It'll be an episode that encompasses "lots of costume changes and special effects and a couple of real scares," according to actress Yvette Nicole Brown. "I thought last year with the zombies was the limit, but this year is even more fun and inventive."
Brown explained, "Britta needs to find out something about a particular study group member and she believes the best way to find it out is by having the gang tell spooky stories. The story each person tells says a lot about who they really are. They're enlightening on many levels!"
"We all worked very hard on it and there were moments where we each were like, 'Wait, what timeline is this? Am I hurt? Angry? Amused?' There was a lot to keep track of," she explained. "To work that hard and get the reward of folks loving it was wonderful icing on an already awesome cake!"
Brown also said that we'll learn a lot more about her character, Shirley, this season.
"Shirley will be figuring out who she is outside of being Andre's wife and her sons' mom. She will start to make plans for her future outside of being a homemaker," she said. "We'll also find out more about Shirley's past. And like last year's revelation (that she used to be a drunk!) some of it is shocking!"
"If God truly loves me, yes!" she said. "If we can lure him away [from his BET series, 'Reed Between the Lines'] for an episode or two, I sure would love that. Andre humanizes and grounds Shirley. And I think he's essential to her growth this season."
In the meantime, Brown said, there will be an upcoming "Community" episode pairing Shirley and Jeff, something we haven't seen since the first season. As the actress says, "It's not often I get to have Joel McHale all to myself."
