This weekend, Alec Baldwin became the first person to host “Saturday Night Live” 16 times, according to NBC.
Baldwin made sure to mention his new record during his monologue opening Saturday’s show, notes New York Magazine. The "30 Rock" star kicked off “SNL”’s 37th season.
Hosting rival Steve Martin stopped by with Seth Rogen to make sure Alec broke the hosting record "without the use of steroids or performance enhancing drugs." (Not a particularly funny bit.)
Before Saturday, Martin and Baldwin were tied for most-frequent host; each had hosted 15 times.

also a good actor..however his big mouth ruins it...i agree with some of the others..."just shut up alec" and you'll be fine.
reminds me of a little of mel gibson..just tell alec to shut up
Hartman had left SNL for several years before he died.
Many point to the first five years as the best, but how many have actually watched those shows from start to finish? Thanks to them being released on DVD, we can and most of every show is simply grueling, boring and unfunny. Maybe one or two skits per show were good, and those are the ones on the highlight reels they bring out every five years.
The early eighties shows were horrible, save for occasional eddie murphy excellence and piscopo craziness. Remember, NYC in the eighties was a very different place as well. ONce LOvitz, Carvey, Nealon, Hartman, and D. Miller got there it got real good. It faded with the Cleghorn, Terry Sweeney featuring shows of 93-94 or so then has really been rock solid ever since.
I liked the steroids sketch. If anything it was dated, no unfunny. C'mon, Steve Martin drinking pee is always hilarious. Baldwin actually looks like he's lost weight, not gained (he got real damn fat, like elvis fat over the last 5 years). The number of times hosting thing has been a running joke since Tom Hanks hosted for the fifth time and they brought out the "5 timers" club. Goodman is right up there, but he's appeared more as a guest, esp when all the Linda Tripp stuff was going on. Now that he showed up on Community, I'm sure we will see him at some point this year.
I wish Meyers was in skits more again, his "zinger" sketches were always good. More Nasim Pedrad and her awesome boobs. Someone should make a list of SNL female they'd most like to bang. Tina Fey, Abby Elliott, and Nasim are my top three.
I used to watch all the time when Tina Fey & Amy Poehler did the news...it was always great and that is the only part of the show I would tune into....the skits with Justin Timberlake and Andy Samberg was another reason for watching :)

Other than whatever that TV "show" ism SNL is the only place that wants to give him work.
Of course- their track record is very spotty anyway.
They should rename it to:
Still Not Laughing.
A show that will keep you not laughing all night!
Maybe an occasional chuckle every other episode.
Saturday Night Live lost it's "edge" after Belushi died and the original Not Ready For Prime Time Players left to do movies and other stuff. It hasn't been the same since around 1980. Every few years or so they chuck out a decent show, but that is few and very far between.
I remember the days of SNL when the actors (ahem) actually learned their lines, instead of having to look at cue cards every five seconds – that kind of distracts from the skit.
he's not funny. just has the right friends promoting him. SNL isn't funny. the skit of the republican debates was lame. i wanted to laugh – just wasn't good writing and no fan of baldwin.
I'm a huge fan of Alec Baldwin... GO ALEC!!!!!
Thom Yorke broke records, not Alec Baldwin
Wasn't this guy handsome at one time. Alec has lost his mind, he has become such a joke. SNL is the correct vehicle for him.
CNN, how about Obama breaking a record as being the President who was going to bring "fiscal responsibility" to the Fed. gov't and make the lives of U.S. citizens BETTER – instead, we now have more people on Food Stamps and unemployed than ever before in our history – now that's a record. Does anyone see that news daily on CNN t.v. or on its website? When GW was the Pres, every single day there was a ding about him and articles about his failings. CNN fills its t.v. news and website with garbage to distract us all. They are not journalists anymore – they r just stenographers for the White House.
Radiohead was awesome!
Alec Baldwin.........I thought he moved out of the country when Bush got elected???????
What's up with Alec Baldwin's plastic surgery and why does he look more and more like Joan Rivers every year?
When Phil Hartman died, at that point the show sucked. It was not because he died, only coincidence in approximate era. Interesting that the same thing happened to NBA when Jordan retired.
They don't make em like they used to!
SNL should have left the air long, long ago. None of the actors have ever been as good as the ORIGINAL cast! Now, those were the days (or nights!). John Belishi, Jane Curtain, Dan Akroyd, Chevy Chase, Gilda Radner, Bill Murray-–who could ask for more??? (Only Tina Fey and Dana Carvey have been standouts since then!) Yes, I know--this is my personal opinion.
the original cast members are classic but come on, these guys are good too. Tina and her Palin impression was histerical and many many other great skits. Alec is hillarious in anything.
