'All My Children' leaves ABC with a bang

[Editor's Note: If you haven't watched the last on air episode of "All My Children," steer clear of this post.]

ABC's "All My Children" stayed true to its soapy roots all the way up to its last on-air minute. Fans of the long-running series had this day marked on calendars since ABC announced they were giving the soap the boot in favor of a new food and lifestyle talk show, "The Chew," earlier this year.

Before the final on-air hour began, fan favorite cast member Susan Lucci, series creator Agnes Nixon and executive producer Julie Hanan Carruthers all stopped by "The View" for a special hour-long send-off.

After thanking the ladies of "The View" for the tribute episode, Lucci remarked that it was a "celebration of a wonderful show. This is the building where we shot 'All My Children' most of those 41 years. It’s an emotional time, a very happy time, [we have] so much to be grateful for."

Cameron Mathison, a.k.a. Ryan Lavery to "AMC" fans, is one of the cast members who is moving with the show to the Web, thanks to production company Prospect Park. "'All My Children' is literally part of my heart, which is why I was so quick to sign up for online," Mathison said on "The View."

It's been reported that Lucci has declined an offer to go on with the show...and perhaps that's why today's episode ended the way it did. As the minutes ticked by to the end of the program on Friday, viewers saw J.R. fire a gun into a party at the Chandlers' place. Of course, we don't know what happened, because what's a soap opera without a dramatic cliffhanger?

As viewer and Twitter user @itsADELEee describes it, "All My Children ends with a bang. literally. i love how all the goodbye montages were like in the previous eps this week. and then boom!"

Wrote @PunditOnPoint, "All My Children has aired its last network episode. Despite the cliches, I enjoyed it. AMC is headed for the internet. End of an era."

Not all fans were happy with the way things ended, though.

"Really?" inquired user @mnfairman. "That All My Children ending was disappointing." Another fan concurred, albeit more strongly: "IS THIS HOW "ALL MY CHILDREN" REALLY GONNA END IT?? I AM BEYOND PISSED! *Throws TV out the window.*"

Did you catch the end of "AMC"? If so, what did you think? Will you be watching it online?

WELL I AM VERY UPSET OVER THE FACT THAT THIS CHEW CRAP WHICH IS NOT INTERESTING AT ALL, TO ME IT IS BORING. ALL MY CHILDREN WAS LIKE FAMILY TO ME. I LOVED THAT SHOW, AND FOR IT TO HAVE BEEN CANCELLED WAS A BIG MISTAKE. BECAUSE I WILL NEVER WATCH ABC AGAIN, AND I KNOW OTHER PEOPLE AGREE. WHEN IM DEPRESSED THAT SHOW PERKED ME UP,THAT SHOW AND ONE LIFE TO LIVE WAS MY ONLY THING I LOVED TO WATCH ON ABC THE MOST. YOU PEOPLE REALLY HURT THE FANS ALOT WHEN YOU DID THAT, I WOULD TAKE THE CHEW CRAP OFF, AND PUT OUR SOAPS BACK ON WHERE THEY SHOULD BE. THE CHEW IS BORING I HATE IT WITH A PASSION. SERIOUSLY PLEASE PUT OUR SOAPS BACK ON MAKE THE ABC VIEWERS HAPPY AGAIN. AND TAKE THAT BORING CHEW BACK OFF OR PUT IT ON ANOTHER CHANNEL. THATS MY OPINION

I started watching AMC around the Bianca rape storyline. I lost a good five years because of military service. Anyone who was a fan watched for a reason, when I found out the show was being canceled I looked to see how these storylines would rap up. The last week went well to me right up until the last episode. I have never been a fan of the cliffhangers, but I am looking forward to the web version. All My Children has been around with some people for a lifetime and the only thing that really gets to me is that it was cut because its more costly to produce than some talk show, some things just cant be replaced.

Erica's Scarlett O'Hara ending...I liked. The gunshot...I didn't. The rest was fine and I could've lived with Erica's story ending that way. Then you're left to your own assumptions and a discussion for years. The gunshot was a ploy to get people watching online. I won't have to. Someone will spoil the outcome the next day or moments later and it won't be a big deal.

I've watched AMC off and on since it debuted in 1970. I'm sorry to see it go, but I won't follow it to the internet. Hopefully a cable channel will pick it up and we'll have another chance to see more of Pine Valley and its residents. I thought the "Who did JR shoot?" ending was cute, but I can understand why viewers more dedicated than myself would find it anticlimactic.

