saved by the Bell" to have Zack Morris' "time out" power.) Fans speculate meaning behind Beyonce name 'Blue Ivy'From the moment she announced her pregnancy last August to the often-reported though not yet confirmed by her camp delivery on Saturday, Beyonce and Jay-Z's baby has been winning the Internet. And on Sunday, the day following Beyonce's reported delivery of a baby girl named Blue Ivy Carter in New York, the rumored name sparked plenty of online conversation as fans tried to dissect the meaning. (Some reports suggested that the name was "Ivy Blue," but a tweet from Beyonce's pal Gwyneth Paltrow appeared to clear up the confusion: "It's Blue Ivy Carter!" the actress wrote to a curious Twitter follower.) |