Alec is very good but Mr Timberlake is the funniest ever.
SNL has recruited and maintained the absolute most pathetic writing staff for years now. It has brought the show down to nothing more than pure tradition for the sake of its tenure. We stopped watching it after finding ourselves without even a moment of laughter throughout the entire episode. The writers are amusing themselves without the least ability to connect with viewers. Pathetic.
...now if they would only let Charlie Sheen host the show.
Baldwin's cannot act. Not one of them.
Shouldn't they have been checking for comedy-enhancing drugs? Like a bit of booze or a sniff of coke?
Baldwin played a funny Rick Perry trying to impress with his newly grasped Yankee slang. SNL's strength is still in political scenarios, and Baldwin is more up to date than Martin on such commentaries.
16 times. All of them unfunny. Congratulations, Alec! Say hi to your pig daughter for me.
i remember it welll...."your just a little pig" .... the daughter should have said shut up alec.
The guys a PETArd for crying out loud. You know supports terrorism and radical animal rights extremism.
Ummm Grandpa, what's SNL?
I didn't know they were having a contest.
It is 2011 u have to reserch to make sure u r not using material that has been used by some one else if not u get sued
y r u L-itr8?
Jay u admit u r like sheen?
I just stumbled on this post and wow if this show gets this much attention either positive or negitive well SNL wins!
How lame can SNL get?
You are lame just like Charlie Sheen.
Who cares. Baldwin is a sleaze.
I thought Saturday's show opener was great and to bring in Steve Martin was a wonderful homage to his hosting days as well.
Also loved the All My Children skit with 'Erica Kane' and all the soap opera cliches' ever done ! NBC did more for AMC than ABC did :-(
Who cares? Alec Baldwin - leftist loser. SNL - completely reprobate loser.
Hope Alec becomes the next mayor of NYC. Can't think of a town that deserves the likes of him more. Except maybe SF or Hollywood...or h e double toothpicks. Yeah, he would do a great job down there.
Baldwin for NYC Mayor? Yeah right the guys a radical animal rights nutjob.I quess couldnt be worse then the 2nd Amendment hating wackjob Micheal Bloomingfriggenidiot.
Hasn't New York suffered enough?
theres soo much coke going around at snl...!~
NO just got done u should try it charlie hosting that is:)
16 times? No wonder SNL has become so lame.
Not the same scince beluchi n akrode
I thought the record would be for most hot air expended on network television during a live show.
Not a funny episode, Alec is sure getting fat ugly and old, guess fugly is the way the youngsters say it these days
What is this live saturday u speak of?
"Alec Baldwin breaks SNL record"
- what – did he hit 105 on the suck-o-meter??
The show was funnier in the 70s because I was still smoking pot then.
You smoked pot when you were three?
Charlie buddy! How're you doing man?
So you keep your career in tact by hosting SNL a record number times. sad, so sad. What does that say about SNL? They keep recycling the same host. The record means nothing because he will just be hosting again in 4-6 weeks.
Hasn't been funny in 20 years. They do the show for themselves.. not their audience. If it had been a prime time show it would have been cancelled long ago.
I would like to know how many times John Goodman hosted, must be right up there about 12 or 13.
SNL's season opener was very funny, but the end with Alec and Steve Martin on stage not particularly surrounded by other cast members was kind of awkward. Who's on Top was great. The newbies that started (last year I think) are coming into their own and Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader-I-don;t-even-know-er are rocking it.
Alec Baldwin has played everything from a British intelligence agent in Red October to a conductor in "Thomas and the Magic Railroad."
Your worthress Arec Barwin
Saturdays show with Alec Baldwin was hilarious. I laughed all the way through. The band was terrible, can't remember the name. They sounded like they were having some kind of fits.
This guy is on Thirty Rock, and I don't think he is really that funny. One thing for sure though, he is a major ham. I think him breaking this record should tell us one thing, that he should not host the show any more.
Balls of Steel
Baldwin sucks as a PERSON!
You should hear the ugly things he says about you.
Takes one to know one?
SNL was pretty good last year and when I saw the opening skit I was optimistic. I love Alec and Steve. The first minute of their skit was funny, then it went into 11 year old boy territory and went downhill.
The best part of the show is still Seth Myers .. his jokes about Americans being confused by clothing terms such as "medium and small" had me LMAO. So true!!!!
it had its moments. most of the female players are terribly unfunny and it remains very white
I thought the Tony Bennett bit was pretty funny, I still think Justin Timberlake has had some of the best skits and hosting gigs over last decade though! They have gotten better overall after a long lull but the originals were stil the toughest to top... land shark anyone??