Back in the 1970s all us girls in school, soap operas were all the thing (there was no other channel except ABC). Then we grew up, had careers, raised a family. The soaps are so immorally filthy today I wish they'd ALL go off the air. Even at the age of 49, I'd rather watch pre-K shows on PBS to them.

Glad it was cancelled, the show was crap for quite a while. The lesbian story was disgraceful. This show loved to take straight people and turn them gay but never the other way around, I got tired of that and the fact that they were constantly taking kids from their parents and giving them to idiots.

Well, I have been watching since it started in 1970, just a kid. My friend and I would make lunch for her mom, who would walk home for lunch from work. We'd all eat and watch – it was half an hour then. I had much higher hopes for a final hour full of clips and memories, since it's all about the nostalgia for me. I am worried about some of the writers of comments on this board. Really bad grammar and spelling. Wow. Please use this time of no AMC to educate yourself. I swear it's the best use of your time now. P.S. Long live Donna, Chuck and Billy Clyde.

I sure would have liked a final long credits, for everyone for all the years, sort of like they did at times on the Christmas show. Not being a Chirstmas person, and working the holidays, I both enjoyed and felt pathetic that my Christmas was AMC!
I agree that a pan back showing everyone still living their lives in PV after a good montage of the past would have been a much classier ending.

I'm okay with the cliffhanger ending, as it gives viewers something to look forward to when the show debuts online in January. What I did NOT like was that the cast and crew were denied a full-length end credit roll. Instead the credits were shown as a crawl below ... you guessed it ... an ad for the frikken Chew. What a way to disrespect cast, crew, and fans alike after 41 years.

I used to watch AMC in the 70's and early 80's. I did watch the last episode and in some ways it was like ".. I missed nothing these 30 so years". The on-line version will never work, the demographics dont support it but if I was a fan I would push to have new episodes air on the Soap Opera Channel. And while the highly paid Susan Lucci types may not return having it on cable can make it more racier!

So sad to see it end, but it was fabulous- how else do you end a series about such a strong character!? She started the 41 yr drama putting on make-up refusing to study, spent the following years being and getting everything, she left by chasing her dreams to her death. Classic soap. and of course there is the open ending that she can come back a zombie in a prime time movie. Does anyone really expect anything less?

What the heck was that! HORRIBLE! If you are ending a show supposedly for good.. WHY would you leave it on a cliff hanger??? I think the ending showed a rush to end the show. Forgive me but the Gone with the Wind hint at the end was horrible and really out of character for Erica Kane and Jack. Almost like some other writer wrote the ending. I think it would have been better if babe was brought back too and all would have fallen into place and Pine Valley would have died in peace...or...what a minute...is David bring it back to life too? Ending did not give the show justice. Personally the writers shot themselves in the foot on this one.

Terrible ending to a "once" superior show. It wasn't a surprise that Erica thought only of what she wanted and was offended when Jack said "Sayonara". Never once over the years, has Erica thought of someone else other than herself. For once in her life, why couldn't she have just given in. She declared her undying love for him but at the end, the love of herself was stronger than for Jack. As for the big "bang", I guess we'll see a recap when this show hits YouTube early next year. I think JR was trying to shoot Melissa but got either Erica or his dad by mistake. Whether they were seriously hit or not, I really don't care as I wont' be watching the show any longer when it returns.

I took the day off from work today to watch the final episode of All My Children. I have been watching for 35 years. To the delight of loyal fans, it looked like the families would come together to celebrate Stewart's return. Adam proposes to Brooke and she says "yes." Adam gets his home back (a gift from Brooke). Angie can see, Tad & Dixie are together. Everyone is happy except for the troubled J.R. and Jackson Montgomery. There is also the question of who is the final person that David brought back to life. We want it to be Babe, but David won't tell a pleading Dixie. Jack refuses to follow Erica to Hollywood–her dream since she was a little girl. After 24 years, Jack is following after her no more. As Erica rushes after Jack to win him back, J.R. fires his gun. He is aiming at his father, Adam, just as Erica runs in front of Adam. We are left asking who did J.R. shoot–himself, Erica...? The final scene was very disappointing!! Erica deserved her happy ending. I sure hope One Life to Live ends much better!! The View did a great job today in their tribute to All My Children. Thank you Agnes Nixon!!

