It looks like the Web won't be the saving grace for soap fans, as Variety reports that ABC's canceled series "All My Children" and "One Life to Live" will not find new life online.
"All My Children" aired its final episode on September 23, and was expected to launch again online thanks to media/production company Prospect Park. "One Life to Live" was to face the same digital rebirth after it airs its last episode in January.
However, Prospect Park says in a statement, "It is with great disappointment that we are suspending our aspirations to revive 'One Life to Live' and 'All My Children' via online distribution."
The company goes on to explain that there were a number of hurdles they couldn't jump, including the "contractual demands of the guilds, coupled with the program's inherent economic challenges."
The company says they believed the "timing was right" for their venture, but they couldn't find the backing needed. "We believe we exhausted all reasonable options apparent to us, but despite enormous personal, as well as financial, cost to ourselves, we failed to find a solution."
Trouble was on the horizon earlier this month, as Entertainment Weekly reported that "AMC's" online return was being delayed. Prospect Park was aiming to start new episodes of the soap in January, but was reportedly having issues getting some of the big name stars to sign on.
Susan Lucci, for one, reportedly declined to continue with the show as it moved to the Web.
That is most unfortunate. I am highly disappointed that OLTL could not be continued via internet. I have been in love with the show since 2004, when I watched with my mom while taking a quick break from my weekend video game binge. I haven't always been able to watch it everyday, but I always made sure my mother, and a few female friends that also watch it, filled me in on the important details. As much as it saddens me that the show will really be ending with January, it's time to move on to another hobby. I will remain faithful to the show until its end, and OLTL will always be one of my few favorite TV shows, as I don't watch much TV. However, when it ends, it ends, and I accept that.
THESE B!T(HES NEED THE LORD IN THEIRE LIVES. AFTER A GOOD HOUR OR TWO ON THEIR KNESS PRAYING TO THE LORD, THEY SHOULD GET UP AND CLEAN THEIR HOUSES AND COOK SOME DINNER FOR THEIR MAN WHO HAS BEEN WORKING HARD ALL DAY. HE WOULD ENJOY COMING HOME TO BE TREATED LIKE A KING IN HIS CASTLE. GIRLS IF YOU TREAT YOUR MAN RIGHT HE WON'T STEP OUT ON YOUR FAT LAZY AZ$EZ
Clearly you are a sick pervert who not only cannot get (or keep) a good woman, you are as far from someone who has a communication with any higher power as I've ever seen. Just typing a reply to your ignorant post makes me want to get a Tetanus shot. Vermin. Calling you a troll would be a compliment.
Thirty plus years as a loyal One Life To Live viewer. So sad to see the show leave and these soapy stories unresolved or bluntly ended. ABC decided our household was not a valid marketing demographic, despite the longevity of many of the manufacturers and consumer products showcased which fill our pantry, 'fridge and laundry closet at this very moment. It's a shame they dropped us when they dropped these two beloved shows. Now the only ABC programs we seek out are Caste and Body of Proof. Best wishes to everyone involved with OLTL and thanks for the memories.
@Nurse Roswell, some extras talk which places them on a different union scale depending on if they are SAG or AFTRA. I'm on the lot everyday and see how much money some shows cost to produce. It is money in and money out. Advertisers will not pay top dollar even if 2-4 million people are "watching" daytime tv. To those of you who TiVo , that doesn't count because they want you to purchase their product soon, so when you watch your expensive soaps a few days later, the advertisers dollar is wasted, hence money in and money out. Let's not even get into crew salary and daily overtime, transportation cost, craft services 3 times a day for a 14-17 hour day, equipment leasing, oh and CONTRACTS! There are lots of costs with any show, but they viewship takes care of the money. No viewership no money no soap. It's not rocket science, it's dollars and cents, or " sense" in shareholder language!
Thanks for shedding a light on the broader production cost issue. My only comment would be to wonder why these dying shows continued to add new actors and plot lines rather than narrow the focus and bring closure to characters and relationships the viewers have loved and been loyal to for decades.
Have one last episode where Dustin Hoffman comes pout and pulls his wig off and tells all these women that none of this is real, it's all just made up stories.
It boggles the mind to think that these third-rate pieces of rubbish are even still on the air in 2011!! WHO watches TV in the daytime anyway? Fat people with no jobs nor houses to maintain??? Good grief! Take all of them off the air!!
First of all, you're an A$$. Second of all, just because you don't enjoy a show doesn't mean it isn't entertaining or special to someone else. If they only produced TV programs to your taste, there wouldn't be much variety. Thirdly, I'll bet your loutish stereotype of fat, housebound, lazy people probably comes to closer to what you are. Camping out behind a keyboard and monitor for hours is no more healthy than on the sofa with a remote. And finally, you're an A$$.