UNICEF. Flowers ma'am. Candygram.
Yeah, I miss Gilda Radner & John Belushi. The great days of SNL.
I guess he's doing the temp gigs until he can find something that matches his talents as an actor....Yeah he's better off with SNL....
Many of you all sound so angry that SNL doesn't live up to your standards. I might try to understand your view if NBC is the ONLY channel you get. You can change channels or even turn off the TV. Good luck with either of those.
Thank you! I too have been a fan since the beginning.... and I mean the very beginning. There must be something right going on at SNL for NBC to keep the show around for, what, 37 seasons? Even NBC head honcho Dick Ebersol kept the show on the line up after he failed at running it.
If i remember correctly George Carlin hosted the first show and it was just called Saturday Night in 75. Had something to do Howard Cosell but i don't remember the exact reason.
The show has sucked ever since Chevy Chase left.
Chevy left after the first year. Like most things, we tend to remember things that happened long ago as being totally awesome. I was the same way, and recently watched the first few seasons on video. There are some good skits, a lot of the fun is knowing here was John, Chevy, Gilda, etc. all young, etc. but there was also some very dog skits.
It is hard to do 90 minutes of live comedy every week and make everything funny. You swing and you miss sometimes, but you know what they call a baseball player who gets out 7 times out of every 10 times at bat?
They call him a multi millioniarie 300 hitter.
Plumber ma'am. I'm only a dolphin.
Yeh, what everyone else seems to consistently be missing is that SNL was hysterically funny all those years ago because the comedy they were doing then was ground breaking and edgy. 2011, no one is particularly edgy any more because it's all been done; you can't get any more crass, insulting, racially inappropriate or just plain bizarre than the comedians over the past 30 years, so no matter how fine the talent is on SNL their original mission to be ground breaking is over, completely. It doesn't mean they aren't funny any more, they just don't shock or even surprise much.
Good point, and also remember there were only 3 TV stations to choose from for most people back in the day. So, if you were home and awake, what were you watching at 1130pm? We're too plugged in nowadays........
SNL is so boring, can't even stand watching it for 2 minutes they got the most lame and stupid jokes. I hope they go away.
Poor Dylan- not every show has the wit of Tosh . O
Alec's attempts with makeup to look younger than he is ends up making him look just plain weird and scary. Just grow old naturally you nitwit.
I find the best thing to do with SNL for many years now is to DVR it, and zip past the commercials and bad skits. Usually get a decent 30 minutes of humor/laughs.
To me the show is like an old friend, often times stupid, sometimes funny, but always a reminder about the good old days. That is, if I had a friend, that is how i would imagine it would be.
Your name makes it sound as if a Jamaican gentleman recently pumped his love juice into your bottom. "Where were you last night?" the Jamaican gentleman's friend asked. "I was Indy Jim."
SNL has geared it's skits toward younger viewers courtesy of Andy Samberg and The Lonely Island for the past several years. If you're using words like "nitwit" it's probably a bit too immature for you anyway. But hey, on the bright side, with the wealth of channels at our disposal Matlock is BOUND to be on one of them!
If there is one constant of SNL, it's people complaining about how much better it was when THEIR set of favorite performers was on it, and how much it sucks today. I enjoyed the cast when I was young, but there will always be funny moments, examples are: Chris Farley as Matt Foley, Tina Fey making fun of Sarah Palin by quoting her verbatim.
I disagree with the whole "You just like this cast because they were what was on when you 1st started getting into the show." I haven't been watching the show with any consistentcy at all for the last maybe 6 yrs because of life changing events such as (finally) buying my first home and starting a brand new family at the ripe ol' age of 38. (42 now). But I've been watching the show time-shifted since doing so was even available as an option.... and I think we'd all agree that the biggest problem were those periods where the writing was just weak and lame. LIke the early-to-mid 80's caste before Hartman, Carvey, Meyers, etc. They would often have these great ideas and basis for a skit... but then it was like the skit just stopped before the real punch-line had a chance to be developed or delivered or even written. Then later-on, it's like sometimes they'd have a hit character, such as Carvey's church-lady for an example, and they'd only do a very limited number of skits making use of that character that all the audience seemed to just love and go nuts about! I'm in no way saying run the character into the ground.... I hate when that happens... but many of the clever and universally funny characters they've managed to come-up with over the years have gotten cut-off just a little too-soon in my opinion. I know they are no-doubt doing this in an effort to "keep it fresh", but it just often felt like they stopped with the actually funny and well written characters much too soon, only to focus on hurriedly coming-up with something else just for the sake of new, even if it sucked in comparison.