I enjoy DVR my shows and watching them when I come home from work.. I loved these last few weeks. I thought the writing was better than usual. I loved the last show, especially Jack doing the "frankly, I don't give a damn" piece. I will definately watch when the show is streamed on the internet. Keep it centered around David's antics, it keeps it more interesting. I felt a distinct lack of chemistry between Zach and his wife despite the lovey dovey script. Maybe a move to the younger members would revive the show's energy, Madison and Scott, and the young Hubbards. Anyway, yes, I'll still watch.

It's been nice seeing the dead brought back as silly as that is.... and I loved seeing clips from past episodes and people who have come and gone and past away through the years.. It is sad that All My Children was cancelled and I am not happy with that at all nor with them cancelling One Life To live. Who wants to watch ANOTHER food show thats taking its place?... we have the food network channel for that. I think it was a dumb move to take these soaps off during the day. I wonder if they expect every loyal fan that was watching amc to watch the chew instead? I know I won't! If the ratings were low with amc they will be much lower when the Chew takes it s place. Well I must have missed the BiG BANG, I kept watching Jr. point the gun, but never saw he fire the gun. I will admit I haven't been watching AMC because of all the new characters they kept bringing in. I watched mainly to see the old cast members. I was sorry I watched it. Although I did get to see some of the old cast members, I certainly didn't care of Erica's part. I think it stunk! Especially the way it ended. I thought the ending part was stolen from Gone With The Wind, if you can remember the way that ended in the movie. Like they were trying to imitate it. GWTW, not very original if you ask me. Sorry I watched. Another thing I was hoping they could have a just a flashback of Kate and Palmer. Sure was a waste of time.

I thought the ending was cool. I was kinda expecting that journey song to start playing any second. The same one that played in the sopranos finale ending "dont stop beliving" .thats what the ending reminded me of.simalar endings.also if erica comes back alive i definitaly see kit and erica having a love affair. I saw flirting between them. Also i will be tuning in to see jacob young on his return to bold and the beautiful sept 26 since watching him on amc he now is my fave soap actor .i hope he plays a bad guy on there too.i also enjoyed david hayward character he sure is hot and an awesome actor.

My first reaction was – really? But then as I thought about it, how else should a soap end? Shouldn't it end the way it went on for all those years...melodramatic cliff hangers. It was good enough for the Sopranos to leave unanswered questions. Plus the days leading up to the finale did provide closure on many stories/relationships for those who wanted that and won't follow the show online.

Reality TV killed soaps – why pay actors high salaries, sets, costumes, writers, etc. when there are any number of "housewives" of wherever or Jersey shore trash that will parade their own melodrama on TV for far less in the hopes of endorsements and other "personal brand" opportunities.

I will miss AMC despite having grown weary of some of the story telling in the past few years. The View focusing back on the 80's stories of jenny and Greg and Angie and Jessie reminded me of when AMC was great – or maybe just took me back to my own glory days which felt good. Good luck to all that were part of AMC at the end – I might try and catch it online.

I've watched AMC off and on since Jenny and Jesse hung out on the fire escape in Hells Kitchen. The show had gotten so hard to watch that when they announced it was ending I thought of it as euthanasia, but they rallied a bit in the last months. And then they did this. What a cheap shot (pun intended). I sort of get the Gone with the Wind parallel, as Susan Lucci was certainly a modern day Scarlett, but the crazed J.R. subplot and unknown reanimated female? Dumb. It totally spoiled what should have been a warmly nostalgic ending. I would have been far happier if they could have just pulled back the camera from a Pine Valley gathering and left everyone happily pursuing their lives. This ending makes me less likely to watch it online, and somehow I don't think that was their goal.

It was disjointed and the acting forced–but how much can you fully flesh out in 40 minutes of screen time? But the big bang ending was a strategic masterpiece. We won't know "Who was shot by JR" until the web episodes, and the producers can put off deciding on the victim until one of the actors does not agree to do the web episodes (Susan Lucci probably). A whole other story arc is stll open in that Babe could still be alive ("B" on the bracelet, other undead person not named), but Dr. David suggests the other person is someone viewers would not want alived. Brilliant way to glue us to the web and open up other story lines.

one could argue that Shakespeare invented the concept of the soap opera. his plays are rife with love triangles, dysfunctional families, apparitions, unrequited love, cross dressing, crazy characters, monologues, plot twists, tragedy, statistically impossible coincidences... these are the timeless themes that will live on. hoping that artistic truth trumps this fad of reality tv.