Hey, back off my soaps. This fat lady happens to love AMC & OLTL. And you may not have been let out of the basement lately but there have been great advancements in the world of technology. There are actually devices that allow you to record televised material and – wait for it – watch it back later, like when you get home from work.
oh no – not "dogs rule" again – why arent you dead yet ? just kill yourself already !
well abc can go to hell and the a hole mr. fron can drop dead..... i knew the pp would not help us fans all talk .
balls' in you court
networks still running other soaps, and OWN is still on the air
if no AMC,OLTL And Oprah on abc,
then all will be forgotten
tv will have nothing but sports and food shows
and we will watch what we want on the net
This should come as a surprise to no one. Within 3 to 5 years all three networks will have completely abandoned the format. When a show like "Chew" is getting better ratings than the soap it replaced, you know it's all over.
All good things must end. Soaps had a great run and now they're done, an era has ended. It's cool, make way for something new
Gee, thanks for leaving us hanging as to who got shot at the end! ABC should have ended it with closure, and then let Prospect Park start with a new life for all. A whole new storyline! What a disappointment in ABC's way of ending AMC! Boo! Hiss!
We should try to stay relevant to the times, which the writers did not do very well. It appears that they used magic that was so unbelievable to draw and keep elevated ratings, which no longer worked. How can you have a performer at 19 still try at 60 to act like they are 19! Clearly, it is time to move on, and the time is now.
What's your problem? You complain when we say mean things and now your'r complaining and saying hateful things when someone says something nice. Omg you sure do you have issues. Well, have a great Thanksgiving anway.
AMC is not really gone; it will reappear in about three years and explain its absence by stating it was in a coma induced by General Hospital's attack on Erica's evil half brother during his tour of duty in Afghanistan.
Well done my man.
In response to this news, OWS immediately sent out a flurry of robocalls and demanded an nationwide strike to protest this.
I'm thankful for articles like this. More accurately, I'm thankful for the comments that idiotic housewives living in trailers in South Carolina and Texas make....
Not to mention the idiotic responses from guys who no doubt live in their parents basement.
Easy fix. Just tell that jackhole in the white house that the shows are too big to fail and he'll throw as much taxpayer money at you as you need
i dont like what they are doing and there are going to be alot of mad FANS!!!!!like me when you take oltl off that is the best one out of all of them.i will never watch ABC again.
Jesus Christ. I can't believe they killed Matthew.
I know. Right? I was shocked. Just like that, another character gone. Destiny is going to be wrecked. OLTL has just as many bizarre plotlines and characters as any other daytime serial, but I will miss it very much. It's something familiar and a great distraction from the stressers of life. I'd much rather spend 44 minutes a day with the residents of Llanview than on the internet or with a game controller stuck in my hands.
Television is a dying format and they're just prolonging the inevitable. Why bother to wait to tune into shows at a specific time when you can just watch them online at your convenience?
OK, for hopefully the last time can somebody tell me who's real, who's not and who's the troll. Oh, and who is more than one person. Thanks.
Whatz yer problem? Y r u spreading rumorz about Peace? U r nothing but a troublemaker!! FYI Peace is fine and healthy but really itz nune of yer businezz!! Stop it u azzhole! Hope u have a louzy Thanksgiving for yer thoughtfulnezz! Bah humbug!!
Who are you calling a ignorant fool? Make yourslef clear. ppl are on phones n cant see who u are replying to or r u too much of a p$$ uy to do so
Who r u talking to?
@Peace: Happy Thanksgiving to you, your family and friends!
No don't compare me to Peace. She is a good person. We are different like night and day, both in a good way of course, just different. I never had a problem with her. She is cool in my book. She is okay? C didn't come back? Happy Thanksgiving.
I don't care for AMC the writing is down hill. But OLTL had some greatactors and plotlines.
You can see a steady decline in interest in the shows by ABC over the years. My wife showed me old episodes of OLTL from years back on YouTube.
One had a glamouroys wedding the other a party at a frat house another a nightclub.
Each old episode clearly had high production values and investment. They had dozens or more extras (many talking) they destroyed sets in arguments they "spent money to make money"
today it's totally different. If there's a fight, the actors might throw papers around the room.. Or "carefully" knock err lay down a chair..(can't break the furniture or glasses that is expensive!)
the major night clubs on busy nights look deserted by any standard... There are few if any extras.
Oltl had managed to keep my interest (I'm a 30 married male) with it's exciting writing despite the fact it reeked low budget and disrespect by abc.
