Ex-porn star Sasha Grey: I won't stop reading to kids

Former porn star Sasha Grey caught flak for reading to schoolchildren last week, but TMZ reports that Grey is defending her public service work and plans to continue.

Sasha says she’ll keep promoting literacy through the organization “Read Across America” despite the negative reactions of some because of her XXX past.

"I committed to this program with the understanding that people would have their own opinions about what I have done, who I am and what I represent," she says in a statement.

Parents complained after Grey – who’s been out of the porn industry for two years – read to first graders at Emerson Elementary in Compton, California, last week. The star has since spoken out about the backlash.

The 23-year-old actress - if you haven't seen her X-rated work, you'll likely remember her from her "Entourage" stint - says she “will not live in fear” of her porn past, and emphasizes that she’s more than just her adult films.

"I am an actor. I am an artist. I am a daughter. I am a sister. I am a partner. I have a past that some people may not agree with, but it does not define who I am," she added in her statement.

She continued: "I believe in the future of our children, and I will remain an active supporter and participant in education-focused initiatives."

When all of her "work" is off the internet, then she can read to my kids.

Best part of this article is learning that she's 23 and has been out of the biz for 2 years, meaning these sites actually aren't lying when they make the barely legal claims... viva la internet!

"...if you haven't seen her X-rated work, you'll likely remember her from her 'Entourage' stint...." Oh, sure, because THAT's a show kids watch. The whole point of these things is to say, "Look, kids! This person likes to read!" at which point the kids ask, "So who is this person? Why should this person matter to me?" And believe you me, the majority answer to that is not "because of her career on 'Entourage'."

I'm glad that she is committed to education. However, the controversy surrounding it will prompt kids to ask why she is disliked and kids shouldn't be exposed to that conversation.

My thought is that at least we know the complainers are reading something and thus can read...and probably an adult read to them when they were young – wonder if the children see them reading and will follow their example.

Hmmmm Sasha Grey reading to children seems to be more noble and rewarding than watching an episode of the Kardashian's who basically do nothing for millions of dollars.

@Dave.....My sentiments exactly. How many of the complaining parents are going to an ELEMENTARY school in COMPTON, CALIFORNIA to READ....READ, NOT PERFORM BUT READ.....to children? Where do the complaining parents live, in COMPTON? I doubt it. If my children are at school and she is reading children's books to them, I say more power to her and the school system to allow her to read. My children love to hear their parents read to them and are always bringing books to us to read. And although they can't read themselves, they still try to imitate us reading. Come on people, or so-called COMPLAINING PARENTS.

Never heard of her. But at least she is showing some real positive changes in her life by moving out of p or n and into mainstream acting and helping the community. Why would parents complain about that? What is hiding in your closet, parents?

I believe that Ms. Grey has done more to support local schools than more than 50% of parents. This women might motivate one more child to graduate from high school and get a college degree. I'm involved with my kids education and have met all of their teachers and this women has done more than I have in almost 12 years of my kids going to school. If you don't want her reading to your kids, get off your lazy butt and volunteer at a local school

I don't know about that, Chris. You ever see some of her work? I'm guessing most guys would be thrilled if they could talk their wives/girlfriends/whatevers into her repertoire. There's a reason she was the biggest star in the adult film industry. That said, I say let her read to the kids. They're far more likely to do what she did for a living than to become a CEO, so they need to get used to the role model.

My mom is mad because I stepped through the floor of our trailer. I think it was rotted but my mom said a floor doesnt rot in just 2 years. It is neat because now when I feed our dogs I can just pour some dogfood down thru the hole. It is like an invention. Our dogs sure like it up under the trailer. I guess it is comfy for them up under there. Weve fixed the underpinning several times but they keep pulling it back. Dogs are messy.

these kids don't even know who she is or what she's done in her past, so why should it matter? it'll only be a big deal to them if their parents make it a big deal. heck, i didn't even know who she was until this article and i'm 26, meaning parents who know her have probably seen her work and shouldn't be saying anything.

IIt seems at least on the surface you have some strange problem where you connect this article to a political figure or party. If you read the whole article no political figures/parties are mentioned.

Actually, the connection is incredibly clear. Bush is (in)famous for that 9/11 scene when reading to an elementary school class. He (like many politicians) doesn't necessarily have a reputation for explicit honesty. Ms. Grey, despite her racy former profession, is strikingly honest about her past - and the value in her continuing to support literacy for the youth of our nation.

Read up, LOL, your snide response was offbase and misplaced. Bang.
