Friday Top Five: Best New Year's Eve movies

There is a film in theaters right now about nothing but various scenarios that all take place on New Year's Eve, but this isn't about that movie.

Instead, we're going to look back at some flicks that have moments devoted to the spirit of December 31: wistful recollection of moments now past, anticipation for what the future holds, the sense of impending (and in one case, tragic) change and the urge to party like tomorrow's a holiday and you won't have to wake up for work.

Take a look at our list, and leave your own favorites in the comments!

1. "When Harry Met Sally" (1989) - We know some of you have Harry's New Year's Eve speech to Sally memorized. And when we say "you," we're also including ourselves.

2. "The Apartment" (1960) - "Shut up and deal" should probably be invoked at NYE parties everywhere this weekend.

3. "Radio Days" (1987) - Woody Allen's film about the bygone days of radio is about as reminiscent as it gets.

4. "Bridget Jones's Diary" (2001) - The premise of the film all begins at a fateful New Year's Day party, and by the end, the titular protagonist is ready to start fresh.

5. "200 Cigarettes" (1999) This isn't a scene as much as it's the plot of the entire movie, but the preparations and expectations for NYE ring true.

    What about 3D movies?
You come a lot closer to the actors and story in 3D movies.
After I found out i could play 3D movies on my iPad, i prefer 3D movies if possible.

Any suggestions for good 3D movies on 3D?

  6. Rat Pack

I'm with Mitch. The original "Oceans 11" set during New Years Eve was a top NYE movie. Vegas history, the Rat pack with Shirley McClaine, and a quite fetching Angie Dickinson in 1960. Great flick.

My favorite was and still is THE BODYGUARD. Always wanted romance for NYE and that one did it. Too bad Whitney isn't what she was in that movie. Kevin's still hot though!

We watch the Thin Man movies on New Year's Eve. Myrna Loy was awesome!!! They are such fun movies and remind us that there used to be quality filmmaking with classy stars and well written scripts.

  20. Woody Allen

sucks big time! His movie shouldn't have even been on here. In fact, this list sucks. This person just threw something together fast because they probably wanted to go home early or to get to some little party the company was having. That's my take on this list.

All of the entries listed pale in comparison to the best New Year's Eve movie ever – The Poseidon Adventure.

Yes! I always watch that on NYE; it's still such a great disaster movie. Great cast too!

OMG Hene Hackman's "Not this woman" scene makes me cry every time. As does Ernest Borgnine's "You had a lot of guts lady. A lot of guts."

No one mentioned the best New Year's movie ever-the original Oceans Eleven with Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis. Along with being the ultimate Rat Pack movie it also includes Dino singing "Ain't that a kick in the Head."

I choose Sleepless in Seattle. The scene where Tom Hanks has a drink with his departed wife is very heartwarming and I think, a brave choice for a popular movie.

This is the way it should have ended. In the end, when Sam tells his son Jonah, "maybe we can get a dog" and then they meet up with Annie. They get in the elevator – The camera zooms in on Jonah. Just before the doors close, he looks up at his Dad and says, " Can we still get that dog?" LOL
