We can’t imagine a world without Jon Hamm strutting around on “Mad Men,” wooing viewers as mysterious ad man Don Draper. But according to Hamm, his plum part almost went to another actor.
“I started, literally, on the very, very bottom — I couldn’t have had less heat on me,” Hamm, 40, says of auditioning for the role of Don Draper as an unknown actor. "Nobody knew who I was… I wasn't on anybody's lists — and they had lists."
Hamm divulges that AMC’s top choice for the role was actually Thomas Jane.
Jon recalls the interesting way things turned out: "The funny thing was, I think they went to Thomas Jane for it, and they were told that Thomas Jane does not do television — now starring in ‘Hung,’ by the way."
While Hamm lives the good life on “Mad Men,” Jane, 42, plays down-and-out high school teacher-turned-prostitute Ray Drecker on the HBO series.
The actor also recently shared his own early career struggles, including a situation similar to that of his “Hung” character– Jane said in an interview that he wasn't opposed to "letting a guy buy [him] a sandwich" to make ends meet.
The fifth season of “Mad Men” returns in early 2012.