Of course, Shakespeare wrote dramas that were so good, had such insight into human condition that they are still being produced and discussed today. This show, like all soap opera, will not be viewed or placed in any such esteem by future generations, and rightly so. It is trash.

Dallas, Sopranos, Gone with the Wind – all were parodied in this ending. I prefer this over some sappy farewell.
It was great to see so many members of the cast return during the final week including Adam/ Stuart, Brooke, Jamie, Babe, Joe, Ruth and so on.
Just sorry that Palmer and Phoebe were not featured in the final week. Those two were definitely among the best characters during the AMC run. They dominated decades of AMC.
It was clear that Agnes Nixon was in control the final run-up to today. The characters regained what made them beloved including Erica's egoism and Adam's unsympathetic father routine.
What is clear is the collosal idiocy of Charles Pratt and other writers who could not cross a t on an Agnes Nixon script. they had no understanding of the genre, the characters, or the audience. It was good to have the final scripts handled by the mistress of soap operas herself, Agnes Nixon. Some people are irreplaceable.

I LOVED IT! I especially liked the Gone With the Wind/Dallas-esque ending. It's a Soap, for heaven's sake. A bunch of good stories to the end. KUDOS TO EACH AND EVERY ACTOR AND WRITER, AND TO AGNES.

Having watched it from day one, except when working, I will miss this show terribly. It forced me to have a cup of tea at one pm everyday. I loved the actors, stories, fashions, home staging and most of all the social issues we sometimes forget to think about. I once met Susan L. at Saks 5th downstairs in Garden City while we were both buying baby clothes. She was a class act.

I agree very much with you. I have watched AMC since it started, sometimes not exactly liking every actor/actress but I ALWAYS enjoyed the time of day it played. Just the right time to take a break, have lunch and relax.
The stories were not always believable–but it was fiction, WHAT DO THESE COMPLAINERS WANT?? If you read a Novel, do you expect it always to true to life??
I will miss the cast and the enjoyable hour. Thank you to all the people involved that worked hard to entertain us.

  132. Well at least....

Susan got her daytime emmy a few years back. It would have been completely sad had she not and this thing ended.
Of course they had to leave you hanging in some regard, what else would there be to come back to when it appears online? And at least it wasn't all just a dream like the Dallas season opener back in the day.....

I just don't understand how yet another food show is going to impress daytime viewers. The Chew should be on the Food Network or Cooking channel and not on regular network stations. One of the promo's I saw for The Chew has Chef Symon saying to put pastrami on your burger instead of bacon. Isn't this country fat enough?

Soaps have been around a lot longer than the 70's & 80's. They started back on radio, I believe in the 40's...maybe 50's. I can remember my mom watching As the World Turns on tv in the late 50's....the soaps were only 15 minutes long at that time! It would be interesting to have them go full circle back to radio...and have a soap radio channel on XM. Then you really use your imagineation!

Well I wish the viewers of As the World Turns and Guiding Light were given a choice to watch online.... So many people watched these shows, myself included..... In protest... I have not watched even one day of daytime T.V. since the last episodes aired.... There is nothing to watch... It's all garbage... Now AMC is also getting the axe... It's pitiful... Taking off good programming and replacing it with garbage like The Chew???? Spare me... These producers and networks made GRAVE mistakes.... See what the turnover of these bogus shows will be.....Flash in the pans....Should have stuck with what worked...

Yeah I quit watching after ATWT went off the air last September until the last couple of months of All My Children. I refuse to watch Let's Make a Deal and The Talk. Definitely won't be watching The Chew (thought that sounded like a stupid name the first time I heard about it and it still does) either.

I agree so much with your comment.. I never watched soaps but when pregnant with my first daughter who will be 40 this year... I was introduced to the begining of AMC with its introduction.. have watched it all these years. This show became my escape to everyday life and knowing I could sit for one hour and know I was connected to what felt like an extension of my family... well now it is like there was some one moved in next door blocking me from visiting with family two doors down.. and like it is going to be ok to view them online like skype or something so I will be missing so much more... sorry.. guess there are somethings in my life I am not prepared to change and this is one... I agree life goes on and things need to change.. however, as my dad and his father would say.. if it aint broke do not fix it... well as you said.. can not do much when we are but one person.. but wanted to let you know you are not alone.. I think like you do... and hope I can find a way to watch afternoon tv again.. cause as of right now like you I have stopped watching the two other shows I watched so as not to be further disappointed... Thank you for voicing your opinion so I do not feel alone in my thoughts...