I would pay $5-10 a month for a channel online or other that showed oltl for my wife an I. A lot of others would too.
People who say move on an find better tv... Like what? There is nothing but reality, talk or judge shows on during daytime.
Ummmm..... "extras" don't talk. Union rules and all that. If they talk then they're not extras.
whoever deems these comments appropriate should be fired.
Then put it back on the air cause The Chew Sucks!! We have been lied to yet again.
Passions was better.
Soap operas going off the air, once taboo social conventions becoming more acceptable.
The older generation is finally dying off,and all their crap is going with it
Yeah, thank goodness we'll still have the younger generations contribution to television success – Jersey Shore, anything with the Kardashians, whatever the newest teenage pregnancy show is.
Plus you are so incredible that you dont even know. You make this world awesome. No kidding. We pray your C is all cured and you are doing so good you live in happiness and comfort forever. You make the world a better place. Thanks.
Well if you are Peace and Beautiful Vixen will you marry me? You are easily the most wonderful and incredible person I have ever encountered. Plus your sister is a living angel. Thank you for making our lives and the world a better place. Thanks for you being here.
There is no AMC with out Susan Lucci.
Sarah Michelle – ABC/Disney ALSO cancelled SOAPNET, effective Jan. 2012. May they rot in hell.
Thanks – I didn't know that....
stfu Nanook you whiny imbecile
Good try Prospect Place...we had hope for a little while anyway. Shame on ABC/Disney for cancelling in the first place. They can rot in hell for all we soap fans care. Oh, She Stinks (appropriate name), the two soaps together had over 7 million viewers...some of us for over 40 years !
You are truly the living embodiment of all things stupid. I peruse multiple news sites, and you only post comments on stories about soap operas (clue #1 that you're not the sharpest tool in the shed). You typically post something along the lines of ABC, Brian Frons or anyone who made the decision to cancel soaps "rotting in hell". So the fact that you equate the cancelling of a soap to things like, the holocaust & serial murder is clue #2 that you're not the brightest bulb in the pack. The final nail in your moronic coffin is your consistent and exaggerated emotional response to a tv show going off the air. All tv shows come to an end eventually, and the fact that you're so overly dramatic and devastated about it reveals not only a low class & shallow existence, but immeasurable idiocy. Soaps were dinosaurs: too expensive to produce with too little viewership = no profit. I know you can't possibly begin to understand that business concept so let me put in terms you might grasp: soap gone bye-bye forever. Not only am I pleased that these stupid soaps are finally off the air, I'm also pleased that this will finally put an end to your childish temper tantrums. You are truly an embarassment to yourself and you're far too dumb to see it. Move on Nanook – it's over.
Why don't they run them on the Soap Network?.... so people can watch if they want to...
This is awful news- My family and I had been looking forward to AMC being online- and for those that say no one watched the show...you need to do some research~~~ What a shame- Now we will never know who Junior shot...I wonder if they would've ended the show different if they thought that it really was going to be over over....sigh...sad sad news for us real fans.
I bet you have never responded to a story about TRUE human injustices, but this you took the time to write a short novella about. It's just a show people, it's not a tsunami, or an earthquake, or war.
This soaps are huge in Europe , Asia Missle East & Latin America. Seriously guys ? No oil money or International investors can save La Loca Lucci ?!
Did you really mean to type Missle East? Freudian slip perhaps
Some needs to ask Oprah if she would take on the soap operas on her network
Nah. She needs the ratings bit she's business savvy . Budget concious and quality driven.
@BIG HOSS, Wrong. im Attila the Hun, charlie crack, peace, n ur mama's azz
It went off the air because no one watched these shows – move on, its just a TV show. Watch something else.
You're an idiot. You have no idea what you're talking about.
Shut up you ignorant fool
She Stinks: Shut up you ignorant fool
Sorry, haters, but She Stinks is quite correct.
The ratings were a shell of their former selves. The ratings for The View were double the ratings for AMC. What does that tell you? Soaps have huge casts with big contracts. They shoot new episodes year round. That equates to MAJOR money. If the ratings are falling, and the advertising revenues aren't enough to pay for the show, the show is going to get cancelled. A network has absolutely ZERO reason to keep a show on the air if it is losing money.
It really *is* that simple.
You're exactly right. These soapies are such idiots.
On another blog BV admitted to being Mr. Ed, starfire, and a guy. I always knew there was just one troll here.
You are just jealous. My celebrity status is enmeshed for all time.
YES ! FIRSTY FOR THANKSGIVING !
Mom must be so proud of your accomplishments. Because I've got a feeling this is as big as they come.
