Neil Gaiman cranking out 'tween lit'? Only on 'The Simpsons'Fantasy writer and Geek Out favorite Neil Gaiman's work might be just about as far away from the tween fare of "Twilight" as anything that also bears the "fantasy" genre tag. But don't expect Gaiman, who will play an animated version of himself Sunday on an episode of "The Simpsons" that sends up the Stephenie Meyer stories, to take any shots at the sparkly vampire series. In fact, he says they're staples around the Gaiman residence. 'Newsies' heads to BroadwayThe musical adaptation of hit Disney movie “Newsies” is headed for the Great White Way, reports the New York Times. The Harvey Fierstein-adapted stage production enjoyed a successful fall run at New Jersey’s Paper Mill Playhouse, so the scruffy paperboys are packing up their floppy caps and tattered vests and heading to Broadway. The turn-of-the-century musical will open on Broadway in March, Disney Theatrical Productions announced Tuesday. “Newsies” will play at the Nederlander Theatre through June, but if successful, the run could be extended. The 1992 movie starred Christian Bale, Bill Pullman, Robert Duvall and Ann-Margret, and it’s become a bit of a cult classic for children of the early '90s. “Newsies” is based on the 1899 true story of newspaper-selling kiddos fighting Big Business, and with movements like Occupy Wall Street resonating with the public, it’s great timing for the feisty premise. While you were working...Today's news you might've missed:
Scarlett Johansson to directAnother day, another starlet set to direct. Indiewire reports that Scarlett Johansson will helm an adaptation of Truman Capote's novel “Summer Crossing.” Capote’s a tall order for a first-time director. But 26-year-old Johansson is nothing if not ambitious; remember her foray into music? She went straight for Tom Waits. ScarJo has also worked with quite a few esteemed filmmakers. Woody Allen, The Coen Brothers, Christopher Nolan and Cameron Crowe, to name a few. Plus, she has Oscar-winning producer Barry Spikings (“The Deer Hunter”) and Peter D. Graves on board. Dean McDermott tweets Tori Spelling toplessReality star Dean McDermott made a boo boo on Twitter Wednesday, reports the New York Daily News. Tori Spelling’s husband posted a pic of son Liam… but Tori was topless in the background. The photo is of 4-year-old Liam mugging for the camera, but the little tyke was photobombed by mom’s boobs! We’ll assume it was an accidental flashing (Tori recently gave birth to the couple’s third child and could have been breastfeeding), and an accident on Dean’s part. Dean, who has 75,000 Twitter followers, took the image down quickly, but a screengrab means Spelling's breasts will be on the Internet forever. Drama, tears and attitude on 'The X Factor'I have never shouted and screamed during "The X Factor" in the past, but Thursday night things changed. I got mad. I got angry. And I screamed. Most of my feelings came during the last 10 minutes of the show. But let's not get into that just yet. Let’s start with the wonderful way the show began, with all 10 finalists taking the stage to sing Queen’s “We Will Rock You” in unison. They certainly rocked it, especially Astro and Rachel Crow, though I’m sure their cuteness factor helped to go a long way. Regis Philbin bids farewell to 'Live!'After 28 years, Regis Philbin has vacated his chair as co-host of "Live! With Regis and Kelly," leaving behind the effervescent Kelly Ripa to man the "Live!" ship with a series of guest hosts - at least for now. Friday's episode of "Live!" was a farewell celebration, with big names like Donald Trump, Katie Couric, Tony Danza and of course Philbin's former "Live!" co-host, Kathie Lee Gifford, all in the audience. New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg also made an appearance, presenting 80-year-old Bronx-bred Philbin with the key to the city "on behalf of 8.4 million New Yorkers." Sheldon and Amy make it official on 'Big Bang Theory'Thursday night's "Big Bang Theory" was a pretty momentous occasion for Sheldon, to say the least. Our favorite geek now has his first girlfriend. Amy forced the issue by accepting a date with Stuart, the comic book store clerk. As he said, "She didn't look through me with soul-sucking, ball-shriveling hatred and contempt. I like that in a woman." Woody Woodpecker movie in developmentAccording to the Hollywood Reporter, classic cartoon character Woody Woodpecker may be staging a comeback. Universal-based animation house Illumination Entertainment (“Despicable Me,” next year’s “The Lorax”) is reportedly working on a feature film starring the rambunctious red woodpecker. Woody's an old showbiz vet: the crazy bird made his debut in 1940, and was a hit in World War II-era America. Baby meets Lady Gaga, criesDespite the popularity Lady Gaga's costumes have among the diapered set, the superstar singer seemed to scare one London baby off. According to the Daily Mail, Gaga was emerging from the studio where she taped her appearance on Alan Carr's "Chatty Man" show Wednesday when the parents of baby girl Loissa handed her off to the 25-year-old star. (Photo at the link.) Gaga was wearing a more demure outfit than has been her usual look in the past, dressed in a gold and green jacket, black pants, platform heels, large black sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed black hat to top it all off. |