VERY UNHAPPY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Unhappy ABC dumped AMC for another talk show with nobodies. Unhappy that it is the end of the era. They cancelled it because of declining ratings, and now think fans will wait for 4 MONTHS to see if/when and how this all works out for an "online version

It doesn't matter whether the new show lasts 5 years or 5 weeks, ABC will never replace it with another soap. They cost too much and fewer and fewer people watch them. I suspect in another 5 years there won't be any soaps on afternoon network tv.

I will truly miss this program. I have watched it off and on for years. Thank god for the DVR; once I could record it and watch at my leisure I was instantly hooked back on Pine valley. I recorded it and LOVED IT. I too was disappointed in the ending. An internet version just won't be the same because I'm sure there are a number of actors that won't be interested, it seems like a step down from TV and I would imagine most would want to move up.

What's more entertaining is the fact that ABC thinks they can put some stupid show on The Chew, seriously the name makes me want to puke, their stupid little play on "The View" which I also hate. I hope faithful All My Children Viewers will REFUSE to watch the stupid replacement and show ABC what a huge mistake they made. Wouldn't it be great for the Chew to FLOP and ABC bring AMC back – woo hoo, I can still dream.

So who was the other person Dr. David Hayward saved ? That was not fair the show did not tell us......

Another network is CRAZY not to pick up All My Children. Facebook had WELL over 400,000 loyal fans and those are JUST the people who even knew about the site on Facebook, go online, etc. Can you imagine the loyal fans out there....bet well over a million.

Also to leave us with such a cliffhanger...makes one only think someone has something up their sleeve. Can there be a real Erica Kane movie in the works and not just on All My Children, as planned with Kip Sterling and Erica Kane herself ???

      An interesting thought.

LOL, speak for yourself, cause WE (those of us who think the Carey's were among the worst things to happen to AMC in its 41 years) do NOT want Babe back. Dropping a house (ok, the Comback) on that witch was the ONLY thing Pratt did right during his time on AMC. :)

But the ending was such a fail. Especially since Jacob Young won't even be part of the web series. So they are gonna need a new JR and if there's a new JR, what's the point of bringing back Babe...especially if she's a recast too? The chemistry between Jacob Young and Alexa Havins was the ONLY thing that sold that couple.

I was hoping that the guy (Junior?) sneaking around would have blown up the mansion where they were having the party. The web edition could have started with the survivors of the blast.
      How about a huge earthquake?
      Nuclear explosion?
Zombie attack–with Dr. Hayward's resurrected characters attacking the "living" characters?
Just something providing the TV audience with an ending would have sufficed.
Even having Susan Lucci and Regis Philbin as the couple who "imagined" the series. They could have woke up together Newhart style.
Did the show somehow end Thursday, not Friday?
They better not end "One Life To Live" in a similar fashion!
TV still is more prevalent than good internet connections. I won't be watching either show on the internet anytime soon because my community doesn't offer a connection speedy enough for video watching. Have a little loyalty to the TV viewers who won't be able to continue following these shows.

I stopped watching AMC a long time ago but because I enjoyed it for so many years before I watched the last episode. I thought it had a good ending. Erica has always been compared to Scarlett O'Hara so it was Ok with me. As for the final seconds, the show had already showed back clips, had speeches made at the party so it was more than appropriate to end on a bang...literally. After all life goes on and to wonder what happens next is what the soap opera world is all about and so ended great. And to be honest who really cares to know? Everything usually is anti-climatic anyway. Good Job "AMC".

Nobody works harder than soap opera actors. For those who do not go online, I would hope that they do some other shows or movies, because given the time that other actors have to look at a script, they are stellar. They work so hard, but most of the time the script is cliche after cliche. The script isn't so much a cliffhanger, but a tribute to the actors who put in so much hard work for?

No I want be watching it on line nor will I be watching anything on ABC. Die hard fans had watched the show since the beginning and this is how we are paid back by "The Chew" really, you got to be kidding me. When is ABC going to take the rest of the soaps off. I have stopped watching them already, never know when they will disappear too. Might as well get used to it. I can't believe ratings would have been low enough to remove this show. I know I am only one person but ABC lost a loyal fan. Goes to show that loyality means absolutely nothing.
