One 'Broke Girl's' food service past

This past fall, TV viewers came to know actress Beth Behrs as one half of the wise-cracking duo on the popular new sitcom, "2 Broke Girls."

The 26-year-old plays a former rich girl-turned-waitress named Caroline, who had zero experience working at a diner (or anything remotely like it) prior to getting down on her luck.

In reality, Behrs told CNN, she'd once joined the ranks of other struggling actors and spent some time working in the food service industry.

“I was a server, a couple of times," she said. "I worked at Chili’s and I worked at [a taco restaurant] here in L.A. I wasn’t very good at it, but I definitely experienced it. It wasn’t my favorite job, it’s certainly a hard job, so I feel for all those waiters out there who can identify with the rude customers and stuff that we have on our show because I’ve definitely been there."

Behrs said that her first night at Chili's didn't exactly go smoothly: "My first night as a waitress, I stupidly put all the beer glasses on one tray, but they were those really tall beer glasses. So as soon as I picked the tray up, they all fell down. And they fell all over the table. Why a manager gave me a table of 10 on my first night is still what bothers me about this story. Really? I went to the bathroom and cried, it was the worst."

Behrs said that her food service career only lasted a few months. "It definitely wasn’t for me, but I could relate to that when I was filming the pilot and I dropped all the plates during a couple of takes. I could not keep those in my hands!" she said, adding that she hopes such moments make it to a DVD blooper reel. "Caroline’s not very good at [waitressing] either."

One burning question about Caroline is when we might see her beloved horse, Chestnut, again (he is spending the winter in a barn, and hence, off the show). Behrs reassured fans that he will return in the spring, and also talked about how the horse (named Rocky) regards her and her co-star, Kat Dennings.

“It took a while to get used to riding him. Kat and I took some lessons because neither of us are horseback riders," she said. "Now when we see him on set he knows us, and he knows when they say action, he perks right up. When there’s another person in the scene, he always acts protective of me and Kat, he doesn’t like the other people. It’s cute. We’ve become close with Rocky."

"2 Broke Girls" is back on the air Monday night, with an episode where Caroline becomes an extreme couponer. As for the rest of this first season, Behrs is most excited about a new recurring cast member, best known for "Legally Blonde" and "American Pie": Jennifer Coolidge.

“She is absolutely hilarious. She’s always been one of my comedy heroes. To be able to work with her has been incredible," she said, noting that her scenes might also be worthy of a blooper reel. "Around her I cannot keep it together. I lose it."

The common name "horse-chestnut" (often unhyphenated) is reported as having originated from the erroneous belief that the tree was a kind of chestnut (though in fact only distantly related), together with the observation that eating the fruit cured horses of chest complaints. *`^^