On a side note though, a very interesting thing I've noted in talking to people is that most people tend to think the actor who portrayed the "007 James Bond" character when THEY first saw a Bond film in the movies is the best one. Go figure.
This is the same reason why things such as all-time greatest or best whoever are invalid. Whoever draws up the list, whether an individual or, worse, via public poll, are limited to their experience of the field. How can one have a true appreciation of someone whose prime has passed?
Who sucks more? Baldwin or SNL? That's a hard one
That's a trick question. The answer to it is your wife.
I don't plan to read the article.
Best comment, ever.
Baldwin is a media hack and a liberal stooge. Why they keep asking this tool to keep hosting is beyond me.
I have a feeling that a lot of things are beyond you.
Yeah, you repubs really have the market cornered when it comes to funny. Please, tell us who you like?
I turned it off after wasting 30 minutes of my life. The episode was not funny, he was not funny, the monologue stunk. Not a fan, but the only funny episodes lately are hosted by Justin Timberlake.
That was a good one! I agree!
Enough already....he isn't that funny, give some young actors a chance....instead of that liberal blowhard
Yes – liberals aren't nearly as funny as conservatives – especially the ones in Congress.
Thank you theAntiELVIS. However, I think scary is a much better adjective for the Republicans in congress.
LOL rick perrytwit ... slack jawed bible thumper.
SNL hasn't been funny in years (in my opioion); however Saturday night it has its good moments (maybe I just like Alec Baldiwin). But please bring back the "good old days."
This episode sucked. My wife and I had a couple of friends over and we ended up watching the SNL premier since we're all SNL fans. Anyway when the episode finally ended we all kind of looked at each of and said "that sucked". Alec is usually a good host but he messed up several times and even the skits that did have a few laughs went on far to long. Hopefully next week is better.
Pete Schwedty ladies and gentlemen!
Dude you must not have watched the show.
I have been watching since Chevy, Dan and Jim, and this was one of the 10 funnist shows. The writing this season has drastically improved. Alec was right on target and with the exception of the drug test sceen mentioned above. It was excellet.
I think you meant John (Belushi)?
Yep, I've been watching since Larry, Jose, and the Duck.
couldn't agree more. I have watched since the beginning, through all the ups and downs ( Dick Ebersol days). People need to understand a couple things about this show- it will evolve, it will be bad sometimes and sketches may not all be great, but the one constant is Lorne Michaels. For 90 minutes, including a news segment, writers must present relevant material. This show is a icon whether anyone likes it or not. It has produced more talent in Hollywood than any soap opera! I was lucky enough to be selected for a live show in 2005. It was amazing- SNL is a machine! I will watch till the sad day it goes off the air. Melissa McCarthy is hosting this weekend- do yourselves a favor and watch or DVR it!
Jim Belushi was also on SNL but in the eighties. So, not entirely wrong.
Way to go F.A.G. (Film Actors Guild). You really made a difference, didn't you F.A.G.?
When see you Arec Barrwin, you see the true ugriness of human nature.
Ollie..you idiot. Just keep watching Two and a Half Men.
I haven't watch SNL for years but I turned it on and saw Alec Baldwin and wound up watching the entire show. His Al Pacino impression was dead on!!!!!
Wait, Saturday Night Live is still on?
I guess I'm too busy actually "living" on Saturday nights to watch a crappy TV show.
I mean what's the point of watching a comedy that isn't funny?
You are asleep at 9, most likely, dreaming of the witty postings that you will make to-morrow.
Baldwin was hysterical. His Tony Bennet impersonation on Weekend Update killed. I haven't laughed that hard since Roseanne Roseannadanna.
Wow, you don't watch it, yet somehow know how funny it is, or isn't.
What a moron. You're just upset because you're still living in mommy's basement and she won't let you stay up that late.
"Tony Bennett" was good – I especially liked how he kept the perma-smile – but the reference may have been a little old for SNL. I'm almost 30, and while I definitely know who Tony Bennett is and had him on my wedding playlist, they could've chosen a more timely impression.
Have you ever heard of DVR? Dope.
@Sara: A more timely reference? Um .. HELLO? Tony Bennett just released his "Duets" album on Sept 20th with Lady Gaga, Carrie Underwood, John Mayer, Mariah Carey, Faith Hill, etc and it's skyrocketed to the top of the charts. Wow, ironic that you talk about getting a more "timely" reference yet you have no idea what's current.
I have a VCR that I can sell you. It's the newest thing in time-shifting programs.
