Ahead of the curve: Weekly pop culture calendar

In his latest film, Leonardo DiCaprio is taking on a controversial man from history: John Edgar Hoover.

DiCaprio is certainly going all out for this role, even donning prosthetic makeup to look more like Hoover. But will his efforts reap box office - and, perhaps, Oscar - benefits?

Clint Eastwood’s “J. Edgar” will be coming to US theaters this Wednesday, November 9. Here’s what else you shouldn’t miss this week:

Sunday

  • Look out for new episodes of “The Simpsons” and “Family Guy” on Fox because there will be two very special guest stars. On “The Simpsons” at 8 p.m., Jane Lynch will voice Homer’s new assistant at work. On “Family Guy” at 9 p.m.,  Ryan Reynolds voices a character who becomes obsessed with Peter.

Monday

  • Melissa McCarthy is on “The Late Show with David Letterman” at 11:35 p.m. ET on CBS, while Taylor Lautner heads to “Jimmy Kimmel Live” at 12 a.m. ET on ABC.

Tuesday

  • New episodes of “Glee” and “New Girl” will be coming to Fox, and romance is in the air. Finn and Rachel are thinking about having their “first time,” and Jess starts to suspect that Nick wants to be more than friends. Watch these new episodes at 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. ET.
  • Books to look out for include “11/22/63” by Stephen King, which focuses on a time-traveling adventure to prevent the JFK assassination.
  •  Also look out for “The Change-Up” and part two of the sixth series of “Dr. Who” on DVD.
  • The soundtrack to “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn" will also be released today.

Wednesday

  • Jason Lee will make his first appearance as a recurring character on “Up All Night" tonight at 8 p.m. on NBC.
  • The "45th Annual CMA Awards” will be on live at 10 p.m. ET on ABC. This year’s hosts will once again be Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley.

Friday

  • “Jack and Jill,” in which Adam Sandler will play both the brother and the sister, will be coming to theaters, along with the critically acclaimed “Melancholia,” which has been generating Oscar buzz for its lead Kirsten Dunst.
  • There's also Tarsem Singh’s “Immortals,” starring Henry Cavill, Mickey Rourke and Freida Pinto, in theaters today.
  • The release of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2” on Blu-ray and DVD is finally here! "Potter" fans will not only see behind-the-scenes footage but also special interviews with J.K. Rowling on the Blu-ray version.

Saturday

  • On NBC's "Saturday Night Live" this week, Emma Stone will be hosting along with musical guest Coldplay.

Just saw the movie "50/50", after all the ranting great reviews. This movie is a dud. Maybe dvd-worthy at best. And who is paying Seth Rogan to co-star as the same drunk fratboy type unfunny obnixious moronic character...in so many movies? He is an awful actor and even worse comedian. -Art

Can't say I'm all that excited about this week ahead...I would rather do almost anything than watch Leo squint extra hard and speak with that accent for 2+ hours

He's a total Oscar chaser, I miss the good old days when he was on Growing Pains

  12. well I dont know

Average people sure get tired and disheartened sometimes though. Guess we are lucky to even have jobs now in this era where stockbrokers and corp execs run the world and profit is all that matters.

Admit it, as much of an insignificant tool as starrfire is you miss her. Don't give them any mention or credit... so they can go away.
