'Star Wars' religion rises in Czech Republic

A “Star Wars” faith, Knights of the Jedi, seems to be gaining traction.

According to CzechPosition.com, the results of the Czech Republic's new census show that 15,070 citizens claim Knights of the Jedi as their religion.

Another 1.08 million people identified as Catholics on the survey, while 4.8 million respondents didn’t list a faith.

According to the Knights of the Jedi website, its adherents believe in the intangible energy made famous by the "Star Wars" films. The Force, they explain, is "an energy field created by all living things. It surrounds us, penetrates us and binds the galaxy together."

Additionally, the site points out that the idea behind The Force "is a concept that most religions of the world concur with. Some refer to it as their deity, some refer to it as a life force, but the one thing nearly all religions agree with is that there exists a single unifying force."

The Czech Republic isn’t the only country to boast followers of the “Star Wars” faith. According to Time, Great Britain and New Zealand also list the Jedi Church on formal surveys. Over 390,000 Britons said that they practiced the religion in 2001.

Thanks for this glorious article. One other thing is that most digital cameras arrive equipped with any zoom lens that permits more or less of your scene for being included by simply 'zooming' in and out. These changes in target length are reflected within the viewfinder and on huge display screen at the back of the particular camera.

I love Star Wars but the facts of evolution will crush this new faith as it has the others. We are the fifth ape in the animal kingdom. It's nice to think we happen to be something greater, but that's just not fact of reality. Ignorance is the darkside of force.

I can dig the universal energy thing. But folks are saying it's as plausible as any other religion....and I'd have to disagree, simply because the ancient, somewhat mysterious origins of a lot of religions are what bring about the concept of faith and all that fun stuff. It's hard to find mystery or faith in a modern movie made by a still-living man who acknolwedges it as fiction....hmmmm.

But I know ya'll are just insecure and resentful toward religion, so keep the barage of clone comments coming. Trolllllin' on!

I llove it... At least there's no crazy book *cough* of lies *cough* to read, no door-to-door Watchtower sales people, and no crazy tie wearing bike riders in the Jedi Church!

As the great jedi Obiwan said, "Only siths deal in absolutes." Problem; that statement is an absolute. A dirty dealer that jedi he is.

I'll buy it as a religion just as soon as someone completes the basic Jedi task of building a light saber. You do NOT get to become a Jedi without doing that.

Big whoop. I filled out "Jedi" on my Canadian census in 2006. By the way, what is with the losers who constantly bash religions? Are you that insecure about your own beliefs?

I believe in duct tape. It, too, has a dark side and a light side, and binds the galaxy together. I'll stick with that. ;-)

People did this on the Canadian census about 7 or 8 years ago. It's nothing new.

It's probably just another way for Lucas to make more money off of his tired, worn out movie.