Why would you waste such precious time commenting on something that is clearly of no interest to you?
I guess you touched a sensitive chord with a bunch of loser Saturday Night TV watchers. I've never seen so many irritated people since I was the guest speaker at a hemorroids convention.
You'd think people who purport to be fans of an alleged comedy show would have a better sense of humor.
Wait! Maybe that's the problem.
It hasn't been the same since Will Ferrell.
Correction: It hasn't been the same since John Belushi.
You said it, Todd!
Todd, you hit the nail on the head.
the old day were great, But I also loved the early nineties. with Hartman, Meyers and Carvey and then a little latter, Saddler and farley. Those guys were hysterical!!
You old farts and your tales of ancient comedians. It's not like you had too many alternatives back then. SNL was something edgy and new...kind of like the invention of the television, or the automobile. So hard to please you guys these days.
the early 90's were the best. But maybe thats because I grew up during that time enjoying those comdeians. it is true that now the show has some pretty shameful writing, and it almost seems to be reasching for jokes. but occaisionally you do get that laugh or two. Overall downhill, but still has some good points.
So easy to please guys like JT these days... just make a fart sound and he'll laugh uncontrollably. Yup, at 27 years old, I'm an old fart, but at least the humor was sophisticated before the late 90s. Of course, someone who is too young to know what the 90s were like, just wouldn't know any better.
JT - Yeah, us old farts just had Carlin and Bruce and Pryor. You know, the non-edgy guys of ancient times ...
Isnt he maybe gay?
What is your point? He isn't gay but if he were what are you saying exactly?
How can you be "maybe gay"? That's kind of like being "maybe stupid".
Aren't you definitely stupid?
Not even close. Nice try at being controversial for no reason though. Troll.
Maybe he's thinking of the episode with Adam Sandler in canteen boy. Another funny skit.
chantal is obviously talking "gay" in the pre-generation whatever sense – meaning jolly, merry and cheery (otherwise chantal would be a bigot, and no one should jump to such a conclusion).
Yes, chantal, Baldwin and the rest of SNL's merry cast is indeed gay.
Flowers. Plumber ma'am. UNICEF.
His only talent is being a liberal shriek that Hollywood loves because he doesn't mind making a fool of himself. Additionally, he fits the show being a Stupid Narcissistic Liberal.
'Bart – His only talent is being a liberal shriek that Hollywood loves because he doesn't mind making a fool of himself. Additionally, he fits the show being a Stupid Narcissistic Liberal."
ah sod it, I cant bothered to answer properly, Im just going to call you out as a dick.
Hopefully he tries to sell Scheawty balls
He can now eat his own Schweddy" balls in ice cream .
I can't wait to have a pair of Schweddy balls in MY mouth!
There is so much talent that goes through the SNL studio, yet they haven't been consistently funny in years. It's really a shame.
Thank You, oh universal arbitrar on everything "consistently funny"
Bring back Mr. Bill – for those of you old enough to remember!
The show was awful from the start with Steve Martin, who use to be funny. First skit with him and Baldwin was disgusting.
Good time to channel surf for a much television. Done with SNL. The originals are in the past and the show has gross humor. Sorry SNL. Time to say farewell.
Sad, but true. Every once on a while I'll give it a go if it looks particularly promising with a great guest host, and the writing just isn't there. However the performing enhancing drugs sounded funny, had to Steve's or Seth's. No wonder they didn't find it funny. Because it was.
Casual Observer.......now we are aging ourselves. lol I did like it way back when with Gilda Radner, Jane Curtain, John Belushi, Eddie Murphey etc were on. Hot tub,,,,,oooh dat's hot. lmao!
How pround he should be! Just as proud as Brad Pitt, who went from starring with Anthony Hopkins, to co-starring with a Jonah Hill? Some achieivement? Maybe he can get on with that Sat. Night Crap!
@Dee....it was 'gross humor' back then, too (The 'Bass-o-matic'? Mainway's "Bag of Glass"?); we were of the age to enjoy it, that's the difference. I haven't found it funny in years, either....but I'm also years older.
I was on before, pretty boring. Is the first commenter really the universal arrestor?
SNL didn't become less funny, you just lost your sense of humor as you got old. Get off my lawn, you darn kids!
What I want to know is when the devil is this great actor gonna make more movies.....
Beatrix Kiddo should do stand up. That comment about getting off the lawn was a real knee slapper.
I agree...consistently non-funny. Everything is dumbed down, sterilized, santized, and generic.
I also have no sense of humor so thats probably why i dont find anything funny anymore. my life sucks...
One name.. Chris Farley.. G.R.H.S. All time great.
