Adriana Lima cautions teens against extreme dieting

Model Adriana Lima raised eyebrows when she recently admitted to the U.K.'s Telegraph that she adheres to a liquid diet before the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show.

Adriana, 30, told the U.K. paper that she goes on a nine-day protein shake and water diet and works out twice a day to prep for the show. Twelve hours before the runway, she added, she ditches liquids entirely.

But now the model is warning youngsters not to replicate her regime, according to People magazine.

"Those teenagers out there, don't go starving yourself or only drinking liquids. Don't do that please," she told ET Canada on Thursday.

Lima says her initial diet description was a “misunderstanding,” and that she allows herself to have coffee, water and cake before shows.

The new mom also rationalized her twice-daily workouts and protein shakes to E! News, emphasizing that an extreme diet is just part of her job, much like it would be for an athlete:

"I know it's very intense but ... I just have an athlete's mind and I appreciate doing this thing," she said of dieting to model lingerie. "It's not that I do crazy diets throughout the year. I just do it for this particular thing. After this show, I become normal again."

Excellent read, I just passed this onto a friend who was doing a little research on that. And he just bought me lunch because I found it for him smile Therefore let me rephrase that: Thank you for lunch!

Seriously cocaine? You people need to give them somewhat of credit for doing what they do.

I am proud of Adrianna Lima for coming out and saying that she does diet before big shows. More models need to do that rather than say they eat normal all the time. Also, people need to understand this is their job and they will do anything to keep that job just as I would or anyone else would do.

She's a supermodel. She has to look that way to work, and being a Victoria Secret model is probably a lot harder. I can see the extreme diet just prior to the runway show, but go back to normal eating after the show is finished. It's like photography where they can airbrush the 5 pounds away. Same with atheletes. They have to worry about weight and dieting just as much as a model. Because performance and appearance is everything in our society.

I think it's refreashing to hear the truth about how they get into shape for the show. I can't stand when they lie and say "oh I eat junk food all day" .. Give me a break you don't eat! which is exactly what she said. I think people need to know the extremes it takes to be that thin instead of thinking they are abnormal because they can't eat all day and have a six pack. Good for you Lima!

Actually met her once. She was nice. Very pretty in person, but her figure was not what I expected. Almost as tall as me, with very narrow shoulders and hips. The camera definitely adds on a few pounds.

These women do not eat most of the time – sure, they get extreme right before the show, but day to day life is pretty calorie free. If this is what you have to do for the job and to make all that cash, fine. The problem is when this unrealistic body image is upheld as the ideal body. It is unattainable for almost every woman out there. It is not normal to be this thin, yet girls who can't meet these expectations are considered overweight. It is really sad.

She has a good point, though, about being like an athlete. I wrestled for years and a big part of that is being exactly on weight, because even being .1lb over means you don't wrestle or you wrestle the weight class above you (the difference being about 10 lbs between classes).
We would do anything before a meet to be on weight. That also involved wearing layers of sweats and jogging in front of heaters to make sure we were on weight or under, and of course not eating or drinking.

It's not healthy, and she recognizes that, she also said she only does it before the big show, which I understand.

I agree. A lot of people do things for a specific time, but not part of their "normal" day-to-day lives. My 16 year old son also wrestles and has since he was 4 years old. He too has to stay on wieght during wrestling season. He has to watch what he eats and can't eat junk food or drink soda. The day of his wrestling tournamnts he has to "weigh in" so he doesn't eat much – maybe a banana for breakfast, a banana and peanut butter sandwich for lunch and only enough water to quench his thirst. After the weigh in, he can have a big meal. Again, he does this on the day he wrestles, but not every day. I completely understand and honestly, I don't know why it is such a big deal. She is an adult – 30 years old and a mother. She can eat whatever she wants. Sounds like she actually eats better than most models.

    So to sum up...

She recognizes that she represents and sells an unrealistic and potentially dangerous example of the feminine form, and does warn others to not even try to match what she herself does. She then compares herself to an athlete and then assumes to define "normal."

Someone needs to explain to that silly woman that she is NOT an athlete...athletes train and live for performance not aesthetics.
